One thing I'd like to mention is the fantastic music. They brought on Mili to do the sound track, and they did absolutely fantastic work. For those who don't know, they are a tiny indie music group that mostly releases on youtube, but occasionally manages to get a bigger gig (they did the OP for Goblin Slayer, for example.)
This is the main reason I took an interest in the game, Mili’s music is something I love and I believe a game’s soundtrack can make or break it sometimes.
2:35 I don't think it's a bug, your only way to increase the healing charges is by equipping relics. The Priestess Wish items only increase the amount of health recovered by praying.
Thank you! I just picked this game up and it’s fanfuckingtastic but I didn’t know what the wish did. I thought it might be something like a fire keeper soul/estus flask but I wasn’t sure.

I didn't care what the game was about, nor that it was a 2d side scroller, nor what were the traversal mechanics. I knew it will grab my attention immediately when I saw 3 seconds of the gameplay and my immediate reaction was "Lily is a Multi-Stand User, I need to try this". The game is amazing!

I really don't understand how someone critically analyzing the game didn't notice that the big green number that shows up upon healing didn't increase until he picked up that '+ prayer restoration' pickup.

Man I had the exact opposite experience with boss fights. I had a hard time with the earlier bosses and breezed through the later ones. Great game and great review!
SPOILER BELOW FOR SECRET ENDING The biggest disappointment of a boss for me is the Blight Lord. Almost all his attacks are really slow or can only hit you if you are on the ground. However, since his weak point is floating, you are almost always in the air and the strategy amounts to jump, attack, parry occasionally projectile and kill the occasional enemy, repeat. I loved the music, but the boss was really disappointing for what it took to get there
@@branflakescereal4174 why are you posting end game spoilers in a review video, where obviously people who haven't played the game yet will come? That's just moronic.
I actually just had a friend bring this to my attention yesterday, and with it looking like a combo of hollow knight and salt & sanctuary, which I both like a lot, definitely planning to pick this up at some point

Charges are three only unless you equip a relic. Every prayer you collect heals you more by a certain percentage instead of increasing the charges, that's what those do
Only having 3 heals is not a bug, the wishes only increase the amount of healing recieved per use, there're at least 3 different relics to increase the amount of uses itself. Probably should add a note on the video saying it's not a bug since I bet some people won't buy the game until that "bug" is fixed
I don’t know if he mentioned it or not but one thing I would like to add is that the game has 3 endings, and depending on which ending you choose the game provides quite the difficulty spike, with more areas and a lot more story to dig into.
@@micahwendell Not really. Its that you can get the first ending about half-way through the game. the second one if you just went through the map, not really looking for secrets, and just fight the final boss. the last, Real ending, you have to find all the amulet fragments, gems and stone tablets hidden around the map, craft it into a full amulet, than fight the final boss. so, its not that you can chose to make it harder, but more like "its harder if you want to get the final ending". How strange, I remember playing before it hit 1.0 and i loved the combat. Lily’s spirits were fast to execute and responsive, and dodging during attack combos was easy to pull off. Was that changed for the full release?
It seems like it. I never played the beta or demo they had but attacking and dodging in quick succession can be tricky. As mentioned the combat fluidity harkens to lilies small size and defensiveness. And while it is frustrating at first after a few hours you get a rhythm and pace. So far a few abilites are really strong (only 4 hrs in) not op as spells have limited uses before their empty (recarched at respites aka benchs) The combat is def more methodical in nature which is nice. I am a little concerned about the size of the map overall though, they said after about 10 hrs they finished the game and im hoping they just blitzed through.
I haven't seen the game prior to 1.0 but having played it for the first time this past week I certainly can understand where people take an issue with stiff movement during combat but I agree with you on the point of it not being so difficult to dodge in between attacks and keep strings going if you knew what you're doing.
I feel the hardest thing to learn coming off of Hollow Knight is with HK the attack animations are a few frames and that decision works with HK's more frenetic experience. Ender Lillies has a more methodical combat method that features more windup and execution animations than HK. I kept finding myself trying to dodge, but locked in an attack animation making the whole system seem unresponsive.
