When I retired.. all my excuses for not going to the gym disappeared. 8 years later Monday to Friday, each morning gym classes. Sets a roster . Gives me a reason to get out of bed. Starts my Day
Financial security pales in priority to one's health. Purpose comes next.
My inlaws traveled a lot. We went with them occasionally. They worked their entire lives and deserved to do what they wanted. We told them to spend every penny and we don't need any inheritance. Have fun! And they did.
Health should always be No 1. No amount of wealth can replace getting heart disease or cancer.
But you need the wealth to pay for it. MIL with stroke and cancer Eliquis $730mo AFTER insurance, $2100 without. Ibrance $14Kmo. The commercials don't mention that. Awaiting determination if Medicare PDP will cover this speciality cancer drug.
The title is “5 things you care about most”. No amount of wealth is going to make you happy if you don’t have your health.
for us
1) Health
2) the grandchildren
3) having our kids near
4) maintaining the house, yard and cars
5) cheap restaurants LOL
The thing I think about most is helping my children.
“Time above ground” LOL
I must say, Geoff, your screen acting prowess has progressed by leaps and bounds. Your reaction to the bell toll was MASTERFUL, and worthy of Hitchcock. Great video. I’m 61. No children. Retired at 59. To quote a film title,
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
lol
I'm truly sorry you don't have children. I'm also 61 and retired at 58 but could not imagine life without children. It's the young people in our life that give me and my wife the most joy. I don't understand why you would think no children is a positive thing?
Everything is more important than money when you have plenty of it.
This list is spot on! Also - do a list of things retirees care about LEAST, For instance, my bug to travel is somewhat motivated by my dislike for home improvement. Thus, it’s difficult to do lawn care and home improvement when you’re sitting in an RV at (insert your national/state park here).
Geoff I can speak from experience taking 2yrs from working FT to be my Mom's caregiver and taking $$ out of 401K to be able to pay my bills. Taught me what retirement would be like on fixed income and your video's. The time spent with my Mom Money can't buy!
The classic corvette was on my list so I went and bought one. I waited 50 years and I love driving it.
I do not get the "TRAVEL" thing with people. Think about it, our whole careers we Commuted to work, traveled for work, etc... I just want to sit in my beautiful backyard with my Wife and Dogs and relax. Go for a morning hike, afternoon under the tree nap and then cook on our firepit or head to one of our local awesome Taverns. We are not into taking our shoes off at airport, wait 6 hours in said airport for delayed flight, flying to a country that hates Americans. We do like road trips within our great country.
We are just the opposite. We have already visited 5 continents and want to visit more places. We took our kids when they were young, and the travel helped them develop a world view.
@@JBoy340a Don't talk others into it. The lines will be longer and places more crowded.
We love to travel and are not retired yet. Yes there are hassles but going and seeing the world and how different cultures lives is fascinating. We only get to do one big trip a year but it refreshes us for the year. We have taken our two teenage kids and want to show them everything we can before they fly off on their own lives. I am glad you are content in your own home. Everyone is different
Retirement is about doing what you enjoy. Early in retirement my wife and I went on some great trips. Now we are settling down and enjoying a slower pace. That mix is suiting us.
health is money, and health is more than money, too.
Great, as always. Thanks. :)
Thank you ! I am glad I found your channel!
Great video. Always packed with good info….thank you!
First things first ! Thumbs Up !
Thanks, Jeff!
I travelled throughout my work life - nearly completed my whole travel bucket list. I felt that doing it while I was young was better.
For me; you were spot on at ~4 min mark. The other points were very good and accurate as well.
Holy Schmidt, this is good info
This video is the right path for your program; build on it😇
The cost of getting ill is more than any American can afford right now. Or most Americans anyway. All older people need medical care, all humans get sick. So I’d guess that retirees are all holding onto every dollar that they can, so as to be able to pay some part of the upcoming medical bills, to possibly try to save their own lives.
It could be worse, in other countries retirees don’t worry about the cost of major procedures, they worry about the access.
Once on Medicare, care is pretty good, and costs are reasonable if you pick the right plans and coverage.
Many retirees have Medicare which handles a lot of medical bills.
My Medicare costs me nothing and provides darn good coverage. I’m planning vacations, not medical visits.
@@randolphh8005my automatic deduction of what $170 or so takes care of 90% of costs. Pharmacy is extra.
Health and family!
Good list. Personally, continuous learning is a priority, after health and financial security. It ties into self-discovery, but I don't think it's quite the same. This is why I retired last year. Traveling, experiencing new things, meeting new people, developing new perspectives and constantly widening my mind is far more fulfilling than stagnating in the corporate world, regardless of the constantly evolving "challenges" that life can present.
