The lyrics are specifically about a transgender woman, so having Anohni sing the part brings a real life bearing to the song, almost like it was written for Anohni. The performance is absolutely transformational and packs an incredibly emotional wallop, not just for the performers themselves, but the whole audience. I only know of one transgender individual in my life (the son of my wife's boss, who went through surgery and now lives as a woman). I disagree with most interpretations. I feel its a love that is fierce. Felt by both. Fierce, deep and unbreakable. not violent. Either because one is no longer here or one cannot respond. And they both know. And the ache that is felt inside is well...... I like my interpretation much better. And this is what this means to me. It hurts so bad.