Loved the game, it was pretty hard. Most bosses killed me at least 10 times, had to plan my strategy different for each. They have 3 phases and you need to understand how to evade or parry their moves. Need to trace an strategy on which spirits to equip for each boss and how to use them for each phase.
I saw this game in the store before it came out and was immediately thinking it was gonna be good just based on the things I saw. Didnt watch the full video because I don’t wanna be told too much about it but it’s great to know my hunch is looking to be right. Been on a roll lately with my switch games
This game is truly incredible I actually found it less frustrating than hollow knight, which is most likly due to its methodical fighting system. Importantly, the healing mechanism is not bugged and working as intended, and the game does become very very difficult with bosses. However, the methodical nature means that improvement with each boss attempt still feels rewarding and progressive.
True that. Difficulty for me felt so balanced. Some bosses really offer a fair challenge and the easy platforming and not losing money on death make the game less frustrating and so enjoyable. Although some items require a bit of exploration/skill to get them. But in general game feels fair, more than most metroidvanias.
@@davidvila5053 bosses aside, what is a bit frustrating about ender lilie's as in any other heavy soulslike game, is the exploration aspect, it's really hard to explore a room for secrets while mobs are alive, so everytime Im looking for secrets I would just clear the whole room from mobs then explore it freely, which became more tedious with harder enemies as going on, especially in an area like the lab. Now bosses wise, I think hollow knight and ender lilies match each other's difficulty with hollow knight bosses keep scaling in difficulty more properly up to the hardest true end boss the radiant, in ender lilies the difficulty peaked at Ulv the mad knight, bosses after it were much easier but still imposed a challenge non the less, I killed lab the boss 1st try, and the true end boss in 4-5 tries and some of them were due to resources mismanagement as I didn't know the boss has a second phase (2 attempts to kill the 1st phase, and another 2 to kill the 2 phases). On the other hand Ulv, took me few dozens of tries (lost count really)
It feels like people expect this game to have similar playstyles and movements as Hollow Knight then get disappointed when they realise that it's a different game and they have to change playstyles Moving on from that, I love this game (became my favourite now) and I'd highly recommend it to people who like this style and concept of game I didn't really struggle too much and thought that most of the bosses were too easy so I'm surprised people kept mentioning how difficult it is, so I guess I can't say much about the difficulty of the game. I hope some DLC is in the works, even if i have to pay for it.
Pretty sure the priestess wish just increases the healing power of prayers. It just says Prayer Restoration + which is horribly confusing. I picked up like 2-3 and still have 3 prayers
combat rythm is weird especially at the beginning. her fucking dolphindive dodge is annoying but once you get the double jump and the real dodge plus a few spirits man this is some addicting shit! freaking love it!
I was hoping for a comparison of some sort to Hollow Knight, as I was also getting similar vibes from what I've seen of the game. Definitely makes me more interested in getting it.
Bro, in no way is this game the same as hollow knight besides the fact its a metroidvania type game. Its fighting mechanics are in no way similar, only thing the same is the wall climb, double jump, dash, etc. BUT THATS BECAUSE ITS A METROIDVANIA GAME. I wish people would stop calling every metroidvania game a copy of hollow knight or “like hollowknight”
Hollow Knight is excellent. Large map, some tricky/challenging items to find/reach, tough enemies and some very difficult bosses to fight. Plus, some ridiculously difficult challenges to do near it's end game. As far as Indie games go, it's one of the best I've played.
I'm about 3/4 done so far, and the difficulty is really ramping up. Exploring, and even just traversing from one point to another, is getting difficult. I agree about the combat. To me the game feels like a mix between hollow knight(which I freaking loved, can't wait for silksong), dead cells(without the rogue-like aspect) and the Ori games. That sounds like an awesome game, but it just feels like something is missing. I think part of it is the later game difficulty(I don't mind hard bosses, but I don't love dying 3 times in a row due to enemy spam when I'm just trying to explore an area, or even just get from point A to point B. Being frozen in place, and having a brief animation that sort of locks you in plave(and most importantly prevents you from dodging) while attacking is something that always bothers me in games like this. That is something hollow knight did right. This is one of those games that is largely about defense. You can't just spam enemies with your attacks while taking damage. Not only are you stuck with a limited amount of health and healing prayers, but those white flowers that restore a healing prayer are rare late in the game, and theres no way(at least that I've found so far) to increase your health between respite besides those flowers(and I suppose the relics that give you an extra healing prayer, though Those take up 3 or 4 relic slots.) The map also kinda sucks. You can't place markers/reminders, and there is no info at all about the room you're in except a rectangle showing you(approximately) the shape and size of the room, and the exits. I guess the red dots showing exits is a good thing, and the room turning brown when you've collected everything is a good feature. It may be due to the fact that I've played a bunch of metroidvanias in the past couple years, but despite how beautiful this game looks, I still get a very "meh" feeling from it.