I spent the last 20 years of my career traveling two, occasionally, three times a month. If I never see a middle-seat again, it will be too soon.
A lot of wisdom here.
There's no breathing life back into my old relationship 😮
Well done, as always Appreciate the confirmation. I understand my wants for the future, have invested well, and kept the "outgo" minimal. Be well.
I could see a retiree visiting every location of something they are interested in for travel just to have a goal.. every Home Depot, Chick fila, Kroger etc...just to give them a reason to see different cities.
I am sure there are other reasons to see different cities than fast food outlets. Goodness.
@@leisure057blank3 you see people go on quests to visit every baseball stadium in the US, Football etc. and there have been a few people treking to every starbucks in the US
My parents are in their 90s. Since they can both still drive but not walk much, they enjoy driving to and visiting covered bridges in their state and neighboring states. Passports have long expired, but they still enjoy exploring as they are able.
@@hollynauss6359 that is very neat. I would try and do that, and I would love to visit every state, but not to compare chic fil as. Though that is just me. I just think people could find many more reasons than fast food to inspire their travels.
@@leisure057blank3 I know years ago Harley Davidson ran some kind of contest for riders to visit every HD dealer ship in the country...some people visit all the confederate monuments others seek out zoos using reciprical memberships to get in for free or 1/2 off in far flung towns there are folks try to find "dead" malls before they finally all close and some people still go to things called " museums" if you can imagine that.
Health and Financial security. I’ll be soon entering retirement and the last 5 years have been a constant March to see the doctor. This from a person who saw the doctor 3 times until around 55.
If you don’t have some level of Financial Security it makes health problematic. The stress worrying will drive you to the grave just as easy as anything.
For me local ( within the US) is fine. Oversea’s not so much - was fortunate during my working life to travel overseas and I’ve seen enough for me.
Family is extremely important but, I don’t want to be constantly at my kids door. I want them to do what they feel best for them and I’ll be there in the background helping where I can and being there when I need to be either for them or me.
Space Mountain interesting that's what my Nick Name is
I love Mr. toads wild ride that was my favorite. But it died 30 years ago.
My friend and I love that ride and they have it at Disneyland in Anaheim.
I hate traveling….
I really wish someone would mention the dreaded Safe Harbor IRA.
Wouldn’t have to worry about money.
This early retiree can attest most travel is overpriced and overrated.
I notice that at the end of this video you started to slur your words a bit. I have had a severe speech impediment myself, so I am acutely aware of small changes. The film The King’s Speech was pretty much my situation.
Perhaps a topic you might explore could be “Little Things That Could Mean a Lot”.
We both enjoy your videos.
Much of what you say is very relevant to Australian retirees, despite the major differences in our societies.
I'd love to be with my family- if any of them were still talking to me 😯
😂
My husband and I both traveled a lot as kids and even lived overseas, so we have zero desire to travel any more. I’d rather go to the dentist.
I have yet to hear you say something that made no sense! Thank you
we all have our demons and regrets the tragedy lies if we never learn from them and continue to repeat them.
For us it's can you pretend your asleep so the other one gets up an puts the kettle on , is the bathroom busy , can you put off any shopping until tommorow , the more recycle bags you purchase the more you have to carry out to the road , is there anyway I can get out of doing something , what are we eating tonight an you have to make it if it's hard , what are we watching to fall asleep to on netflix , humm pretty much covers covers it 🙂 O chat with the kids somehow online tell them they are wonderful an hope they don't come over an wreck the order in dinner an a new netflix series 🙄
"Is there any way I can get out of doing something?" That's always really high on my list, especially after I've agreed to do that very thing.
I thought I would be a travel maniac in retirement. Now that I’m on the cusp, not so much. I like my own bed and all my toys around the house that I’ve accumulated. Living out of a wheelie to see paintings in European museums….eh, not that interested.
Your videos are very valuable and I appreciate them but they would be much easier to watch if you'd quit waving your hands around.
Geoff Schmidt has regret that he is no longer with Taylor Swift.
Woke Disney and air travel are not on the list for me.
I was hoping someone would agree with my opinion 👍 I rather mow grass!
Good. There are already too many people on flights and at amusement parks. Thanks for keeping the lines shorter.
I’m just doing my part in reducing climate change by not traveling. I’m sure the parks are solar powered.
Using John D. Rockefeller as an example for anything other than Satan is Abhorrent!!! Are You Serious???
Huh?
Really? The point was the money management skills being taught to the kids. That is what is to be taken away from the example.
Rockefeller taught his children how to look at money. That’s the point.
😂
