I think that there is some important context missing in this video. The media had this narrative about the rivalry between Drexler and MJ, how they were both athletic guards, both in their prime, etc. And mind you, this was not a 6-time champion MJ yet, and people were making all these comparisons, he wasn't the GOAT yet.
And something that they said regarding MJ and Drexler was that MJ wasn’t shooting well from 3s and that Drexler was better than MJ - at least in that category. So the 6x 3s were not just 6x 3s, MJ was certainly aware of the narratives and comparisons and being as maniacally competitive as one MJ can be, this was also a statement from MJ. Not only Drexler is not on his level, but he can hit those 3s if he wants to do so, it wasn’t part of his game and he was indeed pretty efficient in mid-range and driving to the basket.
Compared to today’s game, it was a different game, for sure. It's hard to compare eras, but it would be naive to think that in today's game MJ wouldn't have worked in his 3s, but you wouldn't let him open or doubt his clutchness. McHale even said that back then, Bird didn't even practice 3s.
The first thing people said about him when he entered the league? That he couldn't shoot and he turned that into one of his strengths. People need to understand that MJ would do whatever he would need to in order to win, he would adapt and learn in any era. He has always worked on his weaknesses until they become a strength, much more so than any other athlete.
Right on. MJ took whatever he needed as motivation to one-up his opponents.
He would further cement his dominance over Drexler that summer at an Olympic team practice. The practice was very early in the morning, and Drexler, who didn't want to turn on the lights to wake his family at the hotel, accidentally took two left shoes. Instead of owning up to his mistake and getting a right shoe, he ended up practicing wearing two left shoes. The rest of the team found about it and ribbed him for it. But MJ in particular took that event to mean that Clyde wasn't confident in owning up to and admitting his mistakes.
Here's a good account of the incident and Jordan's psychology:
ftw.usatoday.com/2018/06/nba-michael-jordan-shrug-game-trail-blazers-clyde-drexler-story
exactly, they asked drexler if he was better than jordan in any way and he said probably 3 point shooting. it was a prompted answer and hardly a dig at MJ but he still took it as motivation and i think that's what really prompted this moment from a media perspective at least.
Especially in an era where you'll get KILLED by fans and analytics because you're a guard and can't shoot 3s.
Most people don't realize that back then shooting 3's was seen as more of a gimmick. So they probably didn't practice from there to often and would get benched if they took one of the dribble or very deep like Curry. This next generation of ballers will probably be snipers from 3 with decent finishing ability around the rim but lack a mid range/post game.
Have you heard Bobby Hansen's account of his discussion with MJ prior to the game? Bobby was from the Western Conference and told him "the book on you is that you can't shoot 3s" just before the game.
This is the content you used to make more of that made me fall for your account. If you feel inclined, please do more retro breakdowns of all time great players and all time great games. No one narrates the game with knowhow and charisma like you, coach!
100% put me in coach
@Prod. by Nels I saw you commenting F in today’s NBA throwback replay.
@@joeyportia6476 lmao that was legit my phone cause the screens fucked ya feel me
Nah, I notice he uses different remarks on the exact same plays/shots. When the shot goes in, he says wide open good shot. But when the shot is off, he says a forced shot; on really similar shot/defense/play. He basically doesn't know what's good or bad, unless he already knows the outcome of the play. He's really inconsistent.
@@saechak206 alright, Gary. Lol.
This is where Michael said to the media when they compared his and Clyde's 3pt shooting, stating that Clyde had better 3pt numbers simply because he "chose" not to shoot as many 3s. That was made clear to the world after this game.
Clyde Drexler was shooting more 3s and making them at a much higher percentage than Jordan in 92.
on top of that, go look at MJ's assists vs. the lakers finals and compare that to magic johnson's assists. MJ is better than everybody when need be, lmao.
next up, look at MJ's assists in his other 5 finals series... you'll learn he no longer gave a shit about that stat and remained about 6 on average. yet with the lakers, he put up 1 short of tying magic's average of 12 assists that finals. hell, coach phil put him at point guard and averaged a triple double and didnt like it lol
@@rebelranger That's kind of the point. The more 3s you shoot, for any player, Bird, Jordan, etc, the better the rhythm, the higher the percentage. Also less percentages of your 3s taken are bailout 3s.
RedLightning17 Stop it. He was just hit from 3. Y’all sounds like LeBron fans
@@inlovewithi Not necessarily. Lower volume of three point shots taken often result in higher percentages because you're not jacking up as many shots and because it's easier to have a randomly high percentage if you shoot just 20 and make 8. Also, Jordan was never really a good three point shooter throughout his career except for the three year period where the three point line was lowered to 22 1/2 feet.
Thank you BBALLBREAKDOWN for giving me something to study during quarantine

