@@yvesturgeon9585 Agreed. Isn't that glorious? But seriously, it's much more useful than that: Does amazing vintage sounding dub delay a la King Tubby and Lee Perry, sounds like nothing else modern. But yes, can also be used by itself to drive the girlfriend fucking insane.
My first synth. Learnt Pink Floyd’s On The Run from a UA-cam comment: “Octave 32, wave square, range key, notes: BDED AGAB (going up the scale - apart from A - G) Other settings: Peak 50%, EG flat, target VCF, mode 1shot, wave triangle Rate 60%. No Bass Drum or Snare drum. Hi Hat on steps 1, 5 & 8 Start with cutoff 0%, intensity 0% & rythm off - then raise cutoff & introduce rythm. Now play with cutoff & intensity.”
My very first big boy synth! The cutoff filter/gate is absolutely mean and the drum machine sounds amazing through distortion. Still holds a very special place in my heart.
Haha - the sliding Uli face when you mentioned the Monotribe 2 had me laughing out loud. Genius. Your reviews really are a great melange of comedy and information.
These came out when I was in college. My very first analog synth and my introduction to hardware music production. The synth engine is especially good for synthesized drum sounds and percussive sounds; the otherwise distracting clicking is actually handy in this case. The rate of the LFO goes faster than any other analog synth I’ve used and allows for the creation of unique timbres. I find it shines best when paired with a sampler. As you suggested the monologue is probably the more practical choice these days, the slim keys are actually some of my favorite on a synth, however, I keep my monotribe for the immediacy, portability, kitsch drums (that hit hard when distorted/overdriven), sample and hold and nostalgia.
I think it's important to point out that it does have CV/gate control as you don't have to mod it with midi to use external keyboards/sequencers. I loved watching those Kid Shurke videos.
I love this show so much and watch it every week! Looking forward to you eventually getting your hands on the new Roland Aira Compact series and making videos about them. Thanks for being my favorite UA-cam channel!
its an excellent machine. love mine, have a couple. really held me down over the years. some magic in this little box. got the msw midi kit and the updates. ill never be without.
I have 4 of them because these things have that sound. Its limitations is what makes it all the more interesting to use. This is a classic up there in the same league as the minimoog. Nothing else I have gets close to real time inspiration these give. If there's a monotribe 2 it needs to have the same exact sound to begin with before I'd consider buying it over another used monotribe.
Alternatively, they added internal support for Pitch/Gate CV, so if you get the right adapter, you can use it with anything that can sequence analog gear
When Korg released it in 2011, I saw the review and thought "wtf? Sounds so weird" Now I'm up to it. Yesterday I received a package with my first monotribe and I'm happy. Great synth!
It's worth mentioning that after firmware update 2.1, the Monotribe's synth part can be externally triggered using CV/Gate via Sync In jack (no mods required). All that's needed is the proper TRRS splitter cable, connected to Sync In. Works great with the BSP, Keysteps and Microbrute. The only downside is that you lose Sync In capabilities when using this feature - not a big deal if you're using it mainly as a synth (no drums), otherwise just use it as sync master. Also the clicks can be smoothed out by adding a capacitor between two easily accessible points on the PCB.
Nice, your timing is spot on again. I just ordered the midi mod kit yesterday! I’m looking forward to using it again, and your jams were particularly inspiring!
I have some great a great memory of this box I was working at a music store And it was a chill moment/day. We decided to hook it up to a pa system and whenever the store was empty we would jam on this box. So fun.

Well, the clicky envelope sucks ass big time, it's a true nightmare... Luckily, there's an easy mod for softening it and getting rid of the awful clicks which is a must-do for anyone who actually want to make music with the Tribe. Once I read about this mod I immediately applied it on mine: life is waaaayy better since then! Aaaand also the first time I'm submitting some criticism: Hey, you forgot to mention and/or to explore the CV/GATE mode which has been the biggest upgrade of the Monotribe by miles, added by firmware update 2.11 in 2013 (or 2015?) When played or sequenced by devices which use a single combo-jack socket for cv and gate output, only a simple TRRS to TRRS jack cable is needed which then goes into the Tribe's Sync In. When using devices with more traditional separate cv and gate outputs, two 3.5 mm jack cables and a small TRRS jack to 2x TRS sockets breakout dongle is needed, commonly used (and shipped) with PC headsets. I'm using mine with the latter wireup, playing & sequencing the Tribe by a Keystep or a Monostation. Works like a charm, you really should have tried it.

