11:20 the reason you see a low voltage going to the starter is because the starter is in a locked rotor condition and draws excessive amps while NOT turning! Similar low voltage can be measured @ the Pos of the battery when the solenoid/relay is engaged !

My car ate a piston once. The valves jumped time by 3 notches. It accelerated like crap but got up to speed eventually. I was halfway home on an 80-mile trip when the #2 piston disintegrated. Scarred the cylinder wall a bit. I replaced it with a junkyard piston and got another 8 months out of it before it went again. That time it took out the cylinder wall. I replaced the engine at right around 100,000 with an engine that had about 120,000 on it. That went another 45,000 miles before it developed a knock. Once I tore it down, I figured out it was the flex plate rattling on the torque converter. My pistons were completely sludged up though, and the oil pump needed a new seal. About $800 later it's all back together and running like new or better. Yes, the rod bearings will be fine, but the cylinder wall will be toast. You may have gotten lucky on the valves (I'm at 37:16 in).
OMG. I've pulled apart and rebuild a few engines in 50+ years but never seen one do that before. Just incredible. Good luck putting this back together again, although by the looks of the damage, a replacement engine might be a lot less hassle !
Cub Cadet's engineering , serviceability and metallurgy kinda speak for themselves in this job. A machine designed for rugged outdoor duty needs to be made better than that and it needs to be more fixable too.
Agreed. An engine shouldn't simply blow up after so little mileage and so few hours of operation. The engine failure looks to me like a manufacturing defect and also due to sloppy engineering. If I had been in the old couple's position, I would seriously have considered suing the manufacturer for selling me goods that weren't of merchantable quality.
Yes,but he always does the wrong steps first! You don't spend time testing solenoids and starters before pulling the plug! Or try starting, checking for spark, etc. before testing compression. He does this EVERY VIDEO.
Cub Cadet is One of the 8 brand names out there made at the Chinese company of Hysun (spelling) I forgot all there names now, but back in 2020 we bought a brand new Massimo and had it shipped to out door in Floo’da from Texas for $5,900 …!!
Great to see an honest teardown of engine that we unlucky mortals usually find ourselves working on (ie not one tweak and its working again)....reckon that engine was at full revs when that piston destructed,no old people riding that then.
Well, one thing I have learned from watching your videos is that I would never buy a non-running side by side. I don't think I have ever seen you get one that was simple to work on, and most have been a royal pain. My hat is off to you for your perseverance with these machines.

My brother was the auto mechanic, Cadillac, BMW, you name it, he could fix it even worked on diesel engines. However, me, I don’t know very little about the engine of a vehicle… however, even I know that a piston does not look like that, should not have been destroyed like that which is totally totally crazy. Now, 45 years ago, I did help a friend take apart his car and put new rings in it. And it was an activity that I actually enjoyed. I wished I had stuck with it, because, if nothing else I would’ve loved to of had the knowledge that you do. I can see where working on a vehicle of any kind can be habit for me.
I absolutely DESPISE when I see people connect a TONE of crap to the battery. Get a junction box and put it to the side and run a cable down to it. You can properly fuse it AND it looks neat. I just dont get why people insist on doing it this way.
Love the channel, been following a LOT of re-builds. A little advice from an electronics engineer - Don't continually try to turn the motor over when the starter is locked up......you'll only end up burning out the starter and/or the solenoid. Also, a clue that either the battery is knackered or the starter was locked up was the backlighting on the clocks going dim when you turned the key.......a lot of current flowing out the battery and a large voltage drop.
Why is everyone so afraid of fixing anything these days? SMH. I'd have bought it and retrofitted whatever motor I wanted if I had to. Rebuilds are a cakewalk. Folks need to LEARN some things these days.😂 These kinds of videos are very demonstrative of the engineering that goes into a piece of equipment like this.
Mine went, supposedly the rod bent, I have a complete engine I’ll sell you if you’re interested. I just bought a new one and replaced it. But I have everything you need.
Joe upon discovering @ 31:19 the piston had left the building, "What the heck" I feel at this point it's justifiably appropriate to say, WHAT THE FUCK!🤣 Apparently the grandkids were given the keys. 😂 After the many years of viewing this channel, this has got to be the finest episode that I have had the pleasure of consuming.🤣
Absolutely unbelievable!! Never seen anything like that! Looks like intentional sabotage or a prank! That gudgeon pin, that piston,, no way that would happen just by an engine seizure!! Look forward to seeing the rest of the repair!! Nice video!!
