      It's ok. If they've been climbing all afternoon, they're probably too pumped to pick up their car keys when it's time to leave, let alone squeeze. (It's not clear how they are still able to grip well enough to keep climbing at this point, but that's the way it works)

      I often said that rule to climbers with low experience cause they often give up in a middle of a climb cause they are afraid of failing on a big move or are simply feeling too tired to do the move : "do the move all the time, worse case you fall" (unless they are feeling a potential injure). If they fail I ask them if they would like to get an advice about the good way to do the move, most of time they take the advice. It is funny because often they have it good right after the advice, in that case result is all the time a smile...

      I know this is all light hearted, but it’s worth keeping in mind you don’t always know what trying looks like.
      I fell when climbing a few years ago and snapped my leg in half. Bone sticking out the leg and everything.
      Sometimes it looks like I give up at the top of a route without appearing to try, but there was a big mental battle going on there you didn’t see.

    If you see someone brush the holds of a climb, wait till they have their go. Don't climb it after they've brushed it. Unless they are brushing it for you because you're the cute girl climbing the V2 in the corner.
    Ask before giving any advice. Then give it sparingly. Unless you say 'wanna work this climb with me?' in which case you then discuss the climb.
    Totally agree that not getting a climb is because the holds were too slippery, wrong shoes, not enough skin, humidity, etcetera. It is never a lack of skill or effort. ha.

    • @icyfigher
      @icyfigher 2 роки тому +16

      @@chaosengine4597 well, actually there is some theory behind that why it works better for you. If you brush it yourself, and not just a bit but really good(up to 2 min), you waste a lot of energy. But since mostly others are waiting you don't rest much afterwards and so you go into the best attempt in terms of route condition with a loss of energy.

      @@alyssahayes268 Being a man I can't really say anything about the people being creepy thing, but the part about feeling judged is usually mostly in your head. I was pretty self conscious as well when I went from working out at home to going to an actual gym. Every time I walked my fat self up to a bar for one of my sets of a grand total of two band assisted pull-ups I was convinced everyone else in the gym must be thinking I'm an absolute joke and be annoyed with me for daring to take up space for such a pathetic workout routine.
      But once you get used to being in the gym and find a steady routine that works for you it becomes easier to tune all of those thoughts out and just focus on lifting. With time you realize that basically nobody cares what you're doing or how much you're lifting. And if someone does pay any attention to you it's usually just because they're trying to gauge how much longer it'll take until they can use the equipment or they're simply looking around casually between sets.
      Of course there are gonna be people who try to give you unsolicited advice (usually they mean well though, been guilty of that myself a few times) or stare at you creepily but I wouldn't let that discourage you. Lifting can be a very fun and rewarding process. I don't want to tell anyone how to best work out of course, I'm just saying with regards to not being beginner-friendly, gyms tend to get a much worse rep than they deserve.

    • @alyssahayes268
      @alyssahayes268 2 роки тому +5

      @@tulkasastaldo4114 I do lift at a regular gym too, but it definitely depends on what gym you're going to. One thing that sets climbing gyms apart though is that sometimes, people go out of their way to encourage you. At regular gyms, strangers don't push you to get 1 more rep or applaud when you finish a set, but people do cheer strangers on during their route and congratulate them when they're done. It can be hard for beginner athletes to get into a fun physical sport without that feeling of inadequacy or feeling like everyone is secretly judging you. But at climbing gyms, it seems easier to get over that (in my opinion) because of that intentionally positive culture.

      lol. my first time ever at a climbing gym as an adult, I ended up at a bouldering gym (my roommate said "climbing gym", had no idea it was going to be bouldering til we got there), and on the third wall I attempted I fell from like 8 feet and completely shattered my ankle. Couldn't walk for 4 months, gonna have a fat metal plate in there til the day I die. Out of the entire climbing gym, not a single person asked if I was alright, nobody did anything to help, at most people looked at me with disgust and turned away. I saw one group laughing at me. An employee wandered up to me after about 10 minutes and asked if I wanted them to call an ambulance. I declined because I was in shock and was worried about money, so after a while my roommate noticed me and took me home.
      It was the most humiliating, dehumanizing experience of my life. I can't imagine how shit a person you have to be to see someone visibly in that much pain and just ignore it. If that's considered "good etiquette" in the climbing community, I strongly feel that the rest of society would be a lot better off without people like you.

    1. Gyms are for picking up a partner.
    2. If you've learnt to climb in a gym, stay in the gym.(there's enough idiots in the bush already)
    3. Don't place bolts unless you will deck out .
    4. Don't place bolts within 10 meters from the ground
    5. There must be at least 7 meters between each bolt (rule 3 exception only applies for grades above 25 )
    6. Under no circumstances place a Bolt if you can place Natural pro.
    7. If the walk into the crag is over half an hour, always tell people it's only 5 minutes.
    8. Always tell people it's easier than it looks.
    9. Bring your music and play it loud
    And finally
    10. If you play loud music at the crag don't winge when a local (especially one of the old guard) boots your speaker into the bush, yells at you to go back to the fucking gym and grow a set of brass balls instead of using your stick clip to clip the first fucking bolt. (Usually at least ten metres up, unless you are at a woosy sports crag where the the bolts are placed at eye level and every meter after that)
    But most of all Have fun!

    Question: Why does it matter how many times in a row you try something if it's not busy? If somebody's working a spot hard, and they're getting really close to figuring it out, I just work somewhere else until they get it or give up. It seems like a slow way to progress if you're always having to interrupt every 2 tries to give someone else a try. Shouldn't it be more of a time thing, like no more than 5 minutes or something? I have no issue with letting someone work a problem for a bit uninterrupted. In a packed gym or crag I could see why it would be rude, but if there's other spots to work on, why should someone have only 2 tries to get it? As a skateboarder we recognize when someone's trying hard to get a specific trick or line and hold back to let them attempt until they get it or quit it.

    • @BeorOng
      @BeorOng  2 роки тому +11

      more of a small jabby joke, but on the actual matter its totally dependant on context. If you're pretty close to getting it most climbers would just let you at it, but the issue also comes into play of if you're not getting it then you probably don't have strength either way and need the 5 minute rest which means you standing at the climb, caressing each hold going hmm... mmmm...ahhh..hmmm or dialing the moves in in your head while recovering strength just means other climbers cant climb the entire section you're on which could include 4-5 climbs for a whole 5 minutes that the person wasn't climbing anyway when essentially 4-5 other ppl could have tried the other problems then gone away.
      Climbers are usually pretty good at determining turns as well I'd say and know when someone is close or not but its more of a lack of awareness an courtesy on the person climbing that this is a dig at, where they know they're nowhere close, they have no strength left, and they wont let someone else take a 30 second turn so they can move on

    • @TheQuicksilver115
      @TheQuicksilver115 2 роки тому +9

      You should at least verify. Take a step back and look around after your second attempt, if nobody steps up then you're free to go again. If you know someone is waiting it can be okay to ask them to let you try again, but not something I'd do every time. It's just about being respectful

    • @BeorOng
      @BeorOng  2 роки тому +5

      @@TheQuicksilver115 for sure man, sometimes people are just really focused on their own projects that they forget to step back, sometimes just walking in front of them gives them a little cue that you want to go.