I wait for a sale or the physical copy to release. The game looks really good though but I’m playing like 3 other games, and have like 20 on the back burner.
Really like the visuals, theme and music but this is the 2nd review I watch which speaks about "its difficult" and this is where I am out. I like to chill and not get stressed out while I play my games.
I have played both Hollow Knight and Ender Lillies. And for me the winner is Ender Lilies. It's more like Dark Souls than Hollow Knight is and that is a win. Also dodging is better than it is in Hollow Knight. Plus Hollow Knight is a f*cking nightmare on mouse and keyboard whereas in Ender Lilies mouse and keyboard controls aren't bad at all.
I dunno why but I've always heard this to be the case where Hollow Knight was significantly better on controller and Ender Lilies on M&K, but I found it to be the opposite personally. I did shift my Hollow Knight keybindings toward the upper half of the keyboard rather than lower rows but I kept all their orientations relative to one another and did well enough with that. I didn't try controller until after completing the game but thought the movement and specifically pulling directional attacks while moving/jumping to be more clunky on controller. Then with Ender Lilies I noticed they used very similar keybindings as Hollow Knight and I shifted those up in the same manner but when I tried controller just to check it out early in the game I found that more agreeable and used that through out.
So happy that this is coming to ps4 Edit: So does anyone know how to purchase this game on ps4? I can't find it in the PS store and I can't find a physical copy anywhere online. Do I need ps plus or something?
Gameplay aside, I feel this kind of premise is being overused at this point. Light vs dark, last of your kind, purifying an evil corruption, and metroidvania. So many games have come out with this theme lately and I'd like to see more original ideas.
Its been overused since time immemorial. We just get more done with the concept with age and exposure to more media using the concept. And no, you won't get original ideas. You get different ideas distancing itself from the current trend (or reiterating and/or evolving the existing trend).
UGH! When is the "souls" trend gonna end... Every single game is the fuckin same! Although, this game has a uniqueness that I do really like. But I am not a fan of dying 100 times and repeating shit over and over and over... I understand that it takes mastering and the idea is to get familiar with enemies and whatever, but even then, the slightest little thing kills you! Its not a mere challenge, it just gets annoying.... despite this, ender lilies is actually pretty good. One thing I am a huge fan of is classic RPG stuff. I love having to grind to get stronger. It just feels more fulfilling
It looks beautiful but it's almost double the price of Hollow Knight, which is surely a better game. I will probably pick this up quite some time down the road when it's on sale.
@@vazazell5967 I also dont think saying hollow knight is the "better game" works well here. Their both meteoidvanias sure but they feel entirely different from one another. And I'll add i think the price being higher is worth it given how gorgeous everything looks.
@@mikehunt3420 I dont think thats relevant to the quality of Emder Lilies. And were acting like a game being 4 years old is like saying its really old in comparison. If HK was say...from 2009 i could see an argument to be made. But 4 years isn't a long time.
@@Shaathurray I thought the same thing as I typed the comment. My implication is that HK has made a lasting mark on the genre as a whole, raising the bar. Im not the biggest metroidvania fan but i went and bought both HK and Ender lillies shortly after making that comment. I’m excited to say the least.
No. You can't modify/upgrade attributes like an RPG or make different specialized builds. You can change spirits to do different types of attacks and equip relics for different boosts and that's it.
@@cogigo thats fine. mediocre means the level designer didn't do bad level design. I prefer mediocre than straight up terrible barely functioning level design. NES games will teach you to appreciate games simply not being bad.