My guess how this happened was the decompression was activated, and it was maybe run downhill, or used as an engine brake, maybe dragged for trying to bump start it, but I would suggest high rev rpm, no compression, piston let go, likely why the pin, connecting rod and crank is all fairly intact. I would be curious to know if the bent valve was the one connected to the decompression mechanism.
700 for top end, 900ish with crank and cam. You're gonna be $5k into this all said and done. It looks like a nice machine though overall and I bet another older couple could buy it up from you once it's completed.......I did this to an LS1 v8 one time, out of nowhere it exploded under throttle (someone had been in the engine before me) and it put a hole in the block and left a trail of Pennzoil for 300 feet. It was quite the glorious exit.
My brother was the auto mechanic, Cadillac, BMW, you name it, he could fix it even worked on diesel engines. However, me, I don’t know what damn thing about the engine of a vehicle. Now, 45 years ago, I did help a friend take apart his brothers car and we put new head on it and replaced all the rings and, I can’t really remember what else we did but, it was fun. I enjoyed it, and I wished I had stuck with it, because, if nothing else I would’ve loved to of had the knowledge that you do. I can see where working on a vehicle of any kind can be habit for me.

Joe, I had a Suzuki dealership with my dad in the 70's we replaced rods ourselves using the shop press to press apart installing new rod and bearing and pressing back together then using a straight edge making the counter weights even never had a problem u might try it. We did it on all the racing bikes as well.
Looks like someone lefted a few things out when telling you about that engine. You could always run it Freddy Flintstone style in the meantime. Well the good news is it can be fixed with time and bit of money but you can get it done... You sure do find you some good one's...
Ive never seen that. Dropped piston will keep it from cranking. The good news is that it might have broke and the motor just had a few revolutions, enough to bugger the spark plug and no other damage.
When you pulled the head off and there was no piston I cried with laughter and nearly fell off my armchair. How is that even possible. Might pay to look for an engine.
I haven’t heard very many people boasting on Cub Cadet products, quite the opposite in fact. After watching this nightmare, I don’t see myself ever buying anything sold under that brand.
I believe the term "GRENADE" would best describe the crankcase here ! I blew up a 327 Chevy engine when I was 16. I missed 2nd. gear, and the ABRUPT SOUND of Silence after the LOUDEST BANG is hard to describe... I had a 3 mile walk home to think about it though. And YES, the bottom end looked very similar to this engine. ☹😥😱
Could be. But with the information given in the video we know that that the average speed of this machine was no more than 8 mph (1664 miles divided by 201 hrs), this math doesn’t account for idle time either so I would expect it to be less.
That's funny you say that. Cause I thought the same thing. Cause when he took off the first valve cover it was missing a bolt. So someone was definitely in there for sure. But yeah when he said the piston was gone I said someone definitely took it apart and put it back together hahahaha
Looks more like the old couple had a grand son! Lol. In my opinion, that type of catastrophic failure we were wide open. The connecting rod showed high heat marks at the wrist pin area. I guess if I knew much about this, you would be watching my videos. Lol. Sorry it was so far gone.

That is really unbelievable! Can't say I've ever heard of an engine digesting a piston. 🤣 Please keep the content coming! I have to say that even though I don't ride a motorcycle, ATV or UTV, I have really learned a lot about small engines from watching you patiently and methodically tackle each project. I have to also admire your mid-western good manners and patience having never heard a swear word on your channel. If it was me, you would have only heard minutes of bleeps during the inevitable setbacks. Great job!
My father was a JD diesel mechanic his entire career… as with you he had a brilliant mechanical mind. I did receive that gene but your mechanical hunting skills are like his were…you folks are amazing
11:20 the reason you see a low voltage going to the starter is because the starter is in a locked rotor condition and draws excessive amps while NOT turning! Similar low voltage can be measured @ the Pos of the battery when the solenoid/relay is engaged !
Stopped in water crossing!
I'm 70 and have been a mechanic most of my life I NEVER thought the piston would be gone hahahaha I bet the guy just tried to start the motor over and over again forget the knocking sounds until the piston stuck under the crank ,
greetings from Serbia, I follow every video of yours, all the best, and I do it myself, I would recommend you to pay more attention to cleaning and washing parts, meticulousness is 90% of the job
You're absolutely right!
Typical HiSun Chinese motor. Good luck with that one. You have a great channel that promotes the small engine trades. Love it.
A perfect video to start you on your way to 500k! Thanks for letting me come along for the ride.
I would offer a guess - the Piston had a defect in manufacture and fragmented rather than ground away - this explain no metal dust and also your findings.
