I’m glad I found your video. I too have an closed avulsion fracture of right ankle. It happened yesterday. I wish I could say that it happened during an amazing athletic stint but it didn’t & I’m not an athlete, just clumsy. My avulsion fracture happened while I was carrying boxes down our stairs & misjudged where the bottom step was. I already had a boot, it’s a boot that can be worn on the right of left foot, I broke my left foot 2 years ago while working in yard. Here’s to a speedy recovery to all of us! 😊
Thanks for sharing. Just had the same injury last Tues when I was out running, rolled my left foot over the edge of the concrete pavement over to the grass patch. Heard a loud pop/thud and mighty painful. Thought OK, this is just another sprain, I tried to run it off, nope, it felt strange. OK I am going to walk it off, ended walking about 2km more to buy dinner and then back home. Not the best decision, could had made it worse. A bit of swelling and bruises the next few days, one week in, painful when pointing/flexing my foot forward. Walking on flat terrain is ok, climbing stairs is ok, going down stairs is a problem. Headed to a medical facility, x-ray confirm it is a avulsion fracture with a tiny floating bone fragment at the bottom tip of the Lateral Malleolus. Bought a similar lower leg support brace as you have there. Hope my boss will allow me to work from home for at least the next couple of weeks, my mode of transport is packed public train and by foot 1 hour each way.
Sorry to hear that! I hope it heals soon. I'm 11 weeks post-injury now and it's back to normal (although those 11 weeks felt like forever). I'll try and do another video to cover the rest of the rehab.
So I saw a private ortho specialist 2 weeks ago, he did the 'Drawer' test and told me I had at least torn one ligament, told me to wear the AirCast for 4 weeks "and we will see if the ligament will grow and attaches itself at the end of 4 weeks, if not you need surgery". I had also seen another (public hospital) Sports Injury doctor, and he did a ultrasound scan on my ankle, wouldn't tell me how bad it is (sprain, or partial torn or complete rupture). He said that "its nothing, you should start PT sessions to strengthen the ankle". Was not offered to do an MRI scan from both doctors, maybe I should had insisted for one to get a fuller picture of the extend of my ankle injury. So with 2 different diagnosis, I am just taking it slow for the time being, just doing mini foot raises and one leg balance exercises, nothing high impact with sudden ankle/foot movement until I get to see the private specialist to get a MRI scan. I can walk fine, no bruising/swelling, slight pain at the heel when walking down steps.
Hello chris. Also runner here. Got also an avulsion fracture to my ankle last Saturday while running on inflatable castle😥. The A&E gave me a boot and told me i could walk on it right away pain allows. Is this safe to walk on a fracture at that early stage? Did you walk with your boots right away? Thanks 🙏
Hi Chris. Thanks for the video - just had the same thing happen to me so this was really helpful. Were you biking within the first 2 weeks after the injury in the boot? How soon did you start biking in cycling shoes?
I went straight back to cycling shoes and was cycling about a week post-injury. I did ask the nurse about cycling in the boot but he said just use cycling shoes and spin super-easy so you don't put any load on the ankle.
i just did this 2 days ago. i definelty couldnt limp home. Had to get my wife to come pick me up! Luckily id just come off a trail run so i wasnt deep in the forest!
Thanks for this video I just had an avulsion fracture this past December on the 9th ice skating. I’m recovering almost making the 6 week mark next Monday and I’ve been walking fine without my boot even though recommend to non-bear weight on it. I’m supposed to follow up once I fly back home but few questions do you still get some pain now and has created any limitations for you now as an athlete?
Interesting vid. I experienced an avulsion fracture in 2003. Followed the recovery sequence perfectly. Twenty years later, I'm totally mobile, but it feels like the ligaments & tendons in my ankle are episodically 'braided' - mild discomfort, but full range of motion. What's your experience been over the past couple of years?
Quite shocking to hear you're not using crutches and that after 2 weeks you're allowed to swim and cycle as I'm now 4 weeks in and in no world they'll allow me to do any swimming
@@ChrisWorfolk thanks Chris, I'm glad to hear it. I'm now back in the pool with the pullbuoy but feels like it'll take forever before starting walking and running normally again. Had a MRI and obvs the ligaments that were attached to the tip of the fibula are both damaged and a lot of bone bruising/trabecular injury which is painful as hell. I'm using ankle braces but not the appropriate one, cause I had literally no guidance, same with exercise, bit of a limbo really not knowing for sure what I can and can't do. I ordered the ankle brace aircast A60 as I feel I need a bit of extra support to come out of the boot completely after 6 weeks. Just in case this can help someone else
@@cricketycrickets3141 morning, yes I am, I've been off it for a while. I'm 4 months in and still have the pain for bone bruising to my tibial malleolus, bit of stiff foot in the morning and it doesn't feel normal completely, but at least I'm back to a relative normality. Haven't ran outside yet though
I had an avulsion fracture as well. Initially I was told it was just a sprain 😳 the doctor didn’t see the fracture on the x ray!!! then I did MRI (9 days after the injury) and now I have to wear the boot for 6 weeks. my ankle is in good alignment and there is no misplacement, will it heal completely? My podiatrist told me to do mobility exercises but I don’t think it’s a good idea since it’s broken…
Curious to hear how this healed a year later. I did the same injury (grade 3 ankle sprain) and they (now tell me after doing an xray 1 year on after missing it the first time) that they suspect an avulusion fracture. Luckily I rested it to a degree (crutches and wrapped up) but had I known this ahead I would probably had a boot. A year on I can do 10k type runs on it but it hurts (mostly achey after but when I run also), I push through as the pain isnt bad enough stopping me running, but just curious how long this thing is going to hurt for. How did yours recover as sounded similar?
I've been really lucky, the rehab has worked well for me. I've posted an update here - ua-cam.com/video/6SBbWjGKVeQ/v-deo.html - hope you get better results soon!

Great to hear you have recovered. Hope to be able to at least go for morning walks in a couple of weeks. Some ways to go for me haha!
I face same situation last week and it is avulsion fracture in my ankle. Probably going for surgery next week.

@@Mercuery It's really frustrating when medical professionals cannot agree on what is going on! Hopefully you'll get some clarity soon.
glad you are able to keep some of your fitness activities up. do look after yourself, make sure you are getting good amounts of calcium etc.

I’m screwed I fracture it 2 weeks ago and need it to heal in No more than 3 weeks

I haven't noticed anything but I typically have stiff ankles anyway.
Hi Chris did you get surgery eventually? I’m in so much pain right now not sure if I need a surgery or not
Sorry to hear that, sounds grim. I didn't need surgery.

I’m in the same shoes bro, 5 weeks I just took the boot off today and now I have to start learning how to walk again, also my foot looks crazy wild 😂
It was all pull buoy to start but yes, I was lucky to get back into the water very early.

No, I didn't use anything specific, just in my head.

Sorry to hear that; sounds like a rough ride. I was back running long distances after about five months and it is completely healed now.

I don't want to give medical advice but for me personally, yes, mine has completely healed.

Hi im in my like 9th week, a bit of swelling is still evident, is it normal?
Hi Morientes. I can't answer that as it would be medical advice and I'm just sharing my story. But I wish you well with your recovery.
Yes it will go with time but use ankle binder