That's why his finals performances are always so damn good! It's just so natural.. He isn't forcing stats or forcing a legendary moment.. He just rises to the opportunities presented to him.. and that is why he is THE GOAT!
I just watched that entire game the other day on NBA league pass. MJ is the GOAT
For free?
Yeah bro how do you do that? Do you get 80s finals games too or just specific highlighted games from the past?
I got Spectrum cable . And it was just playing old games on Nbatv since there is no NBA
People who have followed his career from 84 till he retired know he is the goat..lebron is social media espn goat..not basketball
@@OGGOAT23 Facts.... These People make me Sick
Coach, you missed one important point: the narrative before the series was that Jordan couldn't hit threes. So, he shrugged acting surprised "how did I hit all those if I can't hit threes. I don't know, go figure".
the media had compared Jordan and Drexler stating that Drexler was as talented as Jordan but a better 3-point shooter....and Michael heard that....
@@edgarjandi2824 "That's all I needed."
The point of this game for MJ was to show that if he did take 3's, he would make them. They were all saying that was a 'weakness' but Jordan said their style of play didn't require it. He wanted to show that he could go toe to toe with 3 point shooters and it was a very distant second in the league to Drexler. The shrug was saying "I told you I could shoot 3s if our game required it of me."
John Griller Another statement Jordan made was that if teams were allowed to play zone defense, he wouldn’t have scored nearly as much. I have the article and can prove it
Knuckles the Echidna no need to prove it bc I already know that statement that Jordan admitted to.
But do you think teams didn’t get away with zone defense back when Jordan played?
Knuckles the Echidna the pace makes up for it he’d still as much if not more unless it was zone and offensive were not as protected
I love how MJ didn't stat pad in a blowout.
@Allen Lorenzo Lebron.
He also closed his eyes when attempting to make free throws during the 1992 Summer Olympics for Team USA.
@Dominic dominic That made no sense. They were pretty good they actually won game 2.
Dominic dominic
That doesn’t stop LBJ though, any team whether it’s weak or not, he stat pads losing or winning.
@Dominic dominic That IS the defensive strat. Just like when Spurs would let Lebron shoot 3s in the finals. Were not talking about Spurs bad defense now are we? The difference is Michael made his, when it mattered the most, every single time. That's why he's the greatest of all time.
PLEASE DO KOBES 81 POINT GAME NALYSIS
Yes
As a raptors fan....I approve this message
I think he has. I could be wrong though
Dr Respect he’s made a video comparing Kobe’s 81 points to Michaels 69 points. However, he’s never made a video only focusing on Kobe’s 81 points. Also that video is 7 years old.
i love how you even explain the mechanics of shooting and how they get to make the shots they make. you're awesome dude
Thx so much!!
This is exactly what I need. You explaining old school vids how you do about the present day. It will finally show me in depth how good Michael was because I’m too young to really know
Another MJ moment is when he hit the and one on the Phoenix Suns and made Charles Barkley fall into his knees, MJ finishes with 55.
LlchLmprgVBrtnXCC _00 probably my favorite MJ game
the great thing about these games are the stories behind it
this is the game after charles barkley said that basketball God wants them to win the finals series
Ardin Hajihil yup, iconic
There will never be another NBA players like this. The game the look the shoes I mean MJ was straight out a comic book lol
The Bulls were a Triangle offense machine back then. That's why the offense is everywhere in the NBA, specifically the Warriors and Spurs. Tex Winter deserves major credit.
He sure does. He was my mentor, as I was a triangle offense coach too
Just imagine that Portland drafted MJ at '84...i mean, we all heared that like a zillion times ,but just imagine MJ and Clyde in your frickin frenchise!
The catalyst besides MJ, was a some dude by the name of Scottie Pippen!!! In the March 1st game that season, Scottie shredded Jerome Kersey by 18 points; it wasn't bad enough for Portland that they already had to deal with Jordan blow-torching them in Game 1.
The move at 6:30 was not a travel. He did not gather until after he got his right foot on the ground. It's the same reason that James Harden's stepbacks aren't travels
I was confused for a second to, but it's a travel
I agree. This wouldn't be a travel in today's NBA for the reasons you stated. Is coach saying this should have been a travel back then based on the rules/interpretation of the rule at the time? It wasn't clear.
Ok, rewatched think I agree he gathered the ball on the left foot
No, no...it's a travel ✌🏻