I've always wanted a utv but all the plastic parts and problems I've seen on your channel has changed my mind I'll just keep using my trx 😮
If you can find a low mile bike built before the 2000s that will be the best bike ever all this newer stuff is garbage.
Any update on this machine?
Same, I'm kinda curious🤷♂️
Wasted..
Bro a perfect use for this things is to pull the old engine and add a 600/ 1000cc sport bike engine that would be 10x more badass then any modern utv@@nebs888
Is there a second part to this?
Also waiting on 2nd part!
We've done several of those, top ends mostly, few bad cranks, 29:10 not a fan. Cub Cadet are not the easiest parts to get. Great vid, just bad memories for me and my apprentice. 😮
no chunks in oil, a change with some old oil before resale.
Joe, thank you for the content, you do a wonderful job explaining and exploring all of these projects! I am very grateful you are here doing this 🙏 -Justin from New Hampshire
Love that cheater bar! I am Enjoying watching you take apart the engine, and how you tested the parts. ❤❤
Wow Joe that thing is a showroom model, almost like a dealer sample.. so low miles and hours.. what a peach! Hopefully it's no biggie to get it running again the video is just a couple minutes in but man what a steal on it, even if you do need to do some engine work.. that's your thing!!
Edit: Whoa!! That was TOTALLY UNEXPECTED OF A FIND!! Holy COW!!!
I am by no means a mechanic but your video was outstanding. Now i know why I am willing to pay someone with experience to fix my stuff. Well done.
Unfortunately, that's how the cookie crumbles at times. Love your videos and the detailed breakdowns, repairs as well as the assembly process. You motivated me to purchase a 2006 YZ450F for $800... lol. I have about $750 into it... waiting for the parts to arrive. Keep kicking ass man!
amen! lol
Little rip..half the damn seat is gone😂
My thoughts exactly, sounds like a bunch of grandkids.
OMG. I've pulled apart and rebuild a few engines in 50+ years but never seen one do that before. Just incredible. Good luck putting this back together again, although by the looks of the damage, a replacement engine might be a lot less hassle !
Congrats on 400k Joe!!!
I love how you do one step at a time to find out what is wrong. Then you fix it!
Yes,but he always does the wrong steps first! You don't spend time testing solenoids and starters before pulling the plug! Or try starting, checking for spark, etc. before testing compression. He does this EVERY VIDEO.
Spark plugs and compression should be checked BEFORE any thing is bought! @@Mizman76
Cub Cadet is One of the 8 brand names out there made at the Chinese company of Hysun (spelling) I forgot all there names now, but back in 2020 we bought a brand new Massimo and had it shipped to out door in Floo’da from Texas for $5,900 …!!
Holy crap buddy! I'm 61 years old and I've seen everything but I've never seen a piston completely disintegrated. Wow
You've never seen a piston or rod get thrown? Must not deal with engines much, I had seen multiple before I was 18.
Great to see an honest teardown of engine that we unlucky mortals usually find ourselves working on (ie not one tweak and its working again)....reckon that engine was at full revs when that piston destructed,no old people riding that then.
It's probably something easy!
Geez, they got the mix off when casting that piston.
I always avoid vehicles driven by someones grandparents.
Wow! I am 53 years old and have never seen a piston do that. Crazy!
Well, one thing I have learned from watching your videos is that I would never buy a non-running side by side. I don't think I have ever seen you get one that was simple to work on, and most have been a royal pain. My hat is off to you for your perseverance with these machines.
I don’t think that is a problem, I would guess that it is intended that way. He is after all a small engine repair wizard.
@JakeDemuss90210 -- How many subscribers do you have on *your* channel? Yup -- that's what I thought. :(
@JakeDemuss90210 Then where would he draw his content from. Why would we watch the videos if not to run through the whatever the problem with is to getting whatever he is fixing to a working state again. I feel that if you want it to be a problem then it is for you. If you enjoy the process of finding out the problem or problems and fixing them, then why would you, care about how the creator creates. I enjoy Joes videos. Therefore do not care about his endeavors, right or wrong. They are enjoyable to me.
@JakeDemuss90210 I like his vids, if you don't then why not go somewhere else and watch their vids instead of complaining.
Thats crazy. Ive seen dropped skirts and cracked pistons but thats just insane.
Chinese engineering.
I absolutely DESPISE when I see people connect a TONE of crap to the battery. Get a junction box and put it to the side and run a cable down to it. You can properly fuse it AND it looks neat. I just dont get why people insist on doing it this way.
Ive been looking for a couple of yrs and this is my first time seeing so much carnage like this.
Never give up. You just dont quit. This is a real mechanic.
Love the channel, been following a LOT of re-builds.
