- I love technology and language learning! In this video, i look at today's AI and imagine the impact it will have on language learning in the future.
I tried out HeyGen to see what I would look and sound like speaking Tamil (and American English). It's a tool that can have a huge impact on confidence and accuracy in pronunciation. Now that it's possible to speak to ChatGPT, I had a chat in French, Spanish and Chinese and then asked it to teach me some Danish, Swahili, Xhose and Irish. This is just the beginning! One day, AI tools will be able to design the perfect language learning experience customised to individual learners.

I found this channel a while ago but only now am I interested in this- are you able to present the differences between traditional, non-RP accents in the south of England? They are very rare these days and I would like to see how they have been preserved and just to hear them because of their rarity. What I mean by this is the old Sussex, Surrey, Thames Valley, Hampshire, or really any individual county south of the midlands - accents which sound most like the West Country and East Anglia accents. If you are able to share any information about them I would appreciate it. I’ve only ever heard RP in my area even though a few generations ago I know that would not have been the case.
By the way, I’ve watched a handful of different videos from this channel now, and it’s incredible. I find your videos fascinating and always interesting. You present everything brilliantly and do it in good enough detail to understand the specific dialects and accents you are presenting.
I'm impressed, and a little scared, by how quickly these machine learning generative systems have improved! It's good to understand their limitations, too.
Dave - as ever, thanks for posting and an interesting perspective. Personal experience says that email translators, especially for the more common languages do a very reasonable job ... I don't speak anywhere near fluent Spanish and an Argentinian friend doesn't speak English/German - but we have a good level of email exchange and humour (though it was different when I went to Latvian for someone else! ;) That said, and including some of the difficulties you found here, I'm not sure how AI would/could interpret body language, irony/sarcasm, veiled threat, etc. - in conclusion, I think my thoughts are let's hope no politician intends using it shortly! 🤣
(HNY - and I'm about to look at your attached video next ... hope I haven't shot myself in the foot here! ... and I haven't, from the Highlands, 'bliadhna mhath ùr!' to all! 😃 )
I’ve seen Google translate go from producing incomprehensible gibberish to being consistently accurate when translating Chinese. That’s taken about ten years. You’re right that AI won’t be able to interpret paralinguistic features any time soon. That’s bound to lead to misunderstandings. As you say, let’s hope world leaders don’t rely on it.

Do you think that this may eventually minimise the need to learn languages, as these AI tools can translate in real-time?
At the pace we have seen AI progress, one might just be able to buy a Babel Fish in a few years
Feels like language learning might just become a hobby in the future
As I say near the end of the video, people will still find joy in leaning languages, and the tools will make the task easier. Also, in many cultures, learning another language is a source of prestige and a sign of education.

I think that French was a mid-channel accent, more Isle of Wight than Dunkirk. Incidentally, for me what is fascinating and extraordinary about ChatGPT, is that it has pretty much conquered speech using a gigantic neural net trained on massive input. This, to my mind, is strong evidence against Chomsky’s theories. It also argues against formal language learning, and in favour of massive exposure to the target language cf Stephen Krashen, with a bit of explanation thrown in.
Indeed. There was a bit of Canadian thrown in too. The ø in ‘je peux’ for example. I agree with what you say about Krashen and Chomsky, though that’s always been my intuition.

It wasn't terrible. I just thought it was funny that it had an English vibe to it. Do they start it training Germanic languages with an English base I wonder?
