Honda Highness CB 350 Has An Achilles Heel And This Is Where Meteor 350 May Score: Suspension

  • By now, I have ridden the Honda Highness CB350 enough to tell you one thing - the suspension is set up just a bit too stiff for my liking. Highly placed sources in Honda told me that 50 per cent testing of this motorcycle was done in Japan, where the roads are butter smooth and can accommodate a stiff suspension.
For a motorcycle that will primarily spend its time in the city, as a premium commuter, on less than stellar Indian roads, do we really need a suspension that is stiffly sprung? At least I do not think so.
As a close friend and a fellow owner of the Honda Highness CB 350 put it: "Suspension hi weld kar diya."
Jokes aside, the suspension is NOT BAD. Please do not get this idea from the video - there are nuances to what I am trying to tell you. This is a good suspension to ride spiritedly, but a tad on the stiffer side for the city. What doesn't help is the fact that the seat is on the harder side too.
Again, great attributes for the highways, but I'd want a plusher ride when I do not want to be riding fast (which is probably what most of you would agree with).
Enter Royal Enfield Meteor 350. Royal Enfield have been doing their thing in India for decades and their new platform - this is my educated guess - will not get the suspension wrong. If previous Royal Enfields are to go by, the suspension would be supple enough for the city and the highway. And that is the biggest advantage the Royal Enfield will hold over the Honda Highness CB 350.
Of course, Honda's other big flaw is its decision to sell this bike only through Honda Big Wing showrooms (four in country as of writing this), but that will turn into the Highness's biggest strength too in a year. That, however, is a discussion for another day.
But this video is not all about the suspension. The Honda is a well thought out product and its strengths far outweigh the little cons it might have. For example tank range. I have tried to go a bit in depth about it in the video.
I hope you enjoy these ramblings of a madman.
There's more to come in the Honda Highness CB350 video series.
If you like my work or are interested in knowing about my other motorcycles, you can check out my Instagram page: / abhinavbhatt19
    Have a nice day. Cheers

Your opinion matters Abhinav.. And it's great to have a experienced rider like you to walk us through this experience of the Hness 350.. Since they have designed it for the city.. It will be a good company for potholes at moderate speeds in the city without bottoming out. However on the highway while cruising with a pillion the suspension would come on its own with the weigh of rider pillion and if possible the other unsprung weight.. Just my thoughts though.. Since I am a user from the age of 16 riding the 1968 made royal enfield and 2003 thunderbird. Let's see how the Meteor compares after Royal Enfield was stuck awe of the highness and their launch was delayed 😊.. By the way there is a bigger Honda coming soon. 😘

In cycling, a firm saddle is what is recommended because your sit bones are meant to be seated on a firm surface. I guess that rule applies to motorcycle saddle as well and I always find a firmer saddle makes more sense than a soft/cushioned one. I also love firm suspension as it offers way better traction and keeps the rubber firmly rooted on the road. Makes a massive difference to traceability and cornering

Suspension can be softened by tuneing
Or by increasing length of spring in suspension which I did in my Honda bike. New oil in suspension make it stiff after it becomes old it gets softer .
But stiffer suspension make handling better cornering better
Softer suspension good in off roads or road undulations, humps . But handling at high speed become less .
But comfort is my preority so I go to this fellow suspension expert who owns a small shop only suspension work he . Removed spring and manually increase length

Hi Abhinav, I am 6ft one and a half inch tall and tip the scales at 120 kgs. Since I took delivery of my Inti (mind u, I have taking to biking after a hiatus of 19 years, my bike during my college days was a Kawasaki Bajaj KB 100 RTZ Delta), every jhatka of the road was felt on the tip of my spine which was really uncomfortable, at some time painful. Reported the same to the RE dealership, they changed the settings of the rear suspension, it was better, but not what gave me that comfort level. As per the owner's manual, the tyre pressure is to be at 32 psi front, 36 rear. After experimenting over a period of time (I am always a single rider with no luggage), for me the ideal comfort level was got at 32 psi front and 32 psi rear. Try experimenting with the tyre pressure on the Hness

Any bike with alloy wheel will feel harder in comfort, spoke wheels offer immens comfort as they absorb the shock first, then the shock is transferred or handled by suspension.
So more than the suspension, it is also the type of wheel (spoke/alloy) decides the comfort levels.

Reading team-BHP member Sebring's comments, it's very obvious that multiple hardcore Bulleteers are getting converted towards the "big wing"; no pun intended.
Meteor is going to be cruiser styled bike, whilst CB 350 is a standard/classic styled bike. Thus comparision with Classic 350 is unavoidable me thinks if not in terms of platform/technology then in terms of spirit of classic style🙂

You need to give around 100kms to let the new rubber to bed-in on a new rims. Even if the pressure is perfect at the time of delivery, u should always recheck pressure in about a week or 100 kms, which ever comes early, that applies to new tyre replacements too.

    Hey Abhinav,
Gr8 video again!! I will say, this is still the run in period of the bike. So maybe after the 1st service, is possible that it might feel even better. Moreover, suspension can be adjusted to suit your purpose. You seriously, might want to get that done during the 1st service. And outs also very well possibly that post the 1st service the ride quality improves. Time will tell!!
Tnx for all these videos on various aspects. Appreciate it!!
    Stay safe, take care!!
The RE Meteor 350 launches on the 6th Nov. But one would have to wait a month b4 getting some good inputs on it! Hopefully, like you, there might be a RE enthusiast who takes it upon herself/himself to do pretty much what you've done with the CB350. Seat position, heat dissipation, pillion comfort, ride quality, vibrations etc will all be revealed post the 6th.
I still have my reservations on the build quality of RE. Only time will reveal all these secrets!! 😉😉 Also, diehard RE fans will be prepared to give an & a leg for the RE Meteor 350!!

I don't think the markets of two bikes should collide. Meteor is a full blown cruiser stance bike with lowered seat, forward foot pegs and raised handles whereas highness is a retro classic with a normal seating stance comparable to that of classic.

What are you even saying. It is available in tier 2 and 3 cuties by next month and honda had promoted it for touring too. The only thing that would matter in the latter regard is the cruising speed of cb350 to REs.

As usual very crisp and precise observations Abhinav ✌️ I'm still waiting for a proper twin cylinder tourer for the last 1.5 yrs. RE is dead slow in launching the cruiser version of the #interceptor. #Honda now seems to be in the right track and I'm 🤞 for Honda to launch the twin cylinder #CB 500. After all when it comes to reliability it's hard to beat them. Let's see 🤐

  • @hagarthehorrible1391

As someone who disliked RE and then fell in love with it and to own it, imo its a difficult job for any brand to carve their own piece of the pie in this segment. The allure of an RE is inexplicable even with its many flaws. Nothing matches it. Their new bikes could potentially lose that "character".

No PDI by the dealer is concerning. Hopefully, it was just a side effect of a rushed rollout. That said, for a bike that will ostensibly spend most of its time puttering around in city traffic, a stiff suspension can be a deal breaker, even with comfy seats. Will you be playing with adjusted preload to see if there's a hidden sweet spot?
IIRC, the SP 125 also received similar critique, which is a shame, because it seems to be a decent bike, albeit a tad overpriced.
