- Toronto To Cornwall - Testing The ElectroAir Electronic Ignition
In this aviation adventure, join me as I take my aircraft, a Cessna 172 with the call sign Fox Mike Victor Uniform, on a journey to Cornwall. The day starts with the chilly weather, prompting me to skip the usual intro and head straight to the plane for a warm-up.
As we taxi and prepare for takeoff, I share some technical details about the electronic ignition system recently installed in the aircraft, highlighting its advantages over traditional magnetos. Throughout the flight, I meticulously note performance numbers, such as fuel burn, RPM, and true airspeed, comparing them to pre-upgrade data.
Flying over familiar landscapes and reminiscing about childhood memories on an island, I discuss the significance of tracking flight data using tools like Savvy Aviation and CloudAhoy. The journey takes us over the Thousand Islands region, where the border between Canada and the United States meanders through countless islands.
While enjoying the scenic views, I provide updates on the Trio autopilot system and a recent enhancement with a Dynon ARINC module. Though basic functionality is currently engaged, I eagerly anticipate a firmware update for seamless integration between Trio and Dynon, promising a more advanced autopilot system.
Approaching Cornwall airport, I capture the landing process, highlighting the airport's bustling activity, reasonable fuel prices, and a quick pit stop for a sweet treat. After refuelling, we depart for the return journey to my home base at Oshawa airport, discussing the flight's key takeaways and the overall success of the electronic ignition system.
Upon landing, I express my satisfaction with the system's flawless performance, emphasizing its reliability and the long-term cost savings it offers. As the adventure concludes, I plan to review the collected data, crunch the numbers, and share the insights on fuel efficiency achieved with the new electronic ignition system.
Thank you for joining me on this aviation journey, and I look forward to sharing more adventures with you soon. Safe skies!

Love the ATC transcription!
Another shout out for the addition of the information bubbles. Really enhances the videos. Thanks again Glen from YAM and ANJ!
The "call outs" that popped up in the video were a nice touch.
I like the graphic you are doing for misc. info like sightseeing. Nice touch. Well done!
i'm not normally an interested in flying kind of guy, but i have to say, i've really enjoyed this series...all the way from the start. it's great to see the evolution of MVU. I love seeing the mechanical aspect of aircraft... and how technology has changed these machines! i can't wait to see more in the future!
Be interesting to see the comparison for fuel burn in summertime. As soon as you said you were feeling cold at the start, wondered how much effect volumetric efficiency was going to play.
Great you are honing in on the data on your investment!
Love the information blocks you put up for radio comms and general info as you fly. Fantastic slick way of keeping us in the loop :)
Thanks for the info graphics 👍
That’s great. I should look at that for my plane when my mags get older. Thanks for sharing!
The Info bubbles are a great addition to an already great channel. Thanks .
Not a pilot but love these flights over Canada…. Cheers. Ottawa
Hey Glen, thanks for sharing the process of testing the new electronic ignition. Did you notice any performance differences, particularly in climb out and take off?
It’s pretty impressive how low of an airspeed you get MVU off the ground at. Shame that the FAA doesn’t want us to have your STOL kit down here!
MVU seems to get up to speed / off the ground a little bit quicker, if I really wanted to be aggressive with the short field takeoff I could rotate at 35 mph into ground effect. But before I can definitively give numbers I'll have to collect more data.
I'm pretty sure the FAA granted an STC for the WingX extensions earlier this year, you should check with them.
Great content. I very much enjoyed the information bubbles. I had to mention it as I'm sure it adds a lot of extra time to your editing.
Great video! The overlays with informations about the flight are a really nice addition. I’m a PPL from the Montreal area and I fly often in eastern Ontario from Hawkesbury to Cornwall. The St-Lawrence river is so beautiful from the sky! I really enjoy to follow the evolution of MVU.
Really enjoyed the colored boxes of information to get a better understanding of what is happening.
I find it amusing hearing the place names, "I'm flying to Cornwall", that's going to take longer than 2 hrs Glen 😆 and then the Trent Severn, thats the wrong way round 😁
Please add my positive feedback on the “info blocks” to the 👍 you’ve received from others. They’re great!
I like the sightseeing footnotes!
