  • The Mercedes-Benz ABC System does a great job assisting vehicle stability and cornering. In many ways, it's the perfect compromise between a suspension setup for comfort and one for performance.
The system doesn't come without its challenges though, something that CRP Innovation Council member Evan Brodof of Evan's Auto Care in Cincinnati wanted us to speak to in this week's Inside the Brands video.
The challenge of the Mercedes ABC system is often the ABC Valves in the Block can get dirt and grime inside the valve and the o-rings can then get damaged and cause a leak. Additionally the hydraulic fluid can also get contaminated. Since the fluid runs the ABC system as well as the Power Steering the cost of repair can reach upwards of $7000.
To help your customers avoid taking a one-time hit like that, Evan and other Independent Mercedes specialists recommend servicing the ABC system every 40,000 miles, which includes a fluid flush and replacement.
We recommend using the Mercedes OE Pentosin CHF 11S hydraulic fluid when you do this service. This synthetic hydraulic fluid is designed to work in a wide range of operating temperatures. Now, keep in mind that the Mercedes ABC system uses about 10 liters of CHF11S but it outweighs the cost of major repair by a long shot.

That's all fine and good but when you go to Mercedes to get the system flushed they'll either find something wrong or break something so you still have to pay $3000 minimum. Avoid the dealership at all cost. Fix what you can yourself and when it finally goes replace it with a non air suspension kit. It's like 2000 for a total replacement.

The valves look very similar to what you would find inside an automatic transmission. I can only imagine that a lot of people buy the fluid by the case.
