  • Had no intention of visiting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for a second time during 52 Churches in 52 Weeks. I wanted to be visiting different denominational and niche churches at this point. But three things happened: 1) Cardinals have appeared to me at the most curious times, including during the drive to my first LDS visit, 2) The outstanding coordination and tremendous follow-up from the young-adult missionaries who invited me, and 3) The LDS I was invited to (that I tried to avoid for the first visit) harkened back to my past. Due to all the coincidences and how everything fell in place, I was extremely curious what the talk would be about... and if it would link to my personal past. I dislike talking about my personal past and want to focus on the churches - this visit was a personal discovery to figure out what might be happening with the strange coincidences that have been happening.
    Sure enough, the symbolism in the talk linked instantly back to a period that hit home.

    I'm a convert to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! I remember coming in the first day after the missionaries invited me, and felt so welcome. My parents were getting a divorce at the time, and saw so many families sitting together, and it filled my heart. I knew there was something there, and now I'm since been baptized, married for 14 years now with a wonderful return missionary and 6 beautiful children. I've been blessed beyond what i could ever imagine. Keep pursuing truth and the enlighten pathway where ever that may be. ❤️

    You made me cry, the spirit is so strong in you! Thank you for being kind to a church that means everything to my family. You are always welcome. You can't imagine the relief and tenderness an LDS member feels when someone isn't bashing us. We have thick skin, but it's still SO appreciated.

    I wandered in darkness for a time with addictions etc and a few years ago truly found Jesus and my true self at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with more peace and love than I could have ever imagined. I felt inspired to free myself from all additive substances and have never felt so free thanks to the teachings of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I also started gardening and the combination of filling my heart with God and nature and giving up my addictions and allowing Jesus to take away my sins and pain and I feel reborn and strangely my depression is also gone. I’m so grateful I found my family.

    Yea I`m 71 and I`ve been kicking that LDS Church thing down the road for quite a while now, and it`s not like I have a lot of time left at my age. It all started with a number of random happenings, the main reason was two young girls from the Salt Lake area in Utah, Abby and Annalie who used to sing on youtube. Religious songs among others, and there was something about the oldest girl, Abby, I couldn`t get her off my mind, it was like she was an old friend or something I don`t know or understand why I felt the way I do, but if it hadn't been for her I probably wouldn`t have given the Church a second thought, thank You, Abby.
    To shorten this story up, I came to find out they were members of the LDS Church, which sparked my interest then your videos along with a hundred others or so. I`m semi-crippled due to a spinal cord injury and no longer drive or have a license I have a handicapped cart to get around with, and today was nice so I went for a cruise. There is a small Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints In this little hick town I live in now. So I went to check it out, I`m going to try to kick that can up the street to that church, so wish me luck, I haven`t been in a church in many decades, and it scares me.

    What a great video! Thank you , Brother for sharing your experience. I am a convert to the church. Funny thing…when I was younger (in high school) I wanted to join the church. I felt God was directing me there but my Catholic parents felt otherwise. So wisely, my parent told me that I must take the next year and visit all the other types of faiths before I (or they) would make a decision on baptism. I took the next year and did just that… visiting churches and the different faiths of all my friends. One of the best pieces of spiritual advice my missionaries gave me was to listen carefully to the Spirit, no matter where I went. That no matter where I was in my journey, the Spirit would ALWAYS bear witness of TRUTH!
    So, this was my litmus test for the next year and boy was it a powerful guide! Be mindful of the Holy Spirit.
    That experience eventually led me back to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And thru another miracle, my parents’ hearts were softened and they allowed me to be baptized!
    That was 40 years ago. I am still so grateful that the Lord, thru the Holy Ghost led me back “home.”

    The thing that changed my life when I served a mission for Christ for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was seeing people we met with be converted and realizing that it was nothing I did or said-no 19 year-old can persuade anyone to change their lives that way, watching those people get their own signs and witnesses from God-and having the same thing happen to me-that’s what built the foundation for my life.

