Interesting, the contemporary classic music was going and still is in a totally different direction. Very skilled but seemingly totally unaware of the estethics of the different styles developing at the time for symphonic ochestra.
Maybe because this is not his primary genre, he might've been somewhat shielded from the newest contemporary influences (even though he was classically trained violinist and pianist, and from a family of prominent classical musicians). But I think he was also a very stubborn guy, in a good sense of the word. This is unmistakably Pohjola. A man with a very clear and personal sense of aesthetics.
He also turned down a chance of an international music career more than once, so he could concentrate on composing his own stuff in Finland. In interviews you get an impression of a quite inward looking guy, who was in his own words a bit "slow to warm up". Really a type of personality that just likes to do his own thing.
Well, on a more positive note one could also say he clearly has his own voice. Not only very skilled indeed, but also very esthetically pleasing, at least to my ears and musical brain