I can't believe you didn't mention how LOUD the old Chicago Stadium was! 113 decibels at the loudest, which can damage your ears. I only went there once or twice as a little kid, but that place was LOUD, and Chicago could rock the house like no one else in the league.
I was at every home game, I guess my ears are still ringing and I forgot!! But I did mention that crowd was going crazy after the tip dunk 😳
@@bballbreakdown Wow, those must be some memories! I'm super jealous! Oh yeah, you can hear how loud the crowd was even on TV. I've been watching some of those great old games during the quarantine too. Video idea: who would win in a game -- the 1996 Bulls or 2016 Warriors?
great vid
😀💭. Love those memories. Thank you for that coach!! 💯👏🏀
Coach Nick I was wondering if you can do a breakdown of the Orlando Magic in the mid-90s, and some of their games. I've heard that the Shaq-Penny era was held back because of bad coaching and that was the primary reason they lost to the Rockets in the 95 finals. Obviously Brian Hill was not the best coach, but at one point Orlando was able to assemble the most talented team in basketball before falling apart due to bad decisions by management. You are a coach Nick, and you can tell if a team is poorly coached or not. Is it true that Orlando Magic in the mid-90s was poorly coached? I also ask this because I do get tired of the Jordan videos.
For sure I’ll see if I can find some games from that series. Also, Penny got injured, so that’s what happened to that team sadly
I would love to see it happen. The mid 90's Magic were the real deal. A fascinating young team challenging the EC powerhouses Knicks/Pacers/Bulls only to fail spectacularly against the Rockets. I was devastated when Shaq left and Penny got injured. It could have been a dynasty.
@@bballbreakdown All the games are on youtube (95 finals), the whole game. From what I heard coaching was the primary reason why Orlando lost that series. They kept Horace Grant in the 3-point line preventing Grant to double-team Hakeem. When Grant doubled-teamed Hakeem, Houston would punish Orlando by kicking it to a shooter from the 3-point line, and Brian Hill didn't make any adjustments. I don't think Hill was a good coach because every-time Orlando lost in the playoffs from 94-96 they got swept. A team with Penny and Shaq, two franchise players shouldn't be getting swept in the playoffs.
@@owainkanaway8345 in 1996, Shaq got locked by Rodman lelz, but yeah, he and Penny could've been more
@@Joshua_23 Horace Grant got injured in that series, who would have dealt with Rodman. Penny was also injured (Penny's injury started against Detroit in the 1st round of the 96 playoffs). Orlando actually matches up well against Chicago, but because they had a coach who didn't know how to make adjustments, nor make his players better they faltered against elite teams.
Please do more content like this! Its awesome
Fantastic analysis. Arguably the best.
Thr shrug was Michael saying that drexler wouldn't come to guard him. Michael said after the game that drexler would rather I shoot over him than drive past him.
Yesssss more retro content
Thanks coach, that was great!! I remember that series well....Could you do some other retro breakdowns?!
Thanks!! I’ll do some more, stay tuned

Would love to see more videos of players from the 90s, 80s and even 70s.
Loved this - memories
Michael was a different beast, while not know as a 3pt shooter here are his averages in the playoffs
1991: 38.5%
1992: 38.6%
1993: 38.9 %
1995: 36.7%
1996: 40.3%
averaging 38.7% from 3pt range during the first threepeat and 38.9% overall during that strech
If Michael played in today's game it's beyond scary to think what he'd average.
Bro can you please keep doing these types of videos
It's a misnomer that Jordan couldn't shoot 3s. He simply didn't see it as an efficient way to score because it was so easy for him to either get off closer jumpshots or get to the basket and get fouled. Jordan was the best midrange shooter in history and shot 51.5% for his career before his last 2 seasons playing into his 40s brought that number down to 50%. His shooting form was technically perfect and had he wanted to shoot 3s more he would have shot around 37-38% which is solid.
Joel Driver Also, it was before the 3 point revolution. If he played today, he would take a lot more 3’s and work on a lot more 3’s.
can we see a breakdown of MVP Rose and Drose Now ?