    This is such a beautiful journey. Thank you for sharing it! My religious upbringing sent me in the same direction as many of your friends - I became an atheist. A series of FORTUNATE events landed me in the back pew of a ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I was so comfortable there. I felt like I was home. I didn't expect that to be the case because "Mormons" live so differently and seem to have such extremely strict lifestyles when compared with other Christians, so why wasn't the worship service "extreme?" In time I learned that being truly and deeply converted to Jesus Christ and his restored church isn't the result of bold external forces like chanting, or brainwashing or fiery sermons. It's the result of the Holy Ghost's quiet, yet powerful, communication of truth to the heart of the individual. I've been a very fulfilled, grateful, and happy member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 35 years now. The blessings are endless. And the quiet, uplifting, converting spiritual experiences never stop coming.

    what is wonderful about this video for me as a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints is seeing the value you see in our missionaries and their callings. When you grow up in the church the full value of every facet of the church is lost on you bc we live with these things around us constantly. it's always there so we dont know what life is like without it. It's so refreshing to hear your appreciation of these things, which in turn helps me appreciate all the blessings that come from membership in this church. I'm sorry you have dealt with narcissistic abuse. I was away from the church for awhile and got mixed up with a narcissist, so I absolutely know what you're talking about. It is the worst thing I've ever survived. I am so grateful to be back at church and away from all that, and have the missionaries come over and help me with things, Heavenly Father knows exactly what we need and sends us the right help when we need it (for you it was cardinals for me it was my lasercutter) , {i couldnt fix my laser cutter for a year, and two elders showed up at my door and fixed it in like an hour! lol) I love being a member of this church. PS im sure i wasnt the only member who watched this and had to chuckle when you said strange occurences were happening to you, theyre not strange at all in this church. :) they just happen :)

Still, I believe the Church is true. The Spirit of God is the biggest reason... I've felt it so many times at church in absolutely powerful, undeniable ways... I truly believe it is the restored church of Jesus Christ because of the experiences I've had, and your experience with the cardinals and the prompting you had about the talk remind me of those... I'm a convert from back in the 70s. Raised in Alabama I had attended many different church's as well. The Lord will guide you as he did me to his restored Gospel, just don't allow Satan to encourage you to over analize things your being taught. Give the Holy Ghost room to testify to you of the truths of God. I have a much stronger conviction of this work today than I did 40+ yrs ago, but Satan is VERY real and he has certainly tried his best to detour me from this path. I can testify to you without any reservation that the fullness of God's Gospel and purpose for his children has been restored for the last time paving way for our Saviors return in glory to finish this work during the millennium. I have been in a narcissistic abusive relationship, luckily not for too long. After I got out of it, I was wondering, what was that?!?! I had a thought to look up narcissism, & started studying about red flags, etc. My assignment through church also had me studying about suicide. Shortly after, both experiences came together to help save a loved one from suicide. They felt no hope from being deeply involved with a narcissist. I was able to recognize what was going on & help them out. God is aware & will lead us along to help each other. Our bad experiences can be used for good, & the Lord gives beauty for ashes.
    Also, I love your journey & how open & respectful you are. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are used to other churches using their church time to speak badly about us (& their members let us know), but we need so badly to be united, especially as all religions are under attack.

    I am very impressed with your video and for the respect you show to those of other faiths. My own ancestors walked across the plains because they were driven out of their homes and found refuge with the saints in Utah. Many of my ancestors were from Protestant backgrounds. I myself wandered away from the faith in my late teens when I became involved with someone who was narcissistic. We were married for 9 1/2 years so this is a topic is very close to my heart.
    Although I was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I allowed doubters to come in and convince me it was not true. Much like you I went on my own faith journey to find a church I could raise my children in. I did not expect God to lead to lead me back to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but he did. I had profound spiritual experiences that showed me it was true. 23 years later I have not looked back. Following the teachings of the gospel has changed my life dramatically. Now I seek the Lord’s will in all I do.
    I found myself getting teary on my way home from work listening to your UA-cam video. After listening to the rest of your video and learning about the abuse you have suffered I now know why. I wish you all the best in your faith journey. God will help you heal and will help you forgive. Keep following the nudges or as I believe them to be the promptings of the Spirit.

    Great insights David! The principle of a lay ministry is amazing, especially how it gives regular people opportunities to grow, and not just as missionaries! Every current leader of the church is just a regular member who accepted a temporary calling to serve. And when they are released from that calling, they become just a regular member again except hopefully with a little added personal refinement and spiritual growth. A calling is never sought after or applied for, ever. Someone might serve as a bishop or relief society president today, and tomorrow will gladly serve as a children's Sunday school pianist or the building cleaning coordinator. It's beautiful.

    • @scottvance74
      @scottvance74 Рік тому +2

      "A calling is never sought after"... but higher callings are seen to reflect personal righteousness, and some people really get excited about the possibility of being a bishop, stake president, etc. Some leaders are humble, but many think that they are channeling god's will and tend to be controlling and in some cases at least slightly narcissistic. It's not a perfect system and when such leaders follow SLC and fail to report rape to local authorities, children can (and do sometimes) suffer. See the recent AP story about the bishops in Arizona.

