If you look, you can find where he talks about having just enough money (roughly $20M) to save either Tesla OR Spacex and he mentions it was like having to decide which of his two children should survive but he decided to take a risk and split the money evenly between the two companies knowing they could both fail without enough funding but he pulled them back from the brink of failure thankfully. It was his own personal money too. He gave everything he had for these companies.
