Every now and then I think about how different their character designs look from the start to the end. Sophie, insecure and kept to herself, and Howl, a coward who hid behind his vanity. Then at the end, Sophie became confident in herself and Howl is no longer afraid to hide who he is and protect what he loves.
Watched it in theaters last night. One of the best Studio Ghibli films of all time. I love the love story here, and it's one that makes sense. Sophie doesn't believe she's pretty, when everyone else can see it. Whereas Howl creates a beautiful external persona in order to hide his pure disdain for himself. All of that glamor and power is just meant to hide the monster he's turned himself into. Sophie and Howl are pretty much just mirrored sides of the same coin, and it isn't until they both find each other and find love that both their curses are lifted. The cool part is, and I'm not sure anyone noticed it, but they found balance in both their beauties and faults. When Sophie finally admitted her love for Howl, her curse resolved in a kind of middle state, with Sophie remaining young and beautiful, while also having the silver hair of her older self. And after losing Calcifer, Howl got his heart back, but Cal came back and remained a part of his life. In a way, they came to find peace in themselves.
My husband and I definitely try to make it a tradition to see this in theaters every year since it falls on our birthdays (25th & 26th) One year we even dressed up!
The movie is critically underrated How did this get an 87% in rotten tomatoes?? It really deserves more praise and better reviews, because I don’t see anything wrong with this movie; I cried at the end because it was so cute❤

The wind rises….not all of them but my top faves.

It’s this exact bullshit toxic masculinity attitude that wears on men mentally. They’re not allowed to show weakness. Be a monolith of strength. It’s assurance that things will be okay. A lot of guys need this in their life in many aspects. Find a man in your life and tell him your there to help and it’ll be okay….you’ll be surprised how much it means to them. It’s this weight that leads to so much suicide in men.

I’ve been a die hard Ghibli fan since I cld remember….Howl’s moving castle was my all time fave movie frfr the story line is brilliant!! Made me cry tbh I love soppy love stories and especially if it’s a Ghibli love story.

This is such a wonderful video essay! You have a really interesting take on Howl and Sophie's relationship that I haven't quite seen in other videos. It also taught me a lesson or two about things, because I really resonate with Sophie on this one. She had always been my favorite Ghibli lead and I really like how you explained her character!