    • @EricHancock
      @EricHancock Рік тому +6

      @@scottvance74 Unfortunately, we will not have a perfect system until Christ returns and reigns personally. We all look forward to that glorious day! Until then, God uses what he has... imperfect people... and we do the best we can as both leaders and followers.
      Btw, I have been an active member for 50+ years and have never met a single person who wanted to be a bishop or stake president. Not one.
      Joseph Smith did observe that when people get a little authority, it naturally goes to their heads. Maybe that's one reason the Lord makes callings temporary and emphasizes that we lead with patience and love. Being a good leader doesn't come naturally, but it is one of the lessons that comes naturally over time as we serve humbly and accept callings and releases willingly as they are extended.

      @@scottvance74 I'm currently a Bishop of the congregation/ward that David visited in Madison, Wisconsin. I can tell you that in an ideal world, callings are not sought after, but there are some who equate serving at a "higher level" calling with more righteousness. Anyone who gets excited about being a Bishop or Stake President is absolutely insane. When I was called, my first response was "Really? Me? You want ME?" I hate wearing suits and have at least one visible tattoo, but one of my gifts of the Spirit is to love and really see people as the children of God they are.
      No, God wanted me. I'm not a particularly pious person and certainly don't act the part, but the good thing about being a Bishop is that all you really have to do is love people like Christ did. The clerical stuff that comes with any position in a lay clergy church I broomed off to my counselors so I could focus on loving the widows and the folks on the fringes: that's where Jesus did His best work. So I hug all the widows, the downtrodden, the marginalized, the teenager with pink hair, the guy in the back in a jean jacket who smells like cigarettes, and the beautiful African woman in traditional dress who only speaks French. Of course, I love the conventionally dressed clean-cut folks too. One of the few benefits of sitting up behind the pulpit is to see all the faces of my sheep. I will miss that beautiful sight when I am released from my calling later this year. We usually do five years as a Bishop, as it's a lot on top of owning a business, building a new store for my business, an still being a good husband and father.
      It is not a perfect system. But we're trying, and a lot of us are asking for more training, more consistent policy, higher guardrails, etc. Narcissists are everywhere, and there are 35,000 Bishops worldwide, so like every denomination, some are bound to slip through. And yes, tragic things happen (i.e. Arizona), but I can tell you I've had to (sadly) deal with a few cases of abuse, and I felt supported in my reporting, both to the church and to the local law enforcement. Most of us don't deal with SLC very often, as we run independently as far as most things go. We can and should and will do better.

      @@DarrenBush Sounds like you are doing an awesome job for your congregation. Most members and leaders that I have met work tirelessly to help their congregations. Regardless of whether or not there is a God, showing love and helping those around you is a wonderful thing which helps both people in your congregation and hopefully also gives you a greater sense of enjoyment in life. I have no qualms with what you are doing.
      This does not mean however that the church is true or that it is justified in perpetuating lies about how the Book of Mormon and Book of Abraham were created or translated, whether or not there are historical Lamanites, whether God commanded or allowed racism in the past, or any number of other things. While I appreciate your service to your community, part of me is saddened by the lies that you and many other good people perpetuate upon your communities. Historical truths exist. Historical Lamanites do not. Evolution is real. Destruction of the planet through global warming and pollution is real and concerning. We can all do more - I can certainly do more. One thing I might say - a bishop always wants to be led by revelation. He and his counselors take turns picking who will speak. Sometimes it's revelation, and sometimes they just ask someone because they need a speaker for a few Sundays from now and here's this member standing here - that kind of thing.
    I love what you said about missionaries. My oldest son served a mission in Ghana, and then came home when COVID hit after a year, and then he finished his mission in Georgia. And now I have a son who is a service missionary. I feel so grateful for the blessings we receive through their service. God is amazing! And though missionary service isn't always easy, and in fact was quite hard for my oldest son, it pays off in big ways. I have a third son getting ready to start his mission next year, and he's nervous but excited. I feel the same. But sacrifice brings blessings.
    Also, I love the discussions in classes too! It's pretty rare that these classes are anything but a positive experience, and I always feel like my comments are appreciated. I like that because then I want to comment more, and it makes me dig deeper to see more ways in which the Gospel affects my life. And I really appreciate the insight and perspective of my fellow members. It's beneficial all around, to teacher and participant alike.