Years later I wondered and searched ebay...that was the moment I hated people. Still haven't gotten over that. Seeing the prices in your video: at the time I looked for it again, it was double that amount.
I liked the Korg Monotribe and had the Midi-interface from “Amazing Machines”, which was very easy to install. A limited Korg MS-20 kinda sound and a small drummachine alla KR-55 in one desktop…. That is a great combo. I remember using Monotribe live on stage for improvising. Basically starting the recording and roll a finger back/forth on the ribbon a few times and you maybe have something interesting [Like rolling a dice]
Fantastic! I have one of these, and while I don't make real music with it, it's fun to jam out and make some cool sounds. I hope Korg does a v2 update with MIDI and maybe another oscillator. Cheers :)
If I had that when I was 13 in 1977, I would have been so happy and blown away. Now, I'm jaded, and it looks like a headache to use, like you explained.
MIDI mod is essential and u can reduce the clicks by filtering out the note off messages. There's an Ableton device designed for that, and it provides control of some parameters and a "patch save" feature. Still pretty clicky though :(
Yipikaye ! the most hilarious video on your chain. I've forgeted that monotribe but it sound strong. I know at least why my tiny pocket jeans is used for... thanks. Hall of fame at 1'11.
For some perverse reason I really love the way the filter on that thing screams through the built in speaker - the sound is so acidic even a 303 can't compare (at least not without a solid dose of distortion).
Thanks for another fab show. Monotribe is more full featured than I realised. S&H ?!?! Why didn't they give is that on the monologue. Btw, Patreon slipped up by not including you in the synthfluencers supergroup.
I really regret selling mine, I can’t remember why I did. I want another but these prices are just impossible to justify given the prices of the MS-20 mini!

Years later I wondered and searched ebay...that was the moment I hated people. Still haven't gotten over that. Seeing the prices in your video: at the time I looked for it again, it was double that amount.
Sounds lovely! Nice work Flo!❤️🤘🏽
Thanks!
I have one, and love it. I think it sounds better than the ms20 😬 there's just something about the sequencer that makes it really fun to play with.
It certainly got that MS20 flavor
i think it has the ms20 filter...
Yeah, it can be quite random
Got to admire seeing Kafka on the book shelf! Another great video and looking forward to the reported release of the “Hirotribe.”
Thank you!!!
fun demo tracks this week!
Thanks!!!
I kind of got in a rut with mine and got rid of it. I may have to get another one, I just love the sound of that MS-20 filter on it so much.
That filter is really nice!
Fantastic! I have one of these, and while I don't make real music with it, it's fun to jam out and make some cool sounds.
I hope Korg does a v2 update with MIDI and maybe another oscillator.
Cheers :)
I'm afraid Behringer will be first;)
Korg's update with MIDI and two oscillators (but no drums) is called Monologue.
If I had that when I was 13 in 1977, I would have been so happy and blown away. Now, I'm jaded, and it looks like a headache to use, like you explained.
I feel you!!!
Great as always Florian. Thx🖤
Thank you!!!
MIDI mod is essential and u can reduce the clicks by filtering out the note off messages. There's an Ableton device designed for that, and it provides control of some parameters and a "patch save" feature. Still pretty clicky though :(
Great technique!
Loved the final dude 07:53 ! RELEASE THE TRACK ! Squarepusher is taking notes right now hahaha
Thanks!!! Got a full track on my Patreon (end of plug;)
Two words.. " Noise switch " the thing I like the most about this overall solid machine...Love it!!
👍👍👍
Great stuff as usual, greetings from Brasil
Obrigado!!!
Yipikaye ! the most hilarious video on your chain.
I've forgeted that monotribe but it sound strong.
I know at least why my tiny pocket jeans is used for... thanks.
Hall of fame at 1'11.
Thank you so much!!!
The sample hold with the filter saved me during the covid lockdown
S/H is good for your health;)
For some perverse reason I really love the way the filter on that thing screams through the built in speaker - the sound is so acidic even a 303 can't compare (at least not without a solid dose of distortion).
Probably mic it up with a 20k condenser tube mic?;)
@@AudioPilz Of course, to preserve the high end ;)
Up was the best pixar/dreamworks style flick
wall-e was great too but Up is a damn emotional rollercoaster
Agreed! Well-made too!
my first analog synth! it's still really fun and the filter is absolutely monstrous.
Agreed, great filter!
It's firmly in my never-ever-ever-sell collection.
That's where it belongs!
I would love to see a Bad Gear live show, just AudioPilz on stage with a setup of solely bad gear equipment jamming would be incredible
Let's see if I can squeeze in a world tour;)
Have you seen ua-cam.com/video/fIozkar47cI/v-deo.html ?
Thanks for another fab show. Monotribe is more full featured than I realised. S&H ?!?! Why didn't they give is that on the monologue.
Btw, Patreon slipped up by not including you in the synthfluencers supergroup.
Yeah, that S/H is nice! I don't think that would have worked out so well;)
damn nice intro!! always loved the phat sounds of the monotribe!
Thanks!
LMAO, yours is the most fun and entertaining music gear channel ever!
Thank you!!!
I really regret selling mine, I can’t remember why I did. I want another but these prices are just impossible to justify given the prices of the MS-20 mini!
Yeah, the mini is very tempting
Pilzaddict here. Any analogue mono synth that has a 16 step sequencer is an acid-box. I never warmed to the Monotribe (despite it's dope name) but I respect the sound. Cheers
Maybe we should exclude the Rhythm Wolf's synth;)
