A Film by Tom Mason and Sarah Klein
Executive Produced by Ken Burns
In this rare appearance as a documentary subject, George Saunders reveals the pitfalls of bad storytelling and explains the openness and generosity required to breath life into great characters. The film offers a direct look at the process by which he is able to take a single mundane sentence and infuse it with the distinct blend of depth, compassion, and outright magic that are the trademarks of his most powerful work.
Situated in an innovative and dreamlike visual world set to a lush original soundtrack by Antfood music, the seven minute film distills the magical essence of one of our most beloved writers into a work that will inspire old fans and Saunders newbies alike.
I wish UA-cam had a "this is dope af" button.
I swear to god if one more creative writing class at U of Iowa shows me this video in class I am going to drop dead
Would love to know who is showing it...as we have never heard about it being used???!
@@RedglassPictures Towson University is as well
UofA is doing now lol! But this video was beautiful. Creative writing majors >>>
@@RedglassPictures my prof from u of Winnipeg just linked this one as well
Johns Hopkins, too.
Such a natural, unpretentious teacher. Genius embodied. Respect.
Imma drive right into the ocean;
My name is Frank Ocean
Swim Good. Swim Goood. Swim goooood
The word ‘genius’ has lost all meaning on UA-cam.
"Do something beautiful." Thanks, George, I'm trying. Every sentence is an act of faith and I'm learning to trust and to listen, not only in the tumbled mess of creating but in the process of revising.
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I was dumb lost the login password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Wells Benedict Instablaster :)
@Layton Tucker i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.

So much good advice about writing and editing in this short video
excellent writing lessons here
Thanks for sharing. Great Stuff. George is so frank, human, and perceptive...
frank is an asshole, though
@@windigo44 yeah he's an asshole
Suzanne Lummis is luminous. Funny, fascinating and informative. I hope she will also read her own poetry.
Great video. I’ve just finished ‘A swim in a pond in the rain’ and loved it.
Me too! Saunders' humanity shines through, and it's wonderful to be led through those Russian masters by a modern one.
Ah it’s so brilliant and inspiring.
@@SaraNiemietz I wrote a short story inspired by his description of how he found his style by just goofing around and having fun.
It's love in progress. ❤
Currently in an MFA program, and it's so unfortunate how this open mindedness isn't more accepted. It seems like the more political, judgmental, and insular, the better...
Ouch!
And unfortunately it seems that, 3 years later, it hasn't gotten better 😢
I hope I find my savior who will lead me to the success of writing short stories.
wow.
Frank snapped at the barista because she reminded him of his dead wife, whom he dearly loved. His dead wife was always misspelling his name.
Christopher sent me!
Frank actually was an asshole. My father's name was Frank. He made a few mistakes family-wise, mostly because of his personality disorder. He wasn't perfect but I miss him.
“Frank was an asshole, but I really miss him.”
There’s your opening line. 😂👍
x
I love how his Ti logic includes a Te association but also addresses Si sensation. He is clearly an ENTP.
A story can start with a basic premise, which defines the conflict. From that, the main character can evolve. But, at that point, this character mostly calls the shots. And this, more or less, determines the path of the story--including its ending.
Frank snapped at the barista because she reminded him of his dead wife “whom?” he dearly loved
You are correct. And George is correct about Frank. Frank was my father's name and it's true that, at times, he was an asshole (if we're being real).
i mean the second sentence compared to the first sentence and can never be based upon the fact that the same thing has been said it is not as good ???
Why would somebody care about doing something beautiful??
rats and stats...one
Love Saunders; loathe Errol Morris imitations.
its not as good
