- Before Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale conquered the small screen as Perry and Della in 1957, pre-code king Warren William breathed life into ESG's famous lawyer. Over the course of two years, he was supported by three different Dellas: Helen Trenholme (1934), Claire Dodd (1935 & 36) and Genevieve Tobin (1935).
Highly dissimilar to the popular TV version, these are my favorite scenes of a gentlemanly Mason with his girl Friday. Not as memorable as Burr's stature, smirk and glare, and paling in comparison to the grace and charm of Barbara Hale (not to mention her enticing chemistry with her fictional boss), the early silver screen Perry Mason and his Della Streets are still a lot of fun to look at - from the first, more serious feature TCOT Howling Dog to the (seemingly) Thin-Men-inspired adaptations TCOT Curios Bride, The Lucky Legs and The Velvet Claws.

I knew it, Perry and Della were SUPPOSED to be in love. Would have loved to have see mb scenes like this between Raymond and Barbara🥰
Barbara Hale and Raymond Burr will always be Delka Street and Perry Mason but it is cool to see other variations on him as well.
Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale are Forever Perry and Della, but it's cool seeing the early stuff
They did love each other on and off screen an awful lot. It’s definitely interesting to see other variations too.
@@Jantv81 i know
I look forward to this show everyday the shows of today are awful I love this type of shows
Raymond Burr actually first auditioned for the Hamilton Burger role. It was Earl Stanley Garner, who was just as dull as Burr's portrayal of Mason, that suggested Burr switch roles and film an audition for the Perry Mason part.
Wow. I've been looking for any original Perry Mason uploads avail on UA-cam!
I'd prefer the Raymond Burr/Barbara Hale duo any day! Now they r Perry and Della!
thanks! this is so interesting!
Sorry, Joe, you may find Burr's Perry Mason character dull and humorless, but that's exactly what Erle Stanley Gardner wanted out of Perry Mason, and it worked for nine seasons.
David Gibson it is still working 60 years later!
+Barbara Cox right.😁
He looks kinda like David Niven.
Now that's a picture I'll have to get out of my head again. LoL! :o)
To answer your question, the different Dellas are brunette Helen Trenholme in The Howling Dog (1934, scene 1), Claire Dodd in The Curious Bride (1935, scenes 2 & 3), then Genevieve Tobin in The Lucky Legs (1935, scenes 4 & 5) and finally Claire Dodd again in The Velvet Claws (1936, scenes 6 through 8).
No way.
Geneveive Tobin played Della Street at some point in time?
Wonderful.
I love the suggestive scene at 1:50

........TCOT = The Case Of The.............(fill in what)...........
They are definitely unbeatable, I agree. :o)

thanks
After the doctor prescribes a quieter lifestyle for the counselor:
"Did you get that, Miss Street? No stimulants, no excitement. I'll have to get rid of you."
I wish they was more romance on the show!
Della Street is gorgeous
Fun!
I'm all with you. :o) :o)
Yeah
Warren William lookslike William Talman with a moustache LOL By the way which Della is which?
Hamilton Burger: I object! That comment is inconclusive and that person is way uglier than me. ;)
When I was a youth and reading the Perry Mson novels, I alway visualized Perry as a slick talking, roguish charcter. I think Warren Williams played him to perfection. I've always found Raymond Burr's characterization dull and humorless.
