  • Driving Catskill scenic byway NY 23A from 9W Catskill village to west.
The Catskill Mountains, also known as the Catskills, are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains, located in southeastern New York. As a cultural and geographic region, the Catskills are generally defined as those areas close to or within the borders of the Catskill Park, a 700,000-acre (2,800 km2) forest preserve forever protected from many forms of development under New York state law.
Kaaterskill Falls is a two-stage waterfall on Spruce Creek in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, between the hamlets of Haines Falls and Palenville in Greene County.
New York State Route 23A (NY 23A) is an east-west state highway in Greene County, New York, in the United States. It serves as a 34.56-mile (55.62 km) alternate route of NY 23 through the northern Catskill Mountains. The route passes several of the Catskill High Peaks, including Hunter Mountain, before dropping into the Hudson Valley via Kaaterskill Clove and ending at an intersection with U.S. Route 9W (US 9W) in the village of Catskill. NY 23A was assigned in the mid-1920s and has not been changed since. A portion of the route through Kaaterskill Clove was closed for several months in 2006 after landslides triggered by heavy rains damaged the route.

Totally awesome. It has been many years since I have driven this road, but I still seem to remember every inch as if it were yesterday, it is that impressive. Such spectacular and uniquely beautiful views, impossible to forget. Thanks for this ride along.

Really nice. I miss upstate NY. My family use to vacation in Mountain Dale when I was young. Very relaxing video.

I grew up in Hunter. I have driven over that route many times . Now, living in NC for the last 15 years, I so enjoyed your video, it was like seeing home one more time.

Such a great road to drive down. Hairpin turns are scary, but you just have to heed the signs and slow down! I’ve driven up and down this road so many times going to my parents house that’s near Windham. Such a fun road to drive on. Not many roads near the area really compare. Always a blast!

I love this! My family and I will be taking this drive in August 2021 on our way to Massachusetts! I'm from Wisconsin where there are no mountains and have always wanted to go to the Catskills!

Route 30, 28, 214, and 23A are scenic drives in the Catskill. Don't miss the Kaaterskill Falls, only half mile hiking from 23A

I spent time as a kid (Mid 70's) in the Jewett - East Jewett area at some
old piece of property (Abandoned Artist Colony?) that I swear was extremely haunted.
I think the placed was managed by the Mead family. Does anyone know of that place or
have any details of the history of that area? I'm trying to document the places I lived in when I was a kid.
    Thanks!
