Tone Talk: Classic Heavy Metal Tone & Settings

- Опубліковано 31 лип 2024
- Today we're taking it back to the 70s and early 80s, chasing that classic heavy metal tone!
As promised in the video, here are the amp settings and details:
Amp: EVH 5153 50 watt head, EL34 tubes
Cabinet: EVH 2x12 (matching)
Gain: 7
Bass: 4.5
Mids: 6.5
Treble: 6.5
Volume: 1.5
Presence: 6
OD: None
Noise Gate: None
Effects: Boss DD7 Digital Delay (just a little touch)
Post-Production: Compressor plugin/PreSonus Studio One
Guitar: LTD M-1000 Deluxe (late 2000 model)
I'd say this is anywhere from Black Sabbath to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden styles. Feel free to comment if you're thinking of some other bands from the classic metal era!
And even though I wasn't using 'classic' gear, I think we came pretty close to capturing that style of metal.
The song you heard, in the beginning, is 'The Epicist' from my first album, Apocalyptic Dreams.
Tone Talk is always a cool topic, so let me know if you guys would like more videos like this now and then!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

E-Standard (maybe Eb) tuning running through real tubes with stacked gain stages gave us some timeless tones come from that 80s Shrapnel Records era. Then there is still headroom for bass and drums to have their own voice. Bring it back!
That’s a solid point! Especially leaving room for tue bass and drums to carry the lower frequencies!
Thanks for sharing your typical settings for this amp Jason. I recently bought the same amp and cab and loving it!
It’s such a cool amp! I just got the. Blackstar HT Venue MK III: ua-cam.com/video/0makwiJmmGY/v-deo.htmlsi=iTUr7KZ_fYNAZ2uE
really good tone - and flawless playing ;-)
Dig the opening jam! I like checking out these tone videos. My settings are close to what yours. I dail in a bit of reverb, chorus and some delay. Sounds like a arena inside my small jam space/man cave. Keep it Metal!!!
Thank you! That song is called The Epicist from my first album Apocalyptic Dreams
this tone is simply sounding massive, great song too..very catchy
Thank you, Brother Faceless!
Great guitar tone! Very nice!
🙏🏻🤘
Love that tone!
🤘🤘🤘
Wow that EVH just sounds that good. All by its self. Amazing
It’s a solid amp and extremely versatile!
Fav metal guitar teacher by far
🙏 🤘
I injoy your videos good information thank you for all your work 👍
Thank you🤘
Early Sabbath and Priest used germanium treble boosters, like Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore and others.
🤘
Dude - try out a Mesa 2x12 man. They're making a compact 2x12 now but my favorite is the vertical 2x12. I run 2 in stereo with my Kemper through a Mesa Simul-Class 2:Ninety power amp. You can feel the thump in your chest. Excellent video as always dude! Keep doing the good stuff!!!!!!!!!!🤘😁🤘
Dude, that's exactly what I wanna do!! I bet this thing will sound awesome with the Mesa 212!
MUCH LOVE BRAAAAAA
🤘
Great! Thank you!
🙏🏻🤘
Hey Jason I get a massive metal tone threw an old peavy prowler 45 watt tube amp with an mxr fullbore pedal and a 10 band eq. Massive.
That sounds like a killer setup! 🤘
NICE... love it... Peavey... my classic 30 is a beast if pushed..but have to change speaker to Vintage 30 celestion..beast mode...
That V30 will sound awesome!
Awesome tone this exact is the tone im looking for also reminds me of manowar i love this classic metal tone i have not yet uploaded some metal guitar videos though Im very good at playing rhythm guitar love these videos u make though
Manowar has some cool stuff!
Great sounding tone bro.
I'll take it a step further than you did. "Even if you have the exact same rig that [insert-your-favorite-guitarist] uses, it still won't sound like [insert-your-favorite-guitarist] because it's YOU playing!
So many variables. Too many to count.
Did you ever get yourself a load box so you could use your beastly amp with cab IR's? If not, we need to start you up a fund drive! Get ya an Ox Box or a Torpedo. :-D
That’s so true!! And that’s why I encourage folks not to chase someone else’s tone!
I’ve thought of the Torpedo. But I’ll actually turn this thing up a bit when recording tracks…it produces a nice tone!
Hey Jason, I loved that song you were playing at the beginning of this video. Do you have the tabs for this or do you teach that anywhere ? That would be great for practicing. I was born in 64 and love 80s music. Can I get more of these songs on Patreon? Do you break them down and show us how to play them on Patreon if I subscribe. I love your videos and they have really helped my playing.
1st bro🔥
🤘
I've heard '80 Metal sound used lots of Reverb, I'm not sure if it true or just a rumuor. I thought you're going to tweak everything on 11 on the knob...Lol. Thanks for sharing, Jason \m/
Yeah, I think reverb and delay were used pretty heavily on the days! I like to use a little of one or the other for this style!
LOVE TONE N 80S STYLE
🙏🏻🤘
Running a portable metal rig, fender mustang micro with metal 2000 (evh) some reverb and a anygig age guitar. I recommend that to traveler metal lover
That Metal 2000 from the Mustang is a great tone!
In the video you were talking about the ‘Master of puppets tone’ you should do a video of dialing that tone in!
+1,000,000. I just wish I had the skill to play the riff from Mater of Puppets!
pls
Hmmm…let me see what I can come up with!
@@vaughanmacegan4012 that’s a challenge riff for sure!
@@JnJsw18 🤘
I think the song was as cool as the tone. The tone was spot on too!
PS,
Coffee on a tube amp to keep it warm is pretty metal. Just saying. LOL
Extremely great point dude!!
BUT, Beer on the amp is not good unless you like warm English beer, just sayin, pmsl
@@andrewking7919 lol yeah warm IPAs aren’t too desirable!!
Some of the best tone I`ve ever heard was from a tiny 9 volt powered portable amp with a belt clip. I like that nasty growl like Jimmy Page got in that slow breakdown in Carosalamra.
Don't think I've ever played through one of those!
@@jasonstallworth Sorry I misspelled it....*Caroselambra
KRAMMER GUITAR WITH EMG 81 AT BRIDGE FOR WARMER/ 2ND G JACKSON DINKY W SYMORE D FIRE WIRES
Solid guitar!
The fact that this amp is so expensive makes feel deeply sad. Aren't there any cheaper amp options?
Here are some more affordable amps: ua-cam.com/video/6VqR2T6OzUA/v-deo.html
I just got a tonex pedal, has good Sims. Pretty cheap. Really enjoying it through headphones for bedroom jamming when wife's asleep and thrugh my 8" monitors when she's not., there's plenty if good options out there, tube are awesome, but tech has come a loooong way.
TONE I CHASED WERE EVH/RANDY/DOKKEN AT 53 YRS OLD COUPLE OF YEARS AHEAD OF U RACK DSP 256 THRU FENDER M-80 CLASSIC SET UP SAME BASS 1/2 MID 3 HIGHS MAX PRESONACE 7
🤘
You're not the only one loved those guitar players as well. Also had a Fender M-80 as well and around the same age.