A little advice from an electronics engineer - Don't continually try to turn the motor over when the starter is locked up......you'll only end up burning out the starter and/or the solenoid.
Also, a clue that either the battery is knackered or the starter was locked up was the backlighting on the clocks going dim when you turned the key.......a lot of current flowing out the battery and a large voltage drop.
starters and solenoids are cheap though so its not a big deal at all.
Incredible viewing. You definitely have a huge amount of perseverance and patience. I take my hat off to you.😊
Taking that hose off unlocked a hidden achievement based on the sound that came as soon as it detached :D
Love the videos!
Your new theme song lately. "I'd catch a grenade for ya" 😂
“Grandma used it to tote tulips around the yard” 😂 Yeah sure, judging from the dirt under motor it’s been mudded and rode hard
Previous owner;
"Older couple, lived on farm, low miles, low hours, driven on Sundays, quit while driving with no warning"
Suuuuuuuure.
lol
With ORV sticker on it. Grandma likes to dive on the sand dunes, but she never beat on it.
I can’t wait to watch the outcome of this. I hope you are able to finish this project and take some serious hot laps. 😊
Mine went, supposedly the rod bent, I have a complete engine I’ll sell you if you’re interested. I just bought a new one and replaced it. But I have everything you need.
Joe upon discovering @ 31:19 the piston had left the building, "What the heck" I feel at this point it's justifiably appropriate to say, WHAT THE FUCK!🤣
Apparently the grandkids were given the keys.
Looks like a piston circlip came out,&the gudgeon pin moved smashing the barrel lining& the piston exploded.
Wrist pin: don’t look at me.
I've seen alot of crazy stuff while fixing bikes and quads but no piston and then to find it in the bottom end that has to be a first.
It was quite the glorious exit.
this is now my favorite small engine repair channel!
''a episode'' from ''I do cars''?
My Jeep 4.0 has done that twice. Once on #5 cylinder and on #6. Good old chinesium pistons!
Congratulations on 400k subscribers!!!!
Great looking rig, now let's tear it apart! I Love Engine Out vids, but then I'm old. Again your patience and knowledge are amazing. You must have a better engine lying around. 400k Subs - BRAVO
You sure do find you some good one's...
lol! Freddy style!
WILMAA...!! 😂😂
Right? I was like, why are we seeing a wrist pin?!
Your "armchair" who the hell calls a chair an armchair😂
@@MidnightPolaris800An armchair mechanic of course! 😂😂😂
I haven’t heard very many people boasting on Cub Cadet products, quite the opposite in fact. After watching this nightmare, I don’t see myself ever buying anything sold under that brand.
Are they an American made machine?
The new cub cadets suck. The good ones are the old OG ih cub cadets. I'd never own any new "cub cadet" product
Designed and engineered by Cub Cadet, the Challenger series is manufactured by Hisun Motors Corp. at its factory in Chongqing, China.
It appears to be the same engine as the yamaha 660 those aren’t really known to be the most reliable but i’ve never seen one do this😅
Buttering my toast, listening
then I hear what the Heck, the whole piston is missing! I lost it lol.
😱😱😱😱 I've never seen it before .
i hope 'buttering my toast' is not a paraphrase.
Ya so funny. You have a terrible sense of humor
14:28 its ultra low carbon footprint.
there is no Spoon (Piston) a Matrix moment!
It's the age old story: A little old lady only drove it to church on Sundays.
What is going on with this machine now (3+ months later)? Are you fixing it or parting it out? I'm pretty curious what you've resolved to do
I don't think the older couple blew this up. This was ridden hard imo
Exactly. By the looks of all that caked mud under the engine bay my guess would be that the grandkids blew that thing up.
"the older couple". Haha..... Fiction
@@dezrtrat702 if you deduct the idle time (0 mph) wouldn't it make the average speed higher?
This is the best side by side troubleshooting video I've ever seen.
More like old couple bought it grand kids beat the hell out of it old couple got rid of it that's probably the real deal
Maybe, but we don't know this for a fact.
I was jealous when I seen your UTV you got for 3500 bucks. I'm not jealous anymore. Good luck😢
Looks more like the old couple had a grand son! Lol. In my opinion, that type of catastrophic failure we were wide open. The connecting rod showed high heat marks at the wrist pin area. I guess if I knew much about this, you would be watching my videos. Lol. Sorry it was so far gone.
DID YOU ALSO SEE HOW COOKED THE CRANK ITSELF WAS,AT THE MAIN ROD BEARING? WOW
@@georgetubbs8211 Yes sir! It was a hot tub party for sure.
That piston went full yeet! 😆
