it looks like the unused stadium models somehow had all the objects shoved to the origin. it would be interesting to see modders recreate the stages by pulling the assets back to their intended offsets
the way some of the unused models have these creepy damaged and corrupted texture gives me some authentic creepypasta-esque vibes. just imagine playing this game leisurely and then suddenly it freaks out and swaps out the textures like that. absolute nightmare fuel

I think the alternate colours aren't for multiple players choosing the same character, but rather for a scrapped team selection. So, purple mario looks like wario's colours, so perhaps you could choose Wario's team as Mario in an earlier concept; so character's outfit colours would need to match the selected team. Maybe instead of sidekicks, you'd have a full team of "main characters"; and the plan would be that the whole team would adopt the colours of the captain. I don't know; I didn't work on it - but I think that a team system is more likely than multiple players choosing the same character.
The beta visuals make me think that the game originally was going for a Mario tennis style, but at some point during development, a Nintendo exec showed up and asked "But what if it was edgy?"
Nah Mario Strikers was always supposed to be edgy, the concept art for Mario and Peach’s costumes goes so hard. It seems that during development it was oscillating between the classic style and the edgy style, and it was only by the end of development that the edgy style won.
I imagine the unique sidekicks were removed due to how time consuming it'd be to make and test them for every character as opposed to universal sidekicks everyone uses.
Makes since, but you have to admit, they would have been pretty cool though. I could imagine Mario and Luigi having similar sidekicks, just Luigi's would be taller and wearing green clothing.

I'd like to point that there's a later build in a slighly later multi-game demo disc that can also have its demo state disabled the same way, it's quite a bit closer to the final build, but contains some interesting differences as far as as I remember: A placeholder intro with it's music unfinished/missing some intruments. aparently based on a in-between both demos build, some incomplete animations on the character's expressions and also that the goal announcer says the sidekicks' names when they score (though a few of the audio clips cut off near the end). When played on console, this build will crash if you attempt to save/create a file so it's best to play with no memcard inserted or emulated, but on Dolphin it'll work iirc. Also in Dolphin for the old intro to not glitch visually it needs the texture cache set to middle or safe. Awesome video btw! There was quite some I didn't know yet about both early and final unused content here.

Yeah, even Camelot allows more original characters in their recent games, which is hilarious since they’re sports games that don’t need plots. Sure, they’re only like 3 original bosses at a time, but that’s almost 3x as many unique characters than the ones introduced in recent PM lol (although Origami King tries bypassing the restrictions by making characters with no eyes?)
It's clear that the newspaper aesthetic was somewhat reincorporated for Strikers Charged's Cup mode... As each character gets their own personalized short descriptions after each match during a full run of the Striker Cup, as if it was being covered by the "news"...

I always love learning about this stuff, but I want to dwell Medic Bones (and by extention Dr. Drybones, Dr. Boo, Etc.) Would a undead doctor be good? They're dead, so they most likely wouldn't know about a living breathing body. But on the other hand, they definitely know their way around bones and rotting tissue... Man, Mario is weird.
At 4:17, it seems that the font used for the "Mario Soccer League" text at the top is the same or at least extremely similar to the font used in Splatoon 1, which is neat to me lol.
I recon it’s possible to sort of recover the old unused hell holes which are the stadiums, by moving a few assets around. I’d start with the Parakoopa one.

The large prism is likely just primitive geometry that isn't necessary and the true view is from below, so the ball would be partially visible through the ground plane (maybe re-textured to be bursting through a wall thanks to extreme kick force?) with title screen text placed around to add additional depth.

Whilst I really like the uncovered character models for sidekicks and medical Dry Bones, some of the early debug menu offers an intriguing insight into a side of this game that we could only speculate on. Judging by the fact the game is called "Mario Soccer league" in some textures and a lot of the renders show Mario in his normal attire, I get the feeling the game was initially pitched as a more standard style Mario sports spinoff similar to Toadstool Tour and Power Tennis. The devs probably did some early stuff with the characters in normal outifts and standard football play controls, until it evolved into the more violent and gritty style Strikers is now famous for.
You playing A Hat In Time music over the heavily fragmented stadium models made me think "wow, some of these layouts look like they would make fun playgrounds for a collect-a-thon protagonist" Mario Stadium is straight-up built like Mafia Town or Whomp's Fortress
If i remember correctly from another video on Super Mario Striker's development (Thanks Beta 64) The unused Twister item does have some kind of remnants left behind that included lightning flashes. I think that the Twister item was actually reworked into the entirety of the Thunder Island stage from Mario Strikers Charged. But thats just my speculation. Also thanks for covering one of my favorite games!
That fragmented state you speak of is move shit to world origin so when you import it into the engine it is not off in space. You could piece it back together if you wanted to. Basically this is how we make game models. We make the whole scene so we can have a good feel of what we doing sometimes it is just one prop but with the stadiums above it is a lot of objects. Then we move everything to world origin making sure the center point/origin/whatever your program calls it, is in the apt place etc. Then we export as FBX or .DAE then we import into game engine then, we go through each object and retexture them, then we place them into the game world where we had them before moving to world origin. If you don't the game engine will just place the origin at world origin, and place the object off in bumfuck egypt. So when moving the object you would be moving it based around world origin of the engine but the object would be displaced if you will to wherever the hell it was which is a nightmare to work with to say the least.
Cylinder sphere: this is a two piece collision object, using the cylinder for handling collision with the various players and the sphere for handling collision with the ground.
My theory... the training stadium was originally for a practise mode of some kind or a placeholder for mario stadium before it was made into pipeline central