The gameplay was decent and fun, but the actual story and setting felt way too derivative/generic. Like I was looking at someone mashing together concepts from Dark Souls and Hollow Knight into a good tasting but unmemorable meatloaf. I beat it yesterday, 100% to be specific, and yet I still could barely tell you any specifics about any of the boss fights. And the red flash before enemy attacks really hurts its memorability because instead of watching and learning attack animations to survive I'm just training myself to dodge when I see red. I'd personally give it a 7.8/10 for being a well put together and presented game but lacking a true hook to keep me WANTING to explore the game. At the start, before I realized what was going on, I was more invested. As the story was revealed I found myself less and less interested.
If you like metroidvanias you probably will like it and it's a safe bet. If you aren't really into metroidvanias it's really not a must play game and waiting for sale sounds good. It depends. All I can say is that the game offers quality. The art, the music and the atmosphere are top notch and the difficulty is in general fair.

PS Plus squad?
Looks like a mix of Child of Light + Odin's Sphere + Hollow Knight
And Jojo (Stands) and Dark Souls and yada yada etc... Things are just repeating over and over if like the matrix is broke.

*braveheart voice* forrrrrr the algorithm!
Insatiable beast
Playing it now. Loving it. Although I haven't played Hollow Knight yet as you mentioned in the review - I'll do that next.
Hollow Knight is excellent. Large map, some tricky/challenging items to find/reach, tough enemies and some very difficult bosses to fight. Plus, some ridiculously difficult challenges to do near it's end game. As far as Indie games go, it's one of the best I've played.
Hollow Salt and Sanctuary Knight? Seems legitimate
Not only are you stuck with a limited amount of health and healing prayers, but those white flowers that restore a healing prayer are rare late in the game, and theres no way(at least that I've found so far) to increase your health between respite besides those flowers(and I suppose the relics that give you an extra healing prayer, though Those take up 3 or 4 relic slots.)
The map also kinda sucks. You can't place markers/reminders, and there is no info at all about the room you're in except a rectangle showing you(approximately) the shape and size of the room, and the exits. I guess the red dots showing exits is a good thing, and the room turning brown when you've collected everything is a good feature.
It may be due to the fact that I've played a bunch of metroidvanias in the past couple years, but despite how beautiful this game looks, I still get a very "meh" feeling from it.
blud you might be colorblind… it’s def a yellow gold color when the room is clear
The first boss struck me as being heavily inspired by Vicar Amelia. The fight was virtually the same outside of gameplay differences
My biggest complaint… I hate ARPG side scrollers that damage you from touching the enemy. Just always feels clunky to me
Short and sweet review! Good job! subscribed.
Fun Metroid venia. Totsly worth a playthrough if you like the genre.
I'd call this a NieRVania because of the haunting music and monster vibes.
Thats not a bug sir! Finding the priestesses makes ur prayer heal More health, dousnt give you more charges! On the items do that !
I disagree with some points in this review but it's a great review nonetheless
3:30 not a bug. It increases hiw much health you restore, not the amount of times you can restore.
I'm getting castlevania: symphony of the night vibes from thia game, and I'm loving it
Same thing I was thinking
There is a misunderstanding. When you pick up the prayer+ items, it is increasing the healing power of each prayer, not the number of prayers.
So happy that this is coming to ps4
Edit: So does anyone know how to purchase this game on ps4? I can't find it in the PS store and I can't find a physical copy anywhere online. Do I need ps plus or something?
It is listed on the PS4 Store now, it was just added recently.
@@melissafaust342 I know, I just got it... Apparently there was an issue with the port so the date got pushed. Thanks anyway.
Very thorough review. I really appreciate this.
music reminds me of steller blade
For me?
*The only thing that makes this game stand out from its counterparts is the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack.*
Seem to get a bloodborne feel from this. Going to have to check it out.
helpful, straight to the point review.
Wait so the priestesses wish increases the stocks for healing? I thought they just increased the healing amount. I had no idea this was a bug
It is not a bug. What ur showing on screen in more healing with 1 prayer. To get more prayers u need relics
North is one of the top soundtracks in this game
Gameplay aside, I feel this kind of premise is being overused at this point. Light vs dark, last of your kind, purifying an evil corruption, and metroidvania. So many games have come out with this theme lately and I'd like to see more original ideas.
