    The wildest thing that people don't talk about is how good Francis' chin is. He has copped shin bones to the head from multiple huge heavyweights, and still walked forward. He also did a great job going the distance with Ciryl Gane and Stipe Miocic, even after all the damage he sustained.
    I personally think they're relative, but I'd lean towards the person who has an entire career only focused on punching. However, that KO of Jairzinho Rozenstruik was scary. He did it with the end of a weak shot that he was not even stepping into.

    • @davidjohnston4345
      @davidjohnston4345 Рік тому +5

      Joyce uses momentum/inertia to pummel his opponents. It's the effort that he puts in after the punch has already landed. The force would be nearly the same if he fired his punches more quickly from the same distance. But it would be more exhausting. If you could say guys like wilder have a bazooka on their shoulders. Guys like Joyce and ngannu are swinging sledgehammers.

    What’s a huge problem with using just mass and acceleration is that a punch is a very complicated body movement. A poor flicky jab may be much faster than a cross, however, a cross has more of the body’s mass and muscle movement which results in more force.

  • @Fk8td
    @Fk8td Рік тому +183

    Precision and snap can also add to knock outs. Greater force doesn’t mean ko. A huge amount of power, but a real slow punch might not knock you out where as a little less force and a lot more speed snapping your head back could easily knock you out.
    I think a great example of this is that Errol Spence Junior has more thudding power that breaks bones whereas Terence Crawford has more snapping power that knocks people out.

    you should be measuring momentum to determine who hits harder. It doesn't matter if your punch is accellerating when it makes contact, it matters how much velocity it has. The momentum is converted to force as its momentum changes over time (decelerates) when hitting the target and this is the force that actually matters

    I love this style video! my only challenge would be 6:03 wilder isn't cutting weight, right? I would assume he's comfortably gaining mass for that fight. francis himself says he walks around just about 300 pounds. I would image human punch force calculator would yield closer to 11,000N impact force for his natural weight. I'd also argue when you have more striking options such as your 8 limbs vs simply your punches like boxing, damage & devastation is greater when inflicted on an opponent who is less likely to be able to predict what's coming.

  • @its_hokori
    @its_hokori Рік тому +9

    i would like to clarify something, someone who is lighter can utilize more mass in their punch, that is the difference between a snapping arm punch vs sitting on a punch. When you sit on a punch you incorporate your mass from your feet through your hips to your shoulder and ultimately your fist. an arm punch on the other hand primarily gets it's "mass" from the arm

    • @its_hokori
      @its_hokori Рік тому +1

      also, there is no way that the entirety of someone's mass can be delivered in a punch. That 10795 newtons that was calculated would be if deontay's whole body was rocketed to his opponent with the fist surface area. The delivery time portion of the way you calculated may be incorrect.
    The calculator used is basing it's calculations of and idea called "Impulses". The delivery time or ∆t(change of time from an initial to final position) is the amount of time that impulse had influence on the object it struck. So a shorter delivery time would mean that the punch was probably retracted faster then a longer delivery time which would mean the punch was likely thrown in a way where i would lead through. Same concept you see when comparing tkd kicks to Muay Thai kicks. Muay Thai tends to "lead through" with their kicks over tkd which focuses less of that. This decreases the overall power for tkd. So instead of looking at the time it took for the punch to land instead see how long the punch sorta stayed on their face before leaving it as the force is more of an impulse rather then a instantaneously applied force. Also to calculate the velocity remember that velocity=Distance/time. Since we know the fighters reach in centimeters we can do the D(fighters reach)/t(time it takes until strike lands) to get a much more accurate velocity.
    This is still not perfect at the fighters have a slightly bent elbow which makes it more difficult to know the length and distance they covered. (Although if you do know the angle they bent their arm you might be able to determine that. But i doubt it matter much.
    Shouldn't be taken that seriously anyways so it isn't a big deal.

    Im going to add something here to the force equation. Mass isnt the mass you weigh on the scale. Its the amount of mass that gets transfered into the punch. For example, an arm punch has less mass behind it in motion than a full body perfect technique punch.
    Basically, technique changes the mass factor in the equation. In that sense, id say Eddie Hall could potentially hit harder than ngannou, if he was given ngannous technique.

    delivery time will always be higher in mma because they dont fight in as close of a range as in boxing. thats why your result implies wilder hits harder despite of his lower weight. i personally think ngannou hits harder by the eye test, but wilders blows are more devistating, because he knows to deliver punches in the correct place, both timing wise and postional. a blow is more devistating when a oponent leans towards you in the moment of the punch. thats what boxers know perfectly to use to their advantage, while mma fighters have to worry about all kinds of other stuff like takedowns and kicks.