Some ideas that were scrapped for the original actually DID make into the sequel, "Charged" such as you can actually visibly see bruises, burns, injuries, etc. on everyone depending on how much they've been roughed up on the court, detailed headlines that are different for each character and mode show up before and after a match, and some stadium ideas appear to have been reworked and properly put in, sadly all 3 of these things are currently absent from "Battle League" though (I say currently ONLY because they have plans for MAJOR updates in the future, I know they've only officially announced additional characters and stadiums although I'd be surprised if they didn't add more gear to wear as well, but when it comes to Nintendo you never know they COULD be willing to add additional features as well).
Most of those unused claps resemble "We Will Rock You". I totally understand why they would use it because it is one of the most, if not, the most used chant at any given sporting event, but I also understand why they would take it out of the retail release because they don't want to deal with surviving members of Queen, their managers, or their record label. I know for a fact Queen songs in terms of licensing do not come cheap and using that stomp clap chant alone could be considered copyright infringement. Well, they all sound like that song except for the last one, but the last one is heavily reminiscent of the clap commonly used during baseball games, usually the organist plays along. I'm not sure if that's copyrighted, but I'm sure Nintendo was not taking any risks. After all, the guys at Nintendo are big fans of copyright protection and would be gigantic hypocrites if they broke someone else's copyright.
It would have been interesting for the captains to have their own unique sidekicks that weren't just generic koopas or birdos, it just shows how much effort was put into the models and that different characters would be introduced. Maybe that would have been the first time to see a child like version of Mario but I guess the higher ups at Nintendo (especially nowadays) were like "We can't use new characters because we'd lose money if we were too ambitious not to mention these characters might not even be that popular." It's a shame that Nintendo was ambitious anyway with the GameCube but it just wasn't as successful as the PS2 at the time.
Honestly that little smiley face that gets angry at low framerates has gotta be the BEST dev tool I've ever heard of, 'cause it's a good tool, but it's still kinda silly/goofy, like yeah they made a tool to help ensure the framerate is good but they still had fun doing it.
I honestly wish the Mario games utilized more cartoony humans in their games, sort of getting tired of how they keep avoiding trying to expand the world/lore, especially when it pretty much ignores Mario's history in a way. Like, I understand wanting to try to tidy things up, but I can't help but feel they're pretty much throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
i think the mode that removes a bunch of stuff in the final build may heaven been for retail demos back in the day, as that would make it be a fun snippet for kids to play and ask their parents to get it for them
This is a total guess, but I could see the debug cylinder ball being used as a say to make sure the rolling animation is done right, since it seems much easier to visually track both the speed and direction of the rolling with kind of an irregular shape like that.

My somewhat educated guess is that either the map format changed or some common reference was removed so everything just defaulted to null/0,0,0.

It would have been interesting for the captains to have their own unique sidekicks that weren't just generic koopas or birdos, it just shows how much effort was put into the models and that different characters would be introduced. Maybe that would have been the first time to see a child like version of Mario but I guess the higher ups at Nintendo (especially nowadays) were like "We can't use new characters because we'd lose money if we were too ambitious not to mention these characters might not even be that popular." It's a shame that Nintendo was ambitious anyway with the GameCube but it just wasn't as successful as the PS2 at the time.
Cars the videogame for the GameCube is one of the best licensed games but its pretty niche and I wish to know so much more about its beta.
If we ever get another Gigaleak, i would love to see Beta stuff from Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, and this game get revealed

Honestly that little smiley face that gets angry at low framerates has gotta be the BEST dev tool I've ever heard of, 'cause it's a good tool, but it's still kinda silly/goofy, like yeah they made a tool to help ensure the framerate is good but they still had fun doing it.

I just got my copy of Mario strikers a couple of days ago and I see why so many people love it
I honestly wish the Mario games utilized more cartoony humans in their games, sort of getting tired of how they keep avoiding trying to expand the world/lore, especially when it pretty much ignores Mario's history in a way. Like, I understand wanting to try to tidy things up, but I can't help but feel they're pretty much throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

i think the mode that removes a bunch of stuff in the final build may heaven been for retail demos back in the day, as that would make it be a fun snippet for kids to play and ask their parents to get it for them

This is a total guess, but I could see the debug cylinder ball being used as a say to make sure the rolling animation is done right, since it seems much easier to visually track both the speed and direction of the rolling with kind of an irregular shape like that.
What I'm getting from this video is that the US team had a bunch of ideas that would have created a GOATed game and Nintendo went "make it mid".
