I love how mr. Noy is as funky and groovy as a guitarplayer could ever dream of, yet nothing in the way he mooves suggests that he is doing anything more funky, than solving a word-puzzle.

+manifestgtr Unfortunately, It seems way too many people still don't know who Oz Noy is. I think to the uneducated listener (not you), his "disjointed" sound turns them off but if you listen very closely you can hear the fusing of several styles. I think he lulls people in with his heavy blues influence and then he smacks them into submission with his nasty Funk & Jazz licks never mind the solos. Yea, he's very much overlooked.

I have Dave Weckl to thank for motivating me into taking drum lessons.
A friend had suggested I go to see this guy. Well I'd never been to a drum clinic before & I'd never heard of this guy from the States before either.
I went to see Dave at a drum clinic in Brisbane, Australia around about 1990.
I was really, really impressed with how good he was.
In question time I asked him.
What were the steps you took to become such a good drummer?
He replied - Taking drum lessons - learning to read music - learning drum rudiments & studying and becoming competent at (not just learning a little of) as many different genres of music & drumming styles as possible.
The very next day I looked in the phone book & found Col Gillies Rudimental Drum School & took 2 lessons a week for about a year & a half.
I then did a full time course at the Institute of Music in Sydney.
    So here's to you Dave.
Thanks for those inspiring words at that clinic, I wouldn't be 1/5th as good a drummer, if I hadn't taken your advice that day :)

    • @kavemankarl2588

Perhaps the reason you hadn't heard of this guy "from the States" before is that if you play anything fusion or even bordering fusion you spend a lot of time in Europe where the genre enjoys far greater popularity than it does in North America (and Australia, I assume) to my greatest dismay. Good thing the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Drum Fest attracts many of them but getting tickets is no mean feat. No Fest this year though, thanks to the pandemic and ensuing confinement regulations. Oh well, I'll survive (hopefully).

    • @FesliyanStudios
      @FesliyanStudios 9 років тому +4

Tjfreak I'd have to agree. I get the same feeling and can't really consider myself a drummer, even though I know it's not the correct way to think. Imagine if he saw someone like himself when he wasn't good and got discouraged? He'd never make it to where he is now.

    • @spencerj

FesliyanStudios I 100% disagree. I used to play solely cover music until I started listening to bands where I rhythmically couldn't understand even the hook of their songs. It inspired me to use drums as the medium of musical understanding. I know that sounds kindof pretentious, and I'm not going to sit on my throne and say I can play anything close to the shed he played, or even understand some parts; but I will say that is part of the journey. Expand what you can play into what you can't, and you can start on the process of understanding what the greats are playing. I am not there yet, but I happily accept that there is a long way to go, and all the while playing the music to get there is worth the time I have to put in practicing technique.

Only 3-4 mins of solo but one of best I've heard from him, and backed up brilliantly by a great guitar and bass groove. Every drummer is different (and how cool is that) but Wecksy is the only one who for me most closely resembles a drumming volcano: he builds and builds and builds his solos and then completely explodes the last 2 mins in a way that makes my jaw dislocate itself from its socket and drop to the floor. There's no pain, just wonder and pure fist-in-the-air I-want-more joy. This solo one is no exception. Masterful.

I would not say this was jazz, more fusion. This grooves rather than swings. Also I would say this is more of a rock signature in time. I listen to jazz under duress and really just for the drums but I would listen to this for pleasure. It has all the great musicianship that jazz musicians bring but without the annoying jazz. This is the sort of stuff I used to go to Ronnie Scott's to listen. Reminds me a little like the drumming on some later Miles Davis albums. The early albums were also great for drumming but I did not like the music that much but the later stuff was much better with more hi hat snare based rock beats rather than the annoying cymbal triplets of jazz.

What's that "mullet" thing in the US? It certainly does not fit everyone but (to us europeans) it's just another hair cut, albeit quite strongly associated with the late 1980s.

This is absolutely without a doubt what the original Traditional Grip is all about absolutely astonishing with the left hand speaking softly with ghost notes thru out this this beautiful composition all so very smoothly with hands floating thru the air like butterfly wings so cool & graceful like a true Master as he sits down on a Masterpiece 2 the Drum Set his canvas & his sticks painting a very lovely picture of so much brilliance with impeccable & outstanding Artistry, Skill, Focus & Workmanship. This my friends is what the true nature & definition of what playing a real Drum Set is all about because they are your voice while your hands are doing the speaking 2 all those that want 2 listen 2 what TUBS are really all about.

I grovel at Dave's feet, but I have to say Noy is The Man. I think I've loved everything I've heard from him. He puts many drummers' sense of groove and rhythm to shame, and such an original sounds/style, too.

    Can we compare the both.
Every drummer is unique an has there own style.
    Enjoy their differences.

Endless discussions about Dave and Mike ... what's the sense about it? Both are outstanding, but the music they play is very different. So everybody has got his own world and may be both of them would not like to jump into the other's world. I cannot imagine Mike to do Dave's job with Oz Noy or Mike Stern and it's the same with Dave in a band like Dream Theater or Neal Morse group. Would be interesting to hear such an experiment though ...
My admiration for both is extremely high and and I want to leave it like that.
