I’ve made 3 King sized Hawaiian quilts and this is a great example. Well worth saving.

Isn't it amazing? This is from a Lessons from an Old Quilt video. I bought the quilt at an auction.

I just received a quilt that my Hawaiian great grandmother sewed approximately 80-90 years ago. It has some yellowing. I’d be interested to know how to wash it and care for it.

That is awesome! I love that you have one of your great grandmother's quilts. ❤️
I am always reluctant to offer old quilt cleaning advice because I don't know the makeup of your quilt (silk? wool batting? etc.) and wouldn't want to inadvertently damage your quilt with bad advice. For my quilts, I always start slow with a mild cleaning solution like a small amount of white vinegar in a lot of water and then get more aggressive, especially if I am unsure. I always hand wash my quilts and lay them outside to dry (I don't hang them to dry when they are wet because of the added weight). My favorite detergent for my quilts is Biz from Walmart. Hope this helps!

I am no expert, but my best trick for yellowing is sun drying. Definitely don't let the sun hurt it-- but a judicious amount of sunshine is my favorite stain fighting secret!

Beautiful ❤. But I for one don't think you ought to touch , change the original stitching. 🙏 Check with a conservator first.

I understand. I am an old quilt collector, however, and really believe that if they are not museum quality (this one is not), quilts are intended to be used as the maker intended. Since I will be using this quilt, I want to repair it. Check out my Lessons from an Old Quilt video series. I have over 70 videos featuring old quilts, including one that is from the 1850s.

I love it and I love that you are going to reinforce the fraying bits. I know you have the talent to do it well and I know that you will actually use the quilt. I don’t remember seeing a full video on this one so I’m going to search for it.

@@SewtheDistance I found it right after I finished that comment. I learned a few things. I also found a couple that I had missed or just wanted to watch again. You are so talented.
