Keep your hands down! And don’t fall off!!
Why is it that when things start going badly, our instinct is to lean forward and raise our hands?? This is seriously the WORST thing to do and yet we all seem to do this!
You will notice that when your hands come up, you lean forward, your center of gravity comes up and off of the horse, and you end up in a precarious position if your horse decides to drop their shoulder and turn to the side!!
Ok great! So how do we fix this?!
Put a grab strap on the front of your saddle - and don’t be ashamed! Many of the top riders in this sport have a grab strap on their saddle!!
How do you use the grab strap?
    - Hold the grab strap with your hand along with your outside rein
    - Be sure that when you pull on the grab strap you sit back and pull yourself deeper into the saddle rather than out of the saddle!
-The grab strap can also be useful for if your hands are unsteady or if you tend to ride with your hands too high.
Watch the video to see how I use the grab strap when I am riding!
Here's a link to a grab strap but check your local saddlery too if you prefer not to shop online.

Oh thank you! Your demonstration of your hands going up and body tipping forward is so me. My horse spooked the other week and I reacted, as you showed, and we ended up out of the arena! I've got a grab strap but you're the first to actually show me how to use it - I've been trying to hook my little fingers in but then have no control with the rein aids. Virtual hug. Wow.

Thanks for making the grab strap a grown up accessory. I always have one on my saddle and it has saved my butt countless times. And helps so much with training the hands!

In the UK we call these a balance strap. I have always used them and are very useful in a variety of situations. For young inexperienced horse, riders, horses who lack confidence out hacking, in the arena, horses getting a little excited in group endurance riding. One of my horses is a 14 year old ex show horse who sustained a eye injury and has blurred vision on his right side. He spooks and instantly jumps to the left, the balance strap helps me to stay in the saddle, keep relaxed and gives him confidence. With the strap we can still enjoy sessions in the arena and hacking in the English countryside with pheasants jumping out of hedges!

Perfect timing for me Amelia. My trainer was just telling me about this. It looks so easy when watching videos, but is difficult for me to keep my hands still. I imagine using a grab strap will help develop the muscle memory to tackle this problem and allow me to concentrate on the many other riding techniques that need work! Thanks Amelia!

Using a grab strap made all the difference in steadying my young mare. I was annoying her with my unsteady hands and from using it I was able to train my arms into doing the right thing. Was thrilled to learn they are allowed in competition toon (at least at lower levels).

And this is so great, BTW. I never really knew how to use this strap deliberately. It was always more like clutching and holding on rather than steadying my hands and shoring up the outside rein.

I also find my grab strap to be useful in keeping me centered and not leaning to one side or the other on turns. I use it on trails to train myself to not motorcycle those sharp turns.

Good Morning Amelia: I totally forgot about the grab strap. I had 1 25 years ago on my saddle when I had my first OTTB. I don't know where it went but I just ordered 3 new ones from Amazon. Also in 2013 I took a clinic with Julio Mendoza and he suggested simply using bailing twine around the neck for the feel of the outside rein before neck straps came in. I rode with the bailing twine neck strap for about 8 months. I recently went back to using that neck strap 1 month ago on my 5 year old OTTB because he can be tricky with bucking into the canter. Great advice. 👍 I love it and will using the grab strap in your clinic 2 weeks.

The alternative to a grab strap is a Tellington Touch Neck strap for Bridle free riding. It attaches to the saddle front D with another strap and button secure fitting often found on outdoor jackets. A friends loves these.
They don't slide away but sit around the lower neck.
I still grab the mane if pushed. No shame at all. Stay safe👍💕🌈

The horse I ride has a grab strap on his saddle, but I never really knew how to use it without just grabbing it in a panic (which I sometimes forget to do and my hands just go up)! Thanks for breaking it all down in an easy to follow way - the best way to hold it with the reins and also when to use it

Awesome video! My trainer called it a Bucking Strap bc in the canter departure my mare would sort of give a little buck. However, after putting it on the saddle for that, we also found it was so helpful to help me with my outside rein AND to keep my hands down. Thank you for this video!