I HAVE CANDLE WAX BONG WATER N BEER STAINS ON MY 80S RACK I GET IT
Nobody knows what the Mids do. I just stick it about halfway normally, might experiment with that
I think mids are just a preference in what you want as far as tone goes. But you also have to adjust to fit into the mix if you're recording with other instruments.
Have you done the c137 mod on the blue channel?
Nope, and I don't think I care to do that. I want that specific range of tones I'm getting from the blue channel, which is much different from the red
What is the exact model of this...I can't find this after a lot search
It's the Prestige RG1570, 2001 model, I believe
To me, the gold standard of classic metal guitar tone is Iron Maiden's tone on the Piece of Mind album. That tone is super present, but without being harsh at all. It has just right amount of top end swish, but only enough to give it a classy bite. The low end rumbles just a little, but it is only enough to create the impression of a large, loaded room, while still being super tight. But the real stand out about that tone is the midrange. It is thicker and more compact than anything I have ever heard (maybe Tony Iommi can rival that, but I've always found his tone too thick, to the point that it just overpowers everything else). To date, I have not heard anyone being able to recreate the Piece of Mind guitar tone. I, myself, have tried and tried, but never got close enough. It is not something that can be attained with just a Marshall and an SM57. The classic metal showcased in the video above is more of a hair metal, American tone, as opposed to the British midrange tone that I consider the quintessential classic metal guitar tone.
🙏 🤘
Agreed. Also helps that they had Martin Birch, a huge budget. In some interviews. Dave Murray said they recorded the amps "in a huge wooden room with a ton of mics". I'm sure that they had a ton of wild mics, room and ambiance (the tone almost sounds like it has verb or light chorus on it, though not as much as Somewhere In Time or Seventh Son"). We will never know exactly, so that's the magic!
why the vol is just 1.5 ? can it be cranked at that level ?
That volume is actually pretty loud in my small studio (10x11 room) and I'm able to capture a tone that I like at that volume with this particular amp
@@jasonstallworth hmm, my marshall DSL wont sound good and powerful enough with volume at least 3 :(
NOW SPARK AMP
Thanks for sharing your typical settings for this amp Jason. I recently bought the same amp and cab and loving it!
