I recently took my polo to a garage to change a headlight bulb, they had the car in there for a good 30 minutes doing it, then the guy says oh we had trouble with it as they are a nightmare to change on these, they claimed they had to jack the car up on the ramp to get underneath it, and remove the wheel arch panel just to gain access to the bulb! Total fabrication, and they charged me £22.00. Needless to say I wont be going there again, and should any more bulbs need replacing in the future I will do it myself now after watching this video. Thanks for sharing.
Comprehensive, step by step instructions: much fuller and clearer than those from male contributors. Well done telling us that the only tool required is supplied by VW with the car. I replaced the headlamp bulb on my Polo in 5 minutes. Many thanks and well done.
I followed this video today and it was very helpful. Thank you! A note to other VW polo owners: Check your light bulbs first before starting this. My polo has H7 light bulbs, but I know of others that have H4 bulbs (go figure...)
It might be related to having a single or dual headlight. All trims except the cheapest ones should have dual, as far as I know. Philips' official video shows the single headlight version, and they say it's H4. I also have a dual headlight version, from early 2010, and it's H7.
Just followed these steps with the 18yo daughter for the first time. Neither of us overly tools orientated and did take us a touch longer than 5 minutes but boom, all done - thanks very much :-)
I took my car to the garage & he was talking about taking the wheel off to get to light to change, bought bulb & changed myself thanks so much to you 🙌
Thank you so much - a really great video. I changed a headlight bulb following your advice. One extra little tip I picked up while doing it - either side of the hole where you twist out the bulb, there is a small screw. I had to loosen those screws slightly to able to twist the new bulb back in. The screws were quite tight so I wasn't able to twist the new bulb back in place very easily. However, after loosening both the screws, the bulb twisted back in place easily. I then tightened both screws gently after the bulb was twisted back in place.
Thankyou for the video! I would also make sure to disconnect the headlamp unit from the power its just one cable on the back of the lamp. And I actually found out the whole lamp unit has a kind of slide/clip mechanism underneath that can make it a bit of a trouble to get the whole headlamp unit out of the car but if you try wiggling it upwards aswell with a bit of force then it should work👍 the head lamp unit also has a discription on the side about which lamp u should put in to it h7 or h4.
Ta very much! Never fixed a car in my life, managed this in 10 mins. Hardest bit was getting the whole unit out after unscrewing, took a bit of heft on the front side.
I think those screws are for the beam adjustment for the headlights. If you take them out they need to go back exactly where they came from or else your headlight beams will be out of alignment. That is why the hole in the car is enlarged, to enable you to move the headlight to adjust them. I drew round the screws with a sharpie before removing so they went back exactly where they came from. Hope that helps.
Thank you for this video. I have just spent an hour trying to get my shovel hands into the tiny gap wondering how the hell the bulb will ever go back in 🤣.... Much appreciated!!
Thank you so much for the video, I’ve just been able to change the bulb on my headlight after watching it. Couldn’t believe how straightforward it was (if a little fiddly) on my Polo to extract the bulb from the connector. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the result 💪
sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Brysen Shiloh I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hello. Is this the same manual for a Polo from this year but with xenon headlights? So I can change the xenon bulbs just like this manual? Or do I have to go through the wheel arch? Thanks
I changed my bulb but then a light popped up on my dashboard and it means that their is a problem with my light bulb thats weird did i put my whole headlight back in wrong or what?
That easy? I took the headlight bulb out on the driver side without removing the whole cluster but I I couldn’t get the bulb out of the connector. Will have to try again tomorrow.
Everyone always told me "Don't touch the bulb, don't do it in the rain, don't it in the cold, don't do it if you don't have gloves, don't do it X Y Z" Just tell when to do it..... Use a garage, use gloves, do it quickly.... Really????? If I didn't watch this video I would have had my shitty VW Polo in a fucking surgical room..... Thank you for quelling my worries.
Really disappointed with this video. My Mrs said her passenger side bulb had gone, so I undid the headlight as described, then after changing the bulb, I found out it was the drivers side bulb. Why didn’t the video warn me? 0/10
For the past 5 years I've been trying to squeeze my big hands in from the back. Thank you so much!!!!

Do you know where the tool is located?
@@philipreynolds2838 The tool is screwdriver shaped with a star key tip. On my Polo it's located in the boot with the jack on top of the spare wheel.
@@clear-vision brilliant thank you for replying

Best video showing how to do this on UA-cam. Succinct and to the point.
Thank you alot, you saved me from going crazy (struggled 1hour before I saw your video) 😂
Ta very much! Never fixed a car in my life, managed this in 10 mins. Hardest bit was getting the whole unit out after unscrewing, took a bit of heft on the front side.
Thanks Emma-this is easy to do following your instructions.Much appreciated
Thank you, Emma. I just followed these steps, and it was super easy. 🙌🎉

Thanks so much Emma , very easy to follow video , worked perfectly 👏🏽👏🏽
Great, changed both my bulbs in less than 10 mins. Cheers
Thank you so much! Was going to pay to get it changed but this video is so useful i will do it myself:)
Thank you so much for the video, I’ve just been able to change the bulb on my headlight after watching it. Couldn’t believe how straightforward it was (if a little fiddly) on my Polo to extract the bulb from the connector. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the result 💪
The best one - simple and accurate. Thanks!

Just what needed, thank you. No more scraped knuckles and the cat had come out of hiding!

What a brilliant review. I'm going to try and replace the sidelights, hopefully it's the same procedure.
sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Brett Benicio Instablaster :)

@Brysen Shiloh It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account!
@Brett Benicio You are welcome xD
Thankyou for the video. That was a bit of a nightmare
Hi this is a very helpful video, but is it possible you could make a video on how to change the high beam headlight? Thank you so much.
Is this the same procedure to change the high beam as well??
When I was buying my 2016 polo it was advertised LED lights but it doesn’t have it
Absolutely smashed it, awesome video!!
I always used to get Halfords to do mine, but after seeing this one, I will give it a try myself! Thanks a lot, great video!

Sorry I don't know.
Thanks Emma, you’re a legend!
Can you link the bulb you used please
So much easier than other videos 👍
I changed my bulb but then a light popped up on my dashboard and it means that their is a problem with my light bulb thats weird did i put my whole headlight back in wrong or what?
Thanks so much for showing this! Just changed my driver side sidelight. :-)
Thank you Emma.
What was the screw head that you used? my Polo doesn't have any tools, that came with it.
It's called a torx key (sometimes known as star screwdriver or bit) it should be with the jack tools and is often double sided.
T30 torx

Great explanation thanks :-) Will get onto it at daylight tomorrow :-)
Great video and very nicely explained, thank you!
Thank you what a big help this video was. 👍😁
Very helpful - thank you 🙂
If the car came with the screwdriver where would it be stored?
With the tools beside the spare wheel
How to unplug the cable?
Just pull on the black plastic part (not the cables)
Thanks 🥰
Thank you ❤
Brill super clear
