Great memories. I used to live 5km east from the Liga’s stadium to watch the approaches into RWY 17… everyday 5:30 PM Was my schedule to go outside and watch the Iberia a340-600 downwind the airport and make 90 degree turn for its final Approach!

Come on guys, stop acting like a bunch of angry schoolboys! That horrible accident happened a long time ago and all operators (notably KLM and Pan Am) learned some hard lessons. Yes I am a pilot who flew for the USAF and a major carrier in the USA, but I would be happy to fly on a KLM flight. They run their cockpits very well.
Quito airport lies at about 9.000ft... Imagine the extra thrust those engines need to generate for takeoff !! Especially in hot weather with no wind... Amazing quito and KLM being the only European carrier (besides Iberia) flying there!! Vamos todavía!

The FACTS are that the KLM Captain (Jacob Veldhuyzen van Zanten) DID NOT get confirmation from the control tower at Los Rodeos that the PanAm was clear of the runway NOR authority for take off. Captain Van Zanten did not want to run out of flying hours as KLM would have had to fly in a new pilot - these points were confirmed by the KLM 1st Officer, Klaas Meurs. It WAS the Dutch Captain's fault but to this day, KLM have NEVER admitted liability.
Since 911 the door is locked during flight but you might see in before or after the flight. There is nothing except the cost to stop you learning at 14. Most flight schools will let youtake 1 or 2 lessons without signing up for any course. If that is too expensive ask them which books or DVDs they recommend. Maybe you could buy the flight computer (a sort of slide rule used by all pilots) Best of all samples of training videos are free on UA-cam, King Schools, Sporties etc.

Is KLM the only carrier which operates the MD-11 these days? I thought Finnair is making it's last MD-11 flight this month, January? Anyone can confirm that? Such a magnificant machine!!
You can imagine at these altitudes 9300' MSL the groundspeed and resulting vertical speeds are higher. The runway is long but you have to plant it and get that baby stopped.
4 white lights is a normal procedure rwy 17 in Quito because of the windshear and crosswind, not good idea to go on flightpath.....it´s too low!!, is better to be a little higher, all aircraft lands higher and faster because of the thin air at 9220 ft of the ground.......that´s a really challenging approach, I flew a little cessna there and I almost landed on the grass....I´ll never forget....;)
i wanna be pilot too, that have been my dream since i was 5 years old, now im 15 and i still want to be one, i have the flight simulator x and this landing is one of the misions and its very very hard

First of all MD= McDonald Douglas(wich is from boeing) second of all if you read the discription you could knew this is a MD11 and last but not least: the cockpit of a B747-400 is NOT the same as in a MD11 look on internet. So the next time think before you say something wrong!!!!!!!!!
