OH MY GOD... That Van Norman mill makes my heart palpitate... 😍😍😍 Also I don't understand why this channel doesn't have a million subscribers. You are doing, hands down, some of the coolest projects on UA-cam. Your gear hobber is amazing and every hobbyist should be looking at that and realizing just how much is possible with a little bit of math, hard work, and determination.
Just stumbled across your page this morning & see you have made collecting many hard to find Van Norman items seem easy - till needing gears. Yet, making gears seems what you do! Keep up the good work.
I have a feeling your will be lovely as well. I hope the rebuilding goes well. I just brought in a 22L that needs quite a bit of work, so I’ll keep busy!
Might sound weird but this was one sexy video. (Maybe it's just the music, lol). Always enjoy watching your content. The weather is finally warming up, so it's time to get back out to the shop soon and have some fun! Thanks for sharing!
To get rid of the the ringing/chatter you could try shortening the shaft the gear sits on and suck in the tailstock spindle all the way. Those might not be possible but what would probably work is wrapping the shaft in heavy rubber or a rubber tube filled with sand. The big aluminium (?) washers you have up agains the gear must help too. Great work !
@@Panzax1 if you are lucky it changes the harmonics enough to eliminate chatter or "ring". helps to deadens noise like putting your hand on a bell, or putting chains around an anvil
Change gears and index gears don’t see much speed and load, so soft steel works well. There are a lot of old lathes and mini lathes that have aluminum or plastic gears. I just prefer steel for the stuff I do.
there are a million sparrows outside your workshop screaming ...yes what do you want?? I finally realised why I was looking at a hand powered shaper...gears...gears of all things, if I can make gears I can make all manner of machines to help my bid for world domination..well alright workshop domination but atleast I now know why I was looking so thanks for that
@@thomasstover6272 that gear cutter would drive me scatty lol I been trying to find the shaper I was looking at again....I may be gone some time lol Or if it gets really bad I might have a bash at making one

Thanks for your extremely kind comments. I do enjoy this kind of work!
So Jesus master you did a great job love to see more 😊

Yup, gears are a thing, Brock…but I think I’ve got a thing going for Van Norman machinery, too. Thanks for checking in!
Looking for a slotting head, in case you know a guy who knows a guy….
Incredible work!
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful job as always mate
Thank you! Cheers, Matty!
I have a 2L Van Norman that I am rebuilding, absolutely lovely machine. Sadly, mine isn't as pretty as yours , but soon.

Glad you’re getting back in the shop! Have fun and make cool things!
Nice job on those
Thanks 👍
Very impressive work! Next you'll build a Fellows type gear shaper.
It could happen…thanks!

Noise cancelling headphones. Saying I listen to Metallica would be a good joke…but I’d rather listen to street repairs. Smooth jazz for me.
try sticking some magnets on the face of the gear do deaden the resonance
@@DTwo88 I've never heard of that trick. Can you explain how it works ?

That band saw is a thing of beuty
It’s like me…homely but fun
…to watch, in small doses.
Nice video. Do these need to be hardered ? Cheers

Have you found The Potting Shed Workshop? Robert has a series on shaper gear making.

Nide work... nice.. what metal did you use
All steel…some 1018, some 8620, some 12L14.