Glenn this is my first time to see Cornwalls airport!!❤
Another +1 for the info boxes. Nice to see you happy with your latest upgrade. Was hoping for a shot of YGK and maybe catch a glimpse of my old house. Still, it was fun to see Eastern Ontario and the 1000 Islands from up there. I covered a lot of that territory, but only at motorcycle altitude. 😊
Keep those instruction box’s happening ! Excellent 👌
I grew up in Keene, just north of Rice lake.
That was an enjoyable flight, Glen! Thanks for taking us along. The new ignition system seems happy! I believe Honda used similar "double spark" ignition on some of their motorcycle engines - my 750 Four has that feature. It may have been a way for them to simplify the system, but added the benefit of cleaner combustion, which I'm not sure they expected, back in the 1960s. LOL Best wishes to you!
actually living my dream
My dad, originally from Pittsburgh, used take annual walleye fishing trips in the 60s to Rice Lake and had standing reservations at Pinecrest Cottages. I’ve heard many stories about his experiences there growing up. Thanks for sharing!
Loved the sightseeing tips and overlays.
Beautiful video!
Omg the scenes are so beautiful!!❤
Nice landing!
Great video, also love the information boxes! ☺️
Here’s another 👍🏻 for the info blocks. I’m sure it adds to your editing time but we appreciate the effort and info.
Random question: any logic behind why Canadian airport codes start with Y?
'Yes' there is logic to why some Canadian airport codes start with a Y...
Indicates that Yes the airport has a weather station, if there isn't a weather station like at Edenvale (CNV8), then the identifier starts with another letter.
The tracked info boxes are great :) and beautiful landing at the end there, Glen!
Awesome video Glen! Love the pop out text boxes…
love the new on-screen graphics!
Glenn!! Cornwall is 10 mins from me!! GREAT video!! ❤
Wasn’t too sure about your text call-out boxes at first - but I think I like them!
Hi Glen, Thanks for the video. Looks like we're neighbours. Sweet eMag, great upgrade.
We had a cottage on Rice lake too. My Grandmother's side of the family grew up in Gardenhill.
So far it looks like MVU is enjoying the new electronic magneto. Even 1 gallon per hour is quite an improvement and it probably will improve your overall engine performance. I really enjoy your vlog since the beginning. I have learned aviating in Sidney, BC, and then moved to Ottawa flying out of 😊 Flying. Eventually move to Montreal flying out of St-Hubert Airport. Love the scenery over the St-Lawrence.
Fun to fly along and see the scenes from the air. (from a neighbor across the lake in Rochester NY). Very familiar with the areas you're traveling in as they were vacation spots over the years.
Also really like the new info call-outs!
always love your vids?
Great video,as always. I like the informative graphical overlays. What are you using to add those to your videos?
I have to say, as a British viewer that title had me VERY alarmed for a second. I'm not sure Cessnas are certified to cross the atlantic!
The closest body of water is Lake Ontario. And of course the St. Lawrence River in my back yard.
Love the info boxes too! Have you always used 20 degrees on takeoff? I don't remember ever going beyond 10 degrees in the 172 I learned in.
0º - 20º is 'allowed' in the POH of this model of 172 - when I first learned in a later 172 model, I was told to never go beyond 10º. But long before I got my license I worked in the bush of Northern Canada and spent a lot of time being flown into / out of the bush - all of those pilots used 20º.
I'm still working out what is best under different conditions - the wing extensions, STOL cuff and VGs changed the flight characteristics of this plane by a wide margin.
Reality is: at Oshawa 0º flaps for take-off would be just fine. No real hurry to get off the ground there.
@@GlensHangar awesome thanks Glen!
Great video on the electronic ignition!
It was also fun to see you flying in my neck of the woods.
Cheers! Doug

Hey Glen! No mention whether or not this change over helped with that problem of switching gas tanks at altitude to prevent stalling? Great video!😎👍👍🍻
16:28 The 401 maybe 18 lanes, but it is still stop and go during rush hour and Sunday nights. The 407 is expensive, but so is my time.
Great vid as always. Next time, let me know you're coming out my way. I'll fly out to meet you, I'm a 10 min flight from Cornwall.
Damn! I wish I had thought of that!
Next time.
