Saw them do this live in 1974. They were the first act and Eagles were the second act. The Doobie Brothers were the headliners, but the crowd was already burned out when the Doobies got on stage because the first two acts were so good. And the tickets were $4.50. Good times in the 70s.

It was originally about a drug dealer that the band knew, but at their manager’s suggestion the band changed the lyrics to be about a reclusive girl. Mega hit of the 70’s, they have a pretty great and varied catalog. And the guitar is slide guitar, very vocal and expressive. Larry Lee on vocals and drums.

The top comment on UA-cam about this song, especially the live version from BBC, is "I thought it was a chick singing!" Drummer Larry Lee wrote and sang this, and he does have a high falsetto voice. He also wrote the more pop-oriented numbers, although he could write country-rock as well as his bandmates. OMD didn't have a lot of huge hits, but there are great songs of theirs to check out such as Country Girl, Beauty In The River, You Made It Right, Walkin' Down The Road and their big live favourite Chicken Train.

“Jackie Blue” is more of a rocker than the rest of the album which is very mellow, as if sitting by a campfire as they recorded “It’ll Shine When It Shines” in a barn in rural Missouri.

Jay & Amber, Lake Street Dive is a great multi-genre band since 2004! You’ll love their songs "Nobody's Stopping You Now", “You Go Down Smooth”, “Hypotheticals” and more!!!! The great voice of Rachael Price & talented musicians and harmonies!! They can all sing and 4 of 5 are songwriters!!! This US based band frequently tours in North America, Australia, and Europe. Time for an Indie Band!!
(Ozark Mountain - Jackie Blue, nice song, 2 hit wonder, "If You Wanna Get to Heaven")

So many great songs. You Go Down Smooth (Live at WFUV) and What I'm Doing Here (In One Complete Take) are at the top of my list. They do a lot of covers too and have fun with them. Check out Lola (The Bridge 909 in Studio) to see Bridget on fire on her stand up bass.

This was their biggest hit, and you are so correct in noticing the versatility in their styles of music. They have bluegrass/mountain with "Standing On the Rock", and can go deep Backcountry, swampy style with "E.E. Lawson". Both are great!.

Wow! It's been a long time since I've heard this song but this single was my first music purchase. I was just 13 and bought it with my babysitting money. I may have it still in a box I haven't opened in quite some time. The guitar solo was a stand out for sure and then just listening to the whole song now brought up a familiar feeling memory of another time, another world. Nice!

  • @MisterWondrous

This was one of their more poppy songs to make them some money, but they have some molasses-slow acoustic guitar on the front porch with your dog and friends songs like ""It Couldn't Be Better", "Lowlands", "You Made It Right" and the title cut "It'll Shine When It Shines". All on the same album even. I saw them in '74 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with ELP, Allman Brothers, PFM, some other bands and 250k fans. Sardine City.

Ozark Mountain Daredevils was the first band I ever saw in concert. I was accompanied by a friend who was quite good looking. To make a long story short, a band member spotted us dancing and invited her to join the band after the show. I was her ride so I found myself at the Ramada Inn in Grand Junction, Colorado, having drinks with some of band and watching SNL. Pretty sure it was 1976 or 1977. Apparently they asked my friend if she wanted to travel with them. She turned them down.

I think the key lyric in this song is
"She makes you think that her life is a drag:

I think it talks about the secret life of a quiet girl.