Ha! Well whatta ya know! I recently put the grab strap on my saddle but didn’t know it was this useful, I didn’t have any idea this is how you use it. I assumed it was just like an “Oh Shit” handle! I was curious how I would collect my thoughts enough on way to the ground to remember I have the grab strap and how I would have time to remind myself to grab the thing! Thank you! Hi Amelia. I have just started using a balance strap on my high energy reactive 6 year old, steadying my outside rein has definately helped. Like Julie I have been using the velcro keeper straps on the saddle pad on my older dressage horse who has a big bouncy trot which helps me sit alot deeper. I have not joined the two keepers together as just holding one side helps me to keep my thumb on top. I think your balance strap is a bit longer than mine. Thank for the videos they are very inspiring.

Love the grab strap! Really helps my seat in the canter. If the saddle doesn’t have a strap, I’ve also used the Velcro keeper straps that are on some saddle pads by attaching them to each other (with a little twist to line up the Velcro) creating a big loop that sits in front of the saddle. Also, the first time I used the grab strap was during a lesson on a longe line, a great way to try it out if you’re nervous about it.

I have one on my saddle: I thought about a neck strap but I don’t understand how they don’t slide down the horses neck! I thread my air vest clip through the grab strap. To be honest I never thought about riding with a hand holding the grab strap and I’m going to try that (my horse likes to scoot sideways/ spook and one time he randomly leapt in the air resulting in a fractured pelvis for me - hence the air vest and grab strap). Thank you for the advice and encouragement Amelia! I’m changing barns soon and that always makes my horse extra ‘looky’, nice to know I can hold my grab strap and feel no shame 😁

Amelia, thank you so much for the strap episode - it is a perfect solution! It reminded me when about holding onto the martingale when transitioning to canter (I used to do it for security when we first cantered in on the trails). My mare struggles with right lead canter in the arena and I get frustrated and tense up and then she struggles even more. Holding to the strap with my outside hand was a game changer yesterday! All your videos provide awesome solutions to our riding issues. Excellent videos!

Also refer to it as ‘bucking strap’ Always ride with one 😍 Especially useful when teaching flying changes on an ‘exuberant’ horse 😆 It’s also great to use in a lunge line lesson, no reins, just use grab strap to learn to sit the trot and canter 😉

I’m so glad you demonstrated how to use the strap at all the gaits, my hands bounce too much and my horse has what your husband calls out of body experiences on occasion so the strap is a necessary for me until i progress further in my riding. Question is when holding at the canter do you maintain the same contact or give just a little bit on the rein to accommodate the head motion so I don’t bump his mouth when his head goes down?

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage I used it again yesterday to stablize my outside rein and he exploded, tried to rear, run through the fence, ran sideways...not a pretty picture. I did mostly walk to settle him down and got him to relax into a lower frame but it took quite a while. He is just not happy being between both reins and legs. He is basically refusing to round. Still a work in progress and will have to forgo a show we entered for this saturday since he's so upset at the moment and this will probably take a few months to work through. :-(

Follow up. I looked up a horse chiropractor online and worked on 2 areas on my horse. 1) his pelvis is tilted forward per chiropractor who worked on him last Thursday. So I used technique for flattening pelvis the back lift. 2) saw TMJ video come up, watched it, he was talking about barrel horses that brace with head up. Release technique was simple. Did that before I rode as well. The difference was immediate! Soft, light in my hand, body more relaxed and he was willing to round and stay on the bit. This ride was the most positive one I have ever had on him. I did both releases post ride as well.

I have both a neck strap and an old flash strap hooked into the D-rings of my saddle.
I actually took a really nasty tumble grabbing for my neck strap, as his lordship had pulled his head (and therefore the strap) down his neck with him. I reached down, overbalanced, and took a dive out the left door. I was fine, beside a pretty nasty concussion and the need for a new helmet.

Great idea! I've already stabilized my 'flying' hands, but while asking for canter on horse with I have problem to do this - I'm forgeting about my hands 🤦‍♀️ So this looks really very helpful!:) And definitely I will use this solution for my daughter, because she has been practicing for 3 years and.. still use the hands in improper way.. I think it would be great tip to my teacher for beginners :)

That’s a good point. Mine is 12” buckle to buckle and I bought it in the UK visiting my folks. I was like Hurrah, a black grab strap! I compared it to the brown one I had before, purchased here in the states and the brown one was a few inches shorter. They do come in different sizes and if we’re going to be using them the way Amelia suggests longer is probably better.

I would probably go back to groundwork if they were really naughty, because they need to find their own calm in every situation and work through reactiveness on the ground.
