- Story of English is a nine-part series devoted to studying the history and development of the English language. "Part Nine: Next Year's Words: A Look Into the Future" explores the direction that many language scholars believe the English vernacular is heading. Could the English language suffer the same fate as Latin? Hosted by Robert MacNeil of The MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour.
Seeing Barbados in this documentary has always made me proud of how I speak (being able to differentiate in different situations) and the sound of my accent. Whenever I travel and hear the Bajan accent, I can recognise it immediately.
Although this episode emphasizes the differences from standard English, I think it confirms the need for standard English as a "contact language" among the varieties of English speakers.
Wonderful series - this episode especially seems to anticipate the local and global English that has arisen in the first decade of this new millennium - twenty years before we could actually hear and see it happening. Thank you so much for sharing.
I didn't know until watching this series that the word "dialect" had negative connotations.
Thanks for taking the time to make this series available. However, it seems Program 3 is missing from the offerings.
