  • My brother and I took a 23andMe DNA test to see how the results compared and how it compared to a MyHeritage DNA test I took.

Thanks guys, that was interesting. I’m hoping DNA testing helps people get past all the unfounded racial bias around the world. We’re really just one big extended family. Take care.

There is science behind it. But their accuracy depends on how many samples they have for each group. They admit they can't be 100 per cent right but they'll be close.
More people taking the test will mean more accurate results.

I’m surprised they don’t tell you in the report how likely you are to get cavities. After working for a dentist, I’ve learned that this has to do with a type of bacteria in your saliva and this is a genetic thing as well. Since they have so much of your “spit” seems easy to have in the report? 🤷‍♀️

Yeah Ancestrydna has more regions and more in their Database. so for me that would make it more accurate.

My MyHeritage results made sense in terms of rough breakdowns, but I had a similar issue with English vs. Irish. From my paper-trail genealogy, I should be about 20-25% English and maybe 3% Irish/Scottish, but I was given 13% Irish/Scottish/Welsh and 0% English, whereas my father got over 40% English and 0% Irish/Scottish/Welsh. I think most of these tests are increasingly accurate, but they still have a hard time differentiating between different northwest European groups, probably because they're genetically very similar.

You should upload your raw data from Ancestry into DNA.land. It matches you to specific people groups even within regions. So rather than just saying I have #% Italian, it actually shows that I have DNA matches to specific people in Bergamo and Tuscany. And rather than saying I'm #% NW European it breaks it out to Scottish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Orcadian.

I did the ancestry dot com DNA test, as well as the 23 and me DNA test (I did the 23 and me testing for health reports which ancestry did not have). Both tests basically show what I was told growing up, Norwegian on my mother's side, French, English, Irish, and Scottish on my father's side. Both added some Iberian Peninsula, and the 23 and me results show >1% West African which was added some time after my original results came out. There was talk of a black man being in my maternal grandmother's history somewhere a couple generations before her, and now I know this might be actually true which I think is very cool. So basically speaking, my results made sense in comparison to what I was told growing up except for the Iberian Peninsula, which I think is also very cool. So I am basically a mutt which is what I tell people when they ask what I am, and if they are inquisitive beyond that, I tell them what I am. It's very cool to be different things, and I am glad I am mixed with a bunch of other things besides being all one. This video was good, facts without too much fluff. Thanks for making it! Have a great day.

12-13% Jewish is actually quite a lot, most likely meaning you have a fully Jewish great-grandparent or equivalent. I find it hard to believe that no one in your family would know or discuss this. Of course, conversion and/or concealment can be a likely explanation.

    • @catcountry1

My great-grandfather on my maternal grandma’s side was Jewish, or at least part. However she was raised Irish Catholic, so it wasn’t talked about.

  • @Justmemie

It seems a bit like you've not researched enough about ethnicity estimation testing honestly. Especially with how you wrote off the first test just because it didnt show up as irish specifically. These tests tell you about georaphical areas not nationalities. Dna that goes under brittish can also be found in northern france and denmark. And ireland/scotland. This is why 23&me might have included greece under balkan (if what you said in the comments about them having done that is true. I dont know because i dont use their services) even though greece is not in the least balkan. Balkan is albania all the way up to serbia (it's a controversional subject if that includes serbia above the river donau or not though). Pretty much what used to be yugoslavia if you will. So the first one wasnt wrong more than just not as specific as you'd prefer.
As for the sub saharan african you might want to be a bit sceptic of it because 23&me have been known to throw random african in peoples results. Personally i'd recommend ancestry because based on the higher amount of people using it alone their results are bound to be more accurate. Ancestry + using outside sources like GEDmatch is the way to go i think

'Ukrainian' part indicates no more than 'Eastern European'. What kind of Ukraine they reffer to? Former New Russia? Former Kiyev's russ? Former Poland's part? Former Romania's part? Any other former part? Those are very, very different cultures, Ukraine is not a country nor culture but some multicultural pot.

Great video enjoyed it. Technically speaking Ashkenazi Jewish is not European. That being said and I hope not to offend but both of your profiles look Ashkenazi. Now as far as reliabillity goes I will say that I have used Ancestry DNA and they did an update which made their ethnicity estimates somewhat absurd, and biologically impossible. Let me start by demonstrating the latter. I was tested and so was my mother and after the so called updates our ethnicities only match by 16%, and yes Ancestry itself has identified us as a parent child relationship. Now what 50% of your parents autosomal DNA you inherit is random and why siblings like yourselves vary from each other. That being said it still has to be 50% from each parent which makes my 16% ethnicity in common with my own mother absurd. If you can get it that wrong in a single generation why should they be trusted at all. My maternal grandfather is from Italy, and my maternal grandmother is of German via Hungary. Initially I was estimated at 20% Italian/Greece which agrees with Gedmatch. Now I show 0% Italian? I also went from 57% Germanic Europe to 5% Germaic Europe and 11% French. This is not a misidentification of source populations rather this is a major algorythemic error, since I don't match my own mother. I think I might try 23 & Me soon. I recomend downloading your raw DNA data to GEDmatch and playing around with their calculators and see which company it better matches. I recomend for you two Eurogenes, perhaps J test and MDLP world 22 calculators. Thanks for the video.

The traits tendency assessment has turned much of the DNA science into a comedy along the lines of astrology (what sign are you). Most scientists know your traits are mostly affected by the environment and social interaction you grow up with.

My results did make sense. I got mainly english and north-west european. I have no english ancestors but I saw that a lot of people from my region (lower saxony) as well as people from the netherlands always seem to get a lot of that. I think our dna and that from the english living on the south-eastern coast from great britain are probably so similar that it's difficult to distinguish. I'm still trying to figure out what makes the english dna different from the others though. As far as I came to know the "North-West European" is different from "Scandinavian" because the first one is a mix of germanic/ celtic while scandinavian is germanic only. "English" is prob. a similar mix.
My third big result is eastern european. that was no surprise as the family of my mother originates in eastern europe. my grandfather had an eastern european surname and my great-grandfather spoke russian. We do not know were exactly that family originates from as they lived in silesia long time before they came over further into the west but must be something from russia or ukraine.
my last result was finnish. but russia inhabits a lot of people of finnish-ugric origin like the mordvins and komi.
I did the test with myheritage