BBALLBREAKDOWN posted a video! *Everyone liked that*
I watched this live . good times
People conviently forget how great the players were that Jordan went against in order to support the argument that Lebron faced tougher teams therefore should be the goat foh.
This is a good point
People who make those arguments are stupid. Because of 90's Bulls, Top 50 players & HOFs like Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Ewing, Miller (without naming other great players he faced) couldn't won a ring. Now could Jordan not faced tougher competition? With that logic, we can argue that any dominant team in the history of the NBA is not that great because they did not faced a tough competition.
They say the pistons with 30yo IT and 28yo Dumars were "old" but the spurs with 35 duncan and 30+yo parker and Ginobili was "great competition". Also, the Celtics trio was also 30+yo when Lebron beat them, where they "old" too?
A statement Jordan made was that if teams were allowed to play zone defense, he wouldn’t have scored nearly as much. I have the article and can prove it
@@afrofree4950 He was speaking from experience because he played in an era where the interior talent was peaking. Because he played in a team that didn't utilize spacing the floor like today's teams, he's assuming everybody would smother him. But with 3 pointers as prevalent as it is now ie. floor spacing, Jordan would be 2 or 3 levels higher than what Kawhi(same game, but MJ was better) can show now.
Also, that defense change happened in 2001 and Jordan balled out in 2003 at age 40. We might need a time check on when he said that because he scored a bunch at 40.
This gave me goosebumps😨
6:24 Michael hands are f*ckin massive dude. It's insane how large his hands are for a guard.
6:23 you’re wrong. After the bounce he gets the two steps, left foot pivot then fades.
in my opinion one of top 5 MJ's games of all Time

Can you do Michael Jordan’s game 4 of the 1993 nba finals next

I remember this game. Media was trying to establish another rivalry like Bird v Magic. They went on about Clyde being the better shooter. Before this game, the commentator commented about MJ shooting 3s for an hour before suiting up, lol. Yea, he knew what was about to happen, maybe not to what extent, but he definitely took it personally!
Coach Nick, you should do a video on how the 2016 Warriors went 73-9 but lost in the finals 👍

Chris
He should do a video on how that finals win for Cleveland has become overrated. Yea it’s coming back 3-1, but that same team blew out GS in game 3, how in game 4 at home they could’ve easily won had LBJ played better than scoring 25 points. Remember he had about 7 pts late in the 4th when the game was pretty much done with. Series could’ve been tied at 2-2, also he needs to talk about how Cleveland had the best record leading up to the finals (12-3), had a better offense/defense rating than GS and even shot better from the field/3pt. Needs to mention how LBJ had Kyrie who averaged 27 ppg, THE most ever by a sidekick in a finals series while playing against Curry/Klay who shot bad.
LBJ fans want to act like this was some “unbeatable” team, as if games weren’t there for the taking, when they just blew them out in gm 3 and could’ve tied it at home in gm 4.
Do more retro breakdowns like wilkins, kareem, bird, frobe, jcrawford, or any iconic players in 70s 80s 90s
I'm just mad Jordan didn't play this area so we can get quality videos of him playing 😭😂
More importantly, the media hype going into the series was drexler and Jordan were about equal with drexler being the better 3 point shooter. The other players would decide the series. Any time Jordan was challenged, he rose to prove it wrong. It’s no coincidence that Jordan was shooting so many 3s in this game.
Cool video, thanks! A suggestion only: could you decrease a little bit the volume of the music? At times I struggle to hear your voice :)

It was a statement game for Jordan ...He wanted to show everyone Clyde wasn't on his level
If MJ had the tim grover version of analytics in 1990--in other words some crazy guy who sat him down and said "mike if you want to really make it to the top you gotta start shooting threes"--then knowing MJ's maniacal nature, we might be talking about him being the GOAT 3 pt shooter

I'm tired of GOAT debates... Just watch Jordan's games and make your own mind. And please don't forget to count the rings.
I watched this game live, like I did most Bulls games back then. MJ said publicly the reason for the shrug was because he felt like he couldn’t miss and was similar to a out of body experience. “The Zone”. “The Zone” was talked about by every sports broadcaster after that for a long time. Side note: the Jordans he’s wearing is still my favorite of all time. I got my son some retros of them, similar shoe but with today’s engineering, 2 seasons ago and he loved them. Solid black with very little red & a smear of white. Was also the most comfortable Jordan to come out back then.
I find it fascinating that the zone isn’t talked about. I think shooting has improved to the point where more players are in the zone more often, so it’s not a thing.
