    I own this Uke and love it. The folks at Mainland are great to deal with as well...Highly recommend Mainland Ukuleles.

    Lovely uke. Lovely review. Sometimes I do rewatch old reviews (particularly of models i own, strangely). There really is a wealth of quality work there.

    Wonderful review! My first ukulele was a Mainland Red Cedar Tenor. I now have four ukes, and my Mainland has the best quality sound. It continues to be a lovely, excellent instrument. You are so right, Mike is a doll. Thank you, for all of your reviews, I so enjoy them!

    Not heard of them until I saw an American lady and who bought one today, hers is with the rope around it, really lovely and so is this!
    I’ve not even held a tenor yet but I’ll Definitely be checking Mainland out more!

    A Mainland Concert Mahoghany was my 1st solid wood instrument. Was so nervous buying it since it was much costlier than the Makala i had. It only cost $169 since it was repaired stock. And in retrospect I am so happy with the purchase. It sounds loud and bell like just like the tenor you are testing. I put Martin strings on it to tone it down.
    Keep up the good work!

    Beautiful! Nice price for a quality product (with a few minor gripes). Think I'd be proud to call that one my own, particularly since I also came from Indiana. Nice review, I'll add this one to my growing want list. 🙂 Oh. And thanks for the shoutout

    Would love for you to review one of their Mangos sometime. I've been intrigued by Mango Sopranos lately. The wood seems to elicit a wonderful deep midrange.

      I love my mango soprano. As a matter of fact I e let all my sopranos go but my Mainland mango remains, most likely for the rest of my life. I also lucked out in the finish, I’m not a gloss fan but I called Mainland and they had a “second” in a matte finish. I can’t for the life of me find a blemish besides some glue squeeze out on the inside.

    Great review as always. I love the tenor size I asked for your advice in other review and ended up with a tenor because of nut width considerations. Now I want a different sound (to add variety) and I was wondering if a tenor can sound like a baritone (I think that would be too big for my liking and it is super boring buying for baritones because there are not many) do you have any recomended strings for the job (with low D tunning on a tenor) people form UU say bari strings will be too "loosy" but also say you can put concert strings on a tenor or a soprano or the other way arround with no problems. On the other hand, How does this compare with the MAT-4? What would you prefer this or the Islander?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 роки тому +1

      With the right strings you can get a tenor to DGBE tuning, but i'm afraid I don't know which brand (never done it). Certainly bari strings will not work. It works between concert and soprano because the scale is not wholly different, but mainly because you are not changing the tuning. This is a far nicer instrument IMHO to the MAT-4

    Loved the tone. To my ears tenor ukuleles often sound too much like guitars, but this one, as it should, sounds like a ukulele. I might have spotted that mark at about 2'30". It seems to be an imperfection in the grain rather than a scratch that's been glossed over.

    Why do you like slotted head stock? I have been look into getting mainland concert ukulele. Would you recommend cutaway. Does Mainland make koa wood ukuleles and? What do you think of koa wood as opposed to mahogany? Do you have a preference? Of all your ukuleles what brand is your favorite? You said you would change those strings out, for what brand?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  3 роки тому

      Just like the way they look. Cutaways for me seem a bit pointless on ukes - not that hard to reach upper frets on a standard. No Koa in the Mainland range. Koa vs Mahogany is a subjective thing - depends on personal tastes, and I like both. Favourite brand is Kanile'a and I never give string recommendations - too subjective.

      @@GotAUkulele Thank you. What about rounded backs on thin travel ukulele.? Kanikee makes the islander you reviewed in this video, so a low end islander made in China with Kanileaa name is a favorite with good sound, sustain, etc.
      I appreciate your knowledge base and thus your opinion. should I ignore Luna, Breedlove, Cordoba, Lanikai, Amahi, Oscar Smidth, Hex, Kala, Ibanez, Hilo, Aqua, Kmise, Ohana, Diviser. All on EBay, my source as no stores in area. Mainland I found through add. Had never heard of Islander sold by Kanilea, I will check.
      Thankyou

      @@jasneskis What do you want to know about rounded back thinlines- they are ok. Kala make a good one. Of that list I would ignore Luna and Kmise. I have never played Oscar Schmidt (not available in UK market), Hex, Hilo, Aqua or Deviser so can't comment. Of the others I think Cordoba and Lanikai fall behind. The Islanders are better than all the rest in my opinion.