Gotta remember that Francis is (or was idk what he wants to do for now) a mma fighter so he has to have more muscle on his legs and other places making him heavier. My main argument would be that Francis fights at most 5 rounds and those rounds aren’t just straight punches to the face so the data for hard punches is much less. Wilder on the other hand fights at most 12 rounds, and after a knockdown there’s a count to 10. Therefore the opponent has more chances to get hit

      They do... for numerous reasons.. to measure just pure force (not for per inch) it is probably possible to hit harder with 10oz gloves because more mass at the end of arm.. but.. if we talk about power to knock somebody out, the padding make big differenc because it highly reduces the final twitch to brain and it is much more difficult to knock somebody out with 10oz gloves than 4oz ones.. Id does not mean smaller gloves are healthier tho, because 400 reduced shockwaves are worse for brain health than 3 big ones.. For that reason, Wilder is much more impressive with his ko power than ngannou.. Ngannou is heavier slower puncher who I think can produce more "force" behind his punch.. But Wilder can produce quicker and more lethal punch imo.

    If I HAD to choose between taking a single punch from Deontay or Francis (I wouldn't want to get hit by either of them), I would easily make up my mind and go with Francis. I see a different type of power with Deontay, almost like a laser guided missile. 1 straight punch, lights out, knocked out cold. Francis seems to generate a more "slugging" style of power, like a sledgehammer. Big, wide, heavy punches, but are generally a bit slower. I grew up watching many, many big punchers, even guys from before my time like Shavers and Foreman (who were both legit contenders for hardest punchers of all time) and I still haven't seen anyone with the same one punch power as Wilder. It's actually scary that someone can hit that hard.

      Louis and Liston, I am old enough for Liston, would also be contenders. Louis because his body geometry and mechanics were so perfect, with great hand speed. Liston because his hands were sledgehammers, they were so freakishly thick and big. Oddly Marciano, could hit incredibly hard too, tiny, but great body geometry and body momentum.

    There's not only force to punches, there's kinetic energy as well. It's defined as (mass x speed^2)/2. I would say force is more important in the follow through of the punch while the kinetic energy is more important in the initial impact.

    Nice video and my opinion is that Wilder hits harder.
    He is so slender and actually relatively close to the CW weight limit at most of his weigh-ins, so it's truly god gifted that he can hit so damn hard.
    Francis might also be around 40-50 lbs heavier than Wilder at walkaround weight.

  • @dominicgiglio-tos5982

    Wilder clearly hits harder. As for the math I saw two big issues, first, delivery time for impact for is how long the objects are in contact, not how long it takes the punch to reach the person. Second, you can't assume their mass in the equation is their weight. Technique is a heavy part of the total mass in a strike. That's why "arm punches" are a thing. As are gazelle hooks and such. The amount of mass in each punch will be variable. I certainly appreciate the work though!

    It seems that that you misunderstood Newtown's second law F=ma. The force F acts on an object with the mass m that experiences an acceleration a, the object here is the opponents head, presumably. But it makes no sense to separate the head from the rest of the body. The more practical approach would be to measure mometum mv - mass times velocity - which is conserved like the kinetic energy. Not the acceleration but the end velocity at impact is important to the power of a punch, mechanically speaking. The acceleration is what makes it difficult for the opponent to evade the punch.

      I wouldn't exagerate it to this extent. Wilder's punching power is nonsensical, and so is Francis's. The main difference between the tow is how physically stronger Ngannou is and also how incredibly strong his chin and overall ability to take blows is. No one has ever seen him hurt, not even when he was battered by Miocic for 5 rounds. He's probably the strongest fighter in the world right now.

    The use of physics during this video was a little bit mistaken. For example using body mass in the M*A=F. The best way to model a punch would be by using the conservation of linear momentum. This would mean that the factors to consider are the speed of the hand at the moment of impact and the weight of the hand (+ maybe the forearm). You multiply said mass* speed of the hand and assuming that the collision is the same, you can estimate the power of the punch (momentum transfered from the hand to the head)

    Form isn’t only important to accelerate… it’s important if you wanna leverage your weight. Weight on its own does nothing, probably even hinder you. When it comes to knockouts you have to factor in accuracy, if it was expected/did the person know it was coming, of course the gloves and everything in between. It definitely is way more than just mass, acceleration and stuff xD.

  • @rokmin8550
    @rokmin8550 7 місяців тому +1

    in my physics class one of my projects was measuring punching power, which turned out to be a lot trickier than I imagined. We all know force = mass x acceleration and with a machine that works fine but we also have "point of impact" to deal with. Try this yourself, throw your hardest punch at a bag (no people please lol) and just as you make impact, relax your arm. You have speed, you have weight, but almost no force will reach the bag as a lot of it will be dissipated into your relaxed arm when you make contact. Punches are different too, compare the heavy handed George Foreman in his prime compared to Earnie Shavers. Most have said Shavers had the greater 1 punch power, but did he? None of those fighters were around for Foreman Frazier 1. What do I think? I hate to sound like a cop out but Wilder/Ngannou could go either way. Wilder is faster so he has acceleration on his side, Ngannou is quite a bit heavier and knows how to punch so he has mass on his side. Take your choice. If I was hard pressed I'd probably go with Ngannou on a stationary target (a moving target is a whole different thing as it would favor a faster puncher like Wilder) but hey, I could be wrong too, its just a guess.
