    Outstanding! Superb watch worthy of such a fix. Amazing that you did such level of preparation over two months.
    I am sure the achievement outweighs all the frustration.
    Thanks for showing us this.

    It is amazing how you can bring something that would otherwise be trashed or neglected back to working order. There's not a lot of insightful videos out there for digital watch repair and you do a very good job in filling that void. I believe that those two frustrating months of repairing this watch have paid off for you, now that you learned something new, and also for your viewers, who may want to repair a complicated old LCD watch or even just a PCB. Keep up the amazing work and I'll trust that you'll hit 1k subs very soon and hit your next milestone shortly after.

    Late reply to a 4 yr old vid (excellent BTW). I did something very similar to this, maybe back in 2012 or so. The one additional check you could try to solve the remaining LCD segment issues, is to clean off the tiny contact spots between the LCD substrate and the zebra connector that presses on it. Use a toothpick with a tiny amount of alcohol on the tip, and carefully brush over the contact pads. It has certainly worked for me on many removable LCD panels. (Also, might I suggest investing in a trinocular scope, much easier to film and be able to study the subject in stereo vision !)

      After watching many of your videos (fortunately I still have plenty more to watch!) I figured out most of the problems are for corrosion by battery leak. So, last weekend I checked out most of my watches to replace dead batteries or just take them out until I by a replacement.

    In order to make sure the conduction, the glue did you use is a kind of conductor material?

      Have you watched the video?

    • @mariom308
      @mariom308 5 років тому

      @@VintageDigitalWatches Yes, you talk about a kind of "wire glue". But I would like to know a little more about the properties of that material... So it conducts electricity? Thinking about an electronic repair, the word "glue" causes some confusion to me about its final properties...

    • @VintageDigitalWatches
      @VintageDigitalWatches  5 років тому

      @@mariom308 Hi, I use the term wire glue because that is the commercial term for it so people know how to find it if they do a search on eBay. It is electrically conductive because it has to pass electrical signals. For detailed properties you would have to look up the Material Data Sheet for one of these products to get more insight.

    I've been wondering about this kind of fix for some time now. But what I'm really wondering is if there is a coating you can apply to those ICs that don't have it applied for the manufacturer to protect those tiny wires??

    • @VintageDigitalWatches
      @VintageDigitalWatches  6 років тому

      I have thought about future proofing but I have to find a material that doesn't contract/expand while it cures or while it is exposed to temperature variations. If it did contract/expand it would end up pulling on the wire bonds.

    I never saw anybody doing this kind of chip surgery before.
    Gold bonding wires are originally held into place by friction welding (because gold is very mallable). Thus instead of conductive glue (which can cause short circuits) a bonding machine would be the correct repair tool. Unfortunately AFAIK no small versions for workshop repairs were ever made (only laboratory chip rework stations those cost enormous prices). A proper tool would include at least a micro-manipulator (pantograph mech against shaky hands) and perhaps a laser to aim properly. I hope someday a small open source hardware version will be invented, that can be produced e.g. on a 3D printer.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_bonding

    • @VintageDigitalWatches
      @VintageDigitalWatches  5 років тому

      Hi, yes I did go through a few videos to see how wire bonding is done and checked some used machines on eBay but they are thousands. So I went ahead with the 20x microscope, and I do understand the concern of shaky hands as it is indeed very small room for error. Since the fix I upgraded to 60x ocular which make some difference. As for manipulators they are also in the hundreds and I make this kind of fix once a year at best so it is not quite worth it.

      From a donor watch, not the same brand, but still an old one that has the wire bonds exposed which allowed me to pick them off.

      Hi Jeremy, I have quite the backlog because of viewers requests and will probably stay away from accepting so many fixes. If it the DBC 63 the you might want to try to clean the zebra strip that sits in between the keyboard and module, you can access it by removing the module. Regards, Tibi.

      Vintage Digital Watches I have cleaned the part you talked about, but I found another problem. While putting the battery back in for a replacement, the backlight stayed lit and there was no display. Now I believe the battery has run out, and I have another one coming in the mail soon. When it gets here I will try to change it out but if that does not work then it is beyond my level of knowledge in digital watches. I am ashamed because this is my favorite model and I would have loved to get it back to a better condition. I know that you have a backlog of orders, and I am not trying to pressure you, but I will gladly wait if you want to take a look at it. I think it would be a nice video because I never see any about this watch model or it’s repairs. If not, that is fine and I might find a repair company that can take a look at it. All the best, Jeremy