@@GlensHangar all good. I’ll come up to Oshawa soon. I’ll let you know. I want to check out MVU in person.
If you replaced the 2nd magneto with this same unit, would the two talk to eachother or perform independently? Happy Holidays! 🎄⛄
I never looked into that - I would think they'd talk to each other to stay in synch.
Hi. there bartofilms. Each Electroair Electronic Ignition System works independently. :)
Its a process to modernize MVU. ( Rice lake is 374 miles from me! )
Well done Glen and good info on the electroair! What change in stol and cruise speeds are you experiencing with the sportsman installation?? Would you do it again? Contemplating this myself! Thanks
I would definitely do the Sportsman Stol again! I did the Sportsman, VGs, and the WingX wing extensions all at the same time; no change in cruise speed but a huge change in slow speed / stall speed.
With 40º flaps the stall is now at 25 mph, and it's really docile, while the VGs give great rudder authority right down to the slowest speeds.
First magneto in 1832.
Might want to put a couple PSI in the nose wheel :)
It always looks low - but it's within spec.
Well crap. I am from Cornwall. I probably tracked you on my FR24 receiver. Been to Cornwall Reginal Airport lots of times.
Glen, what did you use for your aircraft ceiling? Did you attach it with Velcro or the self adhesive that a lot of rubber insulation/noise reduction matting has?
Love your series, installing Sportsman cuff on our 172N soon!
Thanks,
s-
It's Ensolite Foam from SCS Interiors, and I put it on with contact cement... the next owner may curse me for that.
Merry Christmas Glen from Sydney Australia. Well I didn't know that you were analysing your plane's engine performance graphically using Saavy.
* Do you send your oil for testing overandabove cutting open the filter and checking in-between the paper pletes?
* Do you fly below -0°c could icing be an issue?
🌲🌏
I do send out the oil for analysis, and have been keeping close track of that.
Icing is always a possible issue here, especially in the shoulder - beginning / end of winter. Just have to watch the forecast, temps and humidity.
Nice video! Do they let you overfly CFB Trenton or are you above the zone at 5500?
CFB Trenton is ground to 6000 - most days you'll get clearance to fly through. I usually just go around the edge and listen on their frequency.
I think the mic gain on your headset is too high or you might even have an issue with that headset. For example, the audio coming from ATC sounded perfect on the first few I heard (this comment is early in the video).
How was the Jet Stream 👍🏻🇬🇧
Can you utilize 2 electronic ignition systems to replace both mags if you install a backup battery system?
Yes - but for this engine, it's a bit of overkill / doesn't really benefit.
You call that French...? ...Nice video, you should have many hours of excellent flying in your "pristine" Cessna 172... Thanks again !
Yes - That's Québécois French.
Boy 'o Boy... i lived too long in Europe...Ha ! Yes, It sounds more like a dialect than French. BTB, very nice Cessna 172, Must be your Pride and Joy... again, Nice video, Thank You !@@GlensHangar
15:15 does it normally drag the tire when cornering?
Full brake on that side to 'pivot' the turn in a smaller radius. Loving my new wheels / brakes, kinda like driving a 'dozer.
nose wheel tyre looking abit deflated on that footage at cornwall when youre lining up to roll
Looks can be deceiving - it was checked before departure at Oshawa and found to be properly inflated.
Just out of curiosity : You mention no rpm drop going to the electric only. What is the drop going from electronic to the old mag?
Not much more - 30-50 rpm. As much as I get down on the old Case mags, they are pretty powerful; they just aren't (easily, cost effectively) repairable at this point.
Looking at adding electronic ignition to my 1956 172 continental O-300. I'll be very interested in your results. I'm also curious why you use 20° flaps for takeoff? Add me as a plus for the info boxes!
I'm still collecting data for take-off / landing with flaps, speeds etc; after we did all the work to modify the wing.
love these pop ups on screen to locate us not flying with you sorry
I'm not a huge fan of the ATC displays. I find it makes me listen less closely than I'd like because I'm multitasking.
do you speak french?
Not well enough to carry out a radio conversation with other pilots or ATC - but well enough that I can tell if they are going to be a conflict.
if my math is correct, you are getting just under 16 MPG. i just find that interesting . correct me if my math is wrong
Is Glen a nepo baby with an own island? Hahah!
