About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
I love how Munkustrap is the only responsible adult throughout the whole musical, how can you not love him

Munkustrap is the epitome of Tired Dad energy--constantly stressed out about something, but still loves his family and will gladly indulge them as long as they're not hurting anything.
Skimbleshanks runs the trains tho
His character is so friggin adorable the more I think abt it; I mean he’s a CAT that just likes to hang around the train station, take naps and bother the people that work there that eventually became the station’s mascot because who doesn’t love a cat which, for some reason decided to live in libraries post offices or train stations etc and force the employees to adopt it. And in his small head he’s thinking “These humans are HELPLESS without me! I’m SUPER important! They NEED me!” 😂
I mean, isn't that basically Tama's story? Anyway, if I were heading an adaptation of Cats, I'd basically make Skimble an ode to Tama
I imagine the same of gus. He's just an old cat that sleeps at the theater's door, but in his mind he's a great actor.
I love 𝚑𝚒𝚜 voice tho and his song is so great
I especially love how the first few lines of the song imply that he's interpreted the humans' willingness to delay the train slightly to make sure that their pet cat is on board as a sign that the train PHYSICALLY CAN'T START without him.
It… kinda makes me wonder what he thinks they're all doing while he's at the Jellicle Ball. Does he assume they've all been given the day off till he comes back?

Yes and Old Deuteronomy seems so happy to be, in a way, reliving his kittenhood. I am doing a production of Cats at my Musical Theatre class, and I was chosen to be Munkustrap, and I can't be happier to have such a heartwarming cat part. ❤

I find this whole musical to be very confusing but what i do know is I'd die for Skimbleshanks
To sum it up, a bunch of cats are introducing themselves at a ball where at the end of it, their leader picks a cat to sacrifice and be reborn. I'm aware that doesn't make any sense, but that's virtually the entire plot, minus a subplot where a mystery cat steals the leader. I can't spell any of their names so I don't bother

There's nothing like a charming musical about cars sacrificing each other
It's actually an extremely simple story about a cult of CATS where one of the CATS are chosen to be sacrificed once a year so they may be reborn into a new life. Each CAT performs before the leader so in hopes that they may be chosen.
They were introducing theirselfs to be choosen to go for their new life. Only one cat would be able to do that
I didn't interpret it to be every cat wanting to be sacrificed that night. The point of each song focused on an individual is to celebrate the individuality and uniqueness of all Jellicle cats. Then Old Deuteronomy decides based on his experience who it should be.

Michael definitely really loved this musical - I think he stayed with it for five years.
One of the neat things about this movie is, if you watch Munkustrap in any song he's not featured in, the performer's CLEARLY having a blast.

Yup. That's what I love so much about this version that I tried to do with the new movie. I caught a couple things here and there that made me snicker, but generally with the new movie, not many of the background cats were doing much. If they were, it was hard to focus on because there was just so much crap going on.
Yeah I always like looking out for mungojerrie and in other songs I always look out for skimbleshanks lol
After noticing it once, I cannot stop cracking up at how when everyone else is kind of doing a coreography when the train breaks, meanwhile Coricopat is literally going "Oh shoot, holy shi-!" in the background with his train wheel...

So after watching this all, the cats with song about them are cats who are nominated to be reborn, Shimbleshanks just seems to LOVE his life, such a cool lazy dude, people need to be more like him
Huh, I’ve been a fan of this musical for over 20 years and I never thought about it like that. That’s kind of cool.
I kinda imagine it like most of these cats are technically in the running, but everyone assumes it’s gonna be Gus, so the rest of the songs are just to flex.
I've always thought of it as most just showing off and having fun while there are only a small number of actual nominations that are primarily sung by someone else; Jennyanydots, Bustopher Jones, and Gus. Then Grizabella sings her own song in the end.
All the other songs are either explanations about the Jellicles or spectacle show off-y songs. c:

The hilarity of the lyrics to this song definitely land better in this performance, but I actually liked the tap dance/railroad style of the movie version.
Skimbleshanks was one of the only things the movie did well
I have to agree. That tap dance scene was the best thing to come from that film in my opinion
That film did the Correct Way of adapting a stage song for film. Making it it's own, while still being distinctly related to the original
The 2019 Skimbleshanks is the only number to capture the original spirit of the stage show, which is a shame because it gives us a glimpse of what could have been if more care was given to the movie, especially in the hands of a more competent director.
Its mainly because its done by professional dancers, listening to the beat as they sing. For most of the songs, the producers just said "sing it how you want and we'll make the orchestra composed around it" which is terrible for a dance production lmao
But because this song has such an irregular beat, and they wanted tap dancing, they had to make everyone sing on beat.

I find this production so interesting because the actors are all pulled from different shows that playedat different times over the years so they are all used to the way that the production was put on when they were in it.
For example, usually Mistoffelees is the headlight of the train, but I noticed that Tumblebrutus is the headlight, Im going out on a limb here and guessing that its because the actor, Fergus logan, usually played Mistoffelees and was literally only Tumblebrutus during this recording.
I like that every cat has a name but you don’t learn it only the ones they sing about are thought to you

When I was at Drama School I used to have to catch a train into the city and at one of the stations there was a visiting cat. I asked about him and apparently he had a loving home, well cared for and got fed, he just liked hanging out at the station! I asked his name and the irony, Gis (pun name for give us a kiss!) I started laughing while the staff looked bemused. I said “you obviously aren’t aware of Cats The Musical. There’s a cat call Gus.”
Always thought this was one of the most powerful and strongest finishes to an ALW song.

where is jellyorum?
That role is more of a singing one, so Sarah Jane Tanner was not in this segment, or at least not with the rest of the dancing cast. She DOES do some dancing in the gumby cat part, but that dancing is easy compared to Jellicle Ball (where she's always at the back and can duck offstage at the more complicated parts).
Jellylorum was behind Victoria working the piston on the right side of the train. Her expression is super cute.
What kills me is that the umbrella part of the train at the beginning is just a little bit crooked!

the 2019 version of this song is epic. It is really the one thing they didn't screw up. I loved the tap dancing!
@@pazuzu126 mungojerrie and rumpleteazer was also a pretty good scene if not for the dancing on the staircase scene with the terrible cgi
phujiapples I agree, that was probably the second best scene in the film. The slower jazzy version worked very well and you could still appreciate the choreography. The dancers all did a good job, it was just awkward with the not so good cgi. Having them trash that house was fun too, it fit their personalities well
