Drums before laying a vinyl type of sample definitely help with the groove. You'll program the sample chops different than you would if you didn't do the drums first in my experience
You’re right, I also try to lay down a more unorthodox drum pattern at first, even if I alter it later, I’ve learned that it helps you discover more unique sample patterns and overall can really diversify the sound of your beat
I normally chop to the metronome. I've done both, but I prefer chopping to the metronome more. I like to see how the chop influences my drums. Actually, I chop the verse beat to the metronome but a lot of times, I chop the chorus to the drum pattern I've made. I recorded a song called "Beauty" which explains my beat making process.
@@NavieD naw how 9th Wonder remixed Nas God's Son album and redid all the beats and the verses fit wonderfully. I thought that was how he got noticed before he blew up with Little Brother

holy shiiiiit game changer!! Listening to chords, and the bass parts over listening for the "cool" stuff!! thank you so much bro. wouldve never thought of it that way but it makes so much sense.
I have learned so much from your videos in such a short time, not only technically but how to expand my mind towards sounds selection and to think outside the box while producing. Thank you sir.
Also he had a very unique way he brought his drums in too during the beginning of his beats. Its like they would drop in the middle of a chop. It was weird
Can you do Stoupe, the Enemy of Mankind of Jedi Mind Tricks. I like the way he samples classical music. Also, instrumentals on Violent By Design are so good.
~Awesome the way the boom bap video is recommended right at the end is perfect timing great lead // im on a studying binge right now again and enjoying it 🌞✌thanks for thee awesome content !!!
I like your tutorials and I'm enjoying the content, can I suggest something. After each episode of tips and tricks from a certain producer, can we have a beatmaking tutorial where you making a beat in that style or breaking the indeapth. Also can we have a breakdown of how you made some of your beats that were used by artists, like my favorite. Add-2 - Reset which is the reason I'm here. Hope you understand my poor English
Hey Navie! Dope vid as always. Are you going to make a video on three six mafia type production like you mentioned some time before? Tbh I’m really interested in this style
Great video. I'm going to suggest doing a study of Futurewave. He's a current innovator that inspires me in the lab. Great releases with top quality mcs. Toronto based.
As far as pitching, I've found the orchestral tuning philosophy of the overtones being slightly sharper with intonation than the fundamental, bass is a good study. It works well. The fundamental or bass/sub sharper than the overtone isn't so pleasant. Orchestras will ibtonate parts of each section differently for a wider harmonic richness. Occasionally, I will pitch the bass - 3/-7cts flatter for the effect.
9th doesn’t lay his drums before his samples. He’s said this before in a different video/interview. His Rhythm Roulette was edited and if you look closely, you can tell they’re going back and forth between cut scenes.
Good stuff!! How do you make a sample sound full and rich? I mean, I cut the lows on an EQer, compress it, and sometimes throw a little saturation and reverb, etc. But it still comes out sounding kinda dry... am I missing something? Or is it just my ear being too picky? Cheers, Navie!!
@@NavieD I just recently started putting soft clipper on my sessions and it helped some. lol and hmm, I might be cutting too much lows, usually around 240 ish, maybe? Depends on the sample. Just dont want a bunch of bass and drums coming thru lol ill mess around tho/ Helpful advice, per usual! Thanks a bunch.
Just Blaze Kanye West Tyler The Creator Mike Dean Eric These are producers who I think are a bit of a challenge when it comes to how they approach their music but I'd love to see videos about their techniques Great video as always Navie👍🏾
me, like: "nice some tips i can easily apply to sound better. 2 clicks and its perfect." then navie: "well you can always throughly analyze the whole song you're sampling for chops! right? now we need some eq, and good ears or wave candy"
your studies of each of these producer's styles are veryyyy comprehensive!
Thanks Rek! I try my best to understand what producers are doing

@@boog7429 it could just be a drum break/loop whether you end up keeping it or not the rhythm just makes you lau the chops better
Yeah it's true. You try to tailor the sample to the drums rather than the drums to the sample

Yes, I say the worth 'aesthetic' a million times in this video once again.
Let me know who else you'd like to see covered in this series!
It's a great artistic world for me it means achieving a certain vibe or artstyle which music is anyway
cover madlibbbbb
It would be really nice to have some tips about where to find samples like this.
you should cover just blaze
Hitboy or metro boomin
The first time I saw 9th Wonders Rhythm Roulette I fell in love with sampling.
Hahah so many people say they love that Rhythm Roulette
@@NavieD most struggled with making one... He made three and recorded a vocalist lol. 9th is the sample goat
I can't belive you're the one who made my friend Pedro's ost, i like this game so much and it has amazing osts
Thank you man, I am happy you liked the music from that game! Feels like so long ago that I made it
Thank you! The tip about finding and adding parts that have the same chord/base note on top of the base groove was golden!
I hope it helps Joni!
let's talk about the 10th wonder: every week's top class Hip Hop Producing videos by Navie 👍
Hahah u real silly Alex
9th wonder is the exact producer that I needed to study more
Appreciate you Nav 💪🏽
No problem! I hope this video helped my friend
The way he got noticed as a producer was unique too. Never seen anyone else really pull off his humble beginning.

Suscribe to your channel is the best thing I have did in this years, man.
I love how you put tags to other videos you made. Such a great marketing strategy. Taking notes. haha
Just in time for a day sesh. Thanks sensei
it would be nice some drum kits for each artist u explain to catch his vibe
Hold up fam tired of your videos… your the best tutor on this platform I have found for beats!
Hey navie , i think at the end of the video you should play the whole final product of the produced beat
I have tried that, but unfortunately it completely tanks the viewer retention statistic, and in turn, hurts the videos chances of spreading
You're a so good in analyzing music, very helpful! And can you please do a video on Havoc's kicks and bass stuff?
I briefly covered Mobb Deep style beats two weeks ago, I may do one more in-depth, not too sure
Hey could you check out OZ's production style? I always wanted to learn how to make sounds that sounded like his.
Ah, I feel like every other producer video I see is about OZ/Cubeatz
You beautiful man. I'm glad to see the number of subs keeps rising! Love 9th. Too bad you didn't bust out the Maschine for full 9th Wonder effect!
