LYRICS
She's like the swallow that flies so high
She's like the river that never runs dry,
She's like the sunshine on the lee shore.
I love my love and she'll love no more.
Twas out in the garden this fair maid did go,
A picking the beautiful prim-e-rose;
The more she plucked the more she pulled
Until she got her a-pr-on full.
Twas out of those roses she made a bed,
A stony pillow for her head.
She laid her down, no word she spoke
Until this fair maid's heart was broke.
She's like the swallow that flies so high
She's like the river that never runs dry,
She's like the sunshine on the lee shore.
She lost her love and she'll love no more.
I haven't heard this or sang this in so many years love this brings back so much memories

We played this song in music class and we had no idea back then how this song and those words had permeated to many countries and many cultures. We were a class in Newfoundland, playing a Newfoundland fold song.....that’s about all we thought back then. Now, 25 years later, I am so proud that this “little folk song” from a “little unknown place” is so much more than just a song we thought was simply another local piece in our music book. Such a brilliant piece of music. Without even hearing the words, the audience immediately feels the deep sadness and dread. With the words, the anguish of this poor young woman is almost unbearable. Even after hearing the song over decades, the heartache still gets me and leaves me a mess...lol. I wish I could give the young woman in this song a huge hug. It sounds like she needs one from someone, anyone.
The tune is known all over Europe under many different disguises. It has haunted my whole life!
I’m from Canada too but we played this in music class in Ontario. It was simply called “A Newfoundland Folk Song” the teacher did tell us the premise about them meeting, sleeping together and him being like “no no I just wanted a good time” I listened to other versions like the one from Cara Dillon, and other bands that played it.
I was in grade 9(14 at the time, and 29 now). This is the first time I realized she killed herself.
She belts it out like it’s a wedding and not a dirge.

Lyrics
She's like the swallow that flies so high
She's like the river that never runs dry,
She's like the sunshine on the lee shore.
I love my love and she'll love no more.
Twas out in the garden this fair maid did go,
A picking the beautiful prim-e-rose;
Tis out in the meadow this fair maid did go
Picking the lovely primrose
The more she plucked the more she pulled
Until she's got her apron full
She climbed on yonder hill above
To give a rose unto her love
She gave him one, she gave him three
She gave her heart for company
And as they sat on yonder hill
His heart grew hard, so harder still
He has two hearts instead of one
She says, young man what have you done
How foolish, foolish you must be
To think I loved no one but thee
This world's not made for one alone
I take delight in everyone
Recorded at St. John's United Church, Oakville May 16, 2013 as part of the Arthouse Festival Series.
NO WORDS. Couldn't have done more justice to this song. respect to the whole team and esp the arranger
gorgeous folk song that frankly doens't need any distraction from silly dancing...what a really stupid idea..the focus should all be on the song and the beautiful singing
