How to survive the first night in Minecraft without being killed by mobs

How to survive the first night in Minecraft in survival mode.
I started a new world in survival mode, without no cheats or bonus chest available.
First I started chopping some wood, then I made the first crafting table, them a wooden pickaxe. After this I went underground to look for some iron. If caves are nearby you can look inside for iron and coal but it's dangerous because mobs can spawn in very dark areas.