Its been overused since time immemorial. We just get more done with the concept with age and exposure to more media using the concept. And no, you won't get original ideas. You get different ideas distancing itself from the current trend (or reiterating and/or evolving the existing trend).
I'm just happy that metroidvanias are in right now. It's been my favorite genre forever. And now we're actually getting a lot of them released.
Looks pretty nice, I may give it a try
This reminds me of that iron tails game with the rats
Looks so pretty!! Reminds me of Salt & Sanctuary - I absolutely loved that game!!
Which game is better or has more replayability?
This game is hella good
Those priestesses wishes actually make your healing spell more effective I'm pretty sure, not extra heals
Very nice, just bought it for Xbox. :) Out today!
Interesting looking game. Good review
I've only defeated two bosses in my first session and now I want a sequel! :D
2:37 that's not a bug it's intentional game design
thanks for including the price.
Part of PS Plus August 2024.
She's like Aisling from Gigantic.
i enjoyed the story,to each is own i quess.
I honestly don't know whether I preferred this game or Hollow Knight. It is just that good.
Looks like this will fill the void that hollow knight left
17hours of game play ? Usually I have to double that for my sloped and floaty brain
Hollow Knight is the one being unreasnably cheap, but it reuses a lot of quite simple art assets and was made by way smaller team.
@@vazazell5967 I also dont think saying hollow knight is the "better game" works well here. Their both meteoidvanias sure but they feel entirely different from one another.
And I'll add i think the price being higher is worth it given how gorgeous everything looks.
@@Shaathurray HK is also 4 years older
@@mikehunt3420 I dont think thats relevant to the quality of Emder Lilies. And were acting like a game being 4 years old is like saying its really old in comparison.
If HK was say...from 2009 i could see an argument to be made. But 4 years isn't a long time.
@@Shaathurray I thought the same thing as I typed the comment. My implication is that HK has made a lasting mark on the genre as a whole, raising the bar. Im not the biggest metroidvania fan but i went and bought both HK and Ender lillies shortly after making that comment. I’m excited to say the least.
Looks pretty cool.
wow I'm early
I got this in my recommendations, I ain't even subbed to Escapist
So she's a stand user then?
Honestly, hella momodora rutm vibes from the trailer if anyone played that game
2:38 that is not healing charges that is healing power + you only get more charges through relics
I can’t see it in ps store
This looks so much like salt & sanctuary holy fuck.
Does this game have rpg elements?!? Yiu made no mention of this!
No. You can't modify/upgrade attributes like an RPG or make different specialized builds. You can change spirits to do different types of attacks and equip relics for different boosts and that's it.
For the algorithm
Reminds me of TIMESPINNER
It looks like a mix between Hollow Knight and Bloodborne.
You forgot that this is also on Xbox
Anything similar to hollow knight IM IN
I'll give it a try babe
Thanks sweetie
It looks like Elden ring Dave the diver and under tale
YESSSSS
So hollow knight without the distinctly polished game feel. Buy on sale gotcha.
given the theme and lore, sounds more fitting to compare it to Momodora
@@Jinra321 pretty much the same story yeah.
Also the leveldesign/layouts is/are pretty mediocre.
@@cogigo thats fine. mediocre means the level designer didn't do bad level design. I prefer mediocre than straight up terrible barely functioning level design. NES games will teach you to appreciate games simply not being bad.
@@cogigo mediocre? did you even saw that puzzle lift room in the twin spires? Or some of the insanely tucked away secrets? Level design is steallar
Volume on this video is so low -_-
Should I get it or wait for a sale?
If you like metroidvanias you probably will like it and it's a safe bet. If you aren't really into metroidvanias it's really not a must play game and waiting for sale sounds good. It depends. All I can say is that the game offers quality. The art, the music and the atmosphere are top notch and the difficulty is in general fair.
Interesting game
Art design is beautiful. Don't love the idea of playing as a 5 year old child though.
Well, can feel that but the girl is just the premise. Spirits attack and deal damage not the girl.