    Thank you so very much for your experience of going to 52 different churches in 52 weeks!!! Wonderful idea!! And I suppose we have many more than 52 churches/religions in this country!! I happen to be also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I joined the church when I was 45 and now I am 74! I didn’t have a formal agenda/goal to attend X amount of churches in X amount of time, but that’s a lot of what I ended up doing!!! But it was over the course of so many years!! I was raised in the Episcopal church(did you go to one of those?!) in Pennsylvania,, but I did not feel that that was the right church!! That it was missing a lot of truth I guess, though I didn’t know how to analyze it way back then!! I ended up trying transcendental meditation a bit, then becoming a Nishiren Shoshu Buddhist from modern day Japan!! I went to Catholic churches some, besides Methodist, which I liked more than any of the others after the LDS church!!!! Also Church of God… and some churches I don’t remember the name of! I did go to a few black churches, whose denomination I have no idea what they were!! Do like the black churches quite a bit, though they are totally opposite than the LDS church, in that they speak out a lot and are quite animated and “noisy”(no I think that’s a relative term, depending on what church you were raised in!!! The LDS services are very quiet, to show respect to Heavenly Father(we are in his house, when we are in the church/chapel!!)… I was going out with an Israeli fellow, when I was in college at the U of Miami… he was/is Jewish, but I never went to a Saturday synagogue service that I remember!! Though I did go to a brith, the Jewish ceremony of circumcising a child/baby… baby was the baby of friends of my Israeli boyfriend. He wanted me to marry him and convert to Judaism, but I wouldn’t do that!!! Even though I did not have a testimony of Jesus Christ, nor Heavenly Father at the time, I knew it was wrong to deny Christ as our Redeemer/Messiah, as the Jews do!! Also went to a Hare Krishna temple or two, in my exploration into new age and/or eastern religions somewhat…oh, yes, have been to a Sikh gudwhara with friends of ours…yes, I also was studying some with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, at the same time I was studying with the Mormon missionaries!!! We had a couple Witness friends. I went to their Kingdom Hall once I think… Never could understand the Jehovah’s Witnesses at all!!! Though there are some really good things in their religion!!! Each of the other churches has some truth, but the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has all of them!!! Good luck in your quest, and I will say a prayer or two for you!!!!

    I have been going back and rewatching your faith journey. I didn't find you until just a couple weeks ago so it's awesome to see your progression.

    Glad you had a good experience. I'm a member of that church. We always try to make (new) people feel welcome, as we should. I've been on a mission. It takes some guts to step into a congregation with strangers. I applaud you for that. Thanks for the video.

    Wow, i am so amazed by you sharing your story with us! Thank you so much. I am just going back and listening to all your past episodes after watching your most recent ones. I understand what you went through in the past. I dealt with a similar situation with my ex husband. It wasnt until he left me, alone with a 6-week old baby, that i realized how much he had destroyed my confidence and all relationships with friends and family. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We had been to the temple and been sealed. So going through that divorce was extremely hard for me. I still struggle from time to time 19 years later with self esteem and self confidence. It did take me several years to realize that i had worth still and that i was a beloved daughter of a loving God who had been there with me through it all. Now, 19 years later, I am still single and still a strong member of my faith. Even though i thought initially that i had failed at my eternal marriage, I've learned since then that as long as i keep my covenants that i made in the temple, i will still have an opportunity to achieve eternal life, even if its not straightened out until i am passed away and in the next life. God has a plan for me. I was blessed with my wonderful and amazing child who I raised on my own and who is an amazing young adult now. And kind of laughably, I have been again blessed with children that i never thought i would have by getting guardianship of my niece and nephew. So as mine graduated high school, i started over with a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old! I've had them for a year now and am raising them in the gospel as a single mom. I am so blessed and seek to look for blessings each day. After going through the trials I faced in that relationship, I believe it helped me truly find myself and develop my relationship with Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. The callings I've been blessed with and the children in my home show me that the Lord trusts me and places these stewardships into my hands that I once thought I would never be good enough for because i felt so worthless. Christ completes us. He makes us whole and takes those pains away. He truly heals. I am so happy for you that you have found answers to your questions and that you are desiring to learn and grow. You will be so blessed by your faith in Jesus Christ and your willingness to follow Him!

    Cool talk David. Appreciate your honesty and courage. Keep triangulating. God lives and knows us better than we even know ourselves. Lean into trust.
