    History of Hartlepool
We have put together a number of different articles detailing every aspect of Hartlepool history, from the originalOld Hartlepool to the ship building firms of Sir William Gray.
Hartlepool has a long proud history. Hartlepool was originally two towns, the ancient town of Old Hartlepool, known locally as the Headland, and the more recent West Hartlepool. They amalgamated in 1967 to form what is now the single entity known as Hartlepool.
Surrounded on three sides by the sea, the Magnesium Limestone headland or peninsula called the Heugh at Hartlepool is more familiarly known as Old Hartlepool.
Old Hartlepool is the original fishing village which existed before West Hartlepool. It is usually used to distinguish that part of the town from the ‘new’ town of West Hartlepool. West Hartlepool then became known as Hartlepool and Old Hartlepool, wishing to keep its separate identity, began to be known as the Headland!
Hartlepool may not always readily accept association with Teesside, it has its own natural harbour to the north of the river, but in recent centuries its industrial history has been very closely tied up with the River Tees.
In prehistoric times Hartlepool’s headland is thought to have been an isolated tidal island covered by thick forests. In the nineteenth century during excavation of the adjacent marshy area called the Slake, trunks of trees from the ancient forest were found embedded in the clay along with antlers and the teeth from deer that seem to have inhabited the area in large numbers many years ago.
Hartlepool forest is still recorded in existence in the thirteenth century. In fact the ancient Anglo Saxon name for Hartlepool was Heret eu meaning Stag Island which is a reference to either the stag’s head shape of the headland or perhaps an indication that the area may have been well inhabited by forest deer.
    Heugh Battery Museum.
Heugh Battery was one of three erected in 1860 to protect the fast-growing port of Hartlepool. Heugh and Lighthouse Battery were placed close by the lighthouse and armed with four and two 68pr smoothbore guns respectively. The third battery, Fairy Cove mounted three of the same weapons and was slightly further to the north at the end of the town moor.
The original battery was modified for three 64pr Rifled Muzzle Loading guns in the 1880s and then fell out of use with the introduction of breech loaders on hydropneumatic mounts in 1893. The lighthouse battery was reconstructed for one of these guns, a 6-inch Mk VI and a further two were placed in Cemetery Battery north of the town.
    Middleton Fishing Cabins.
The Hartlepool Smallcrafts Association was founded in the 1950s.
the cabins have been in middleton for over 70 yrs and keep being made to move which is not good for them and now after a recent move we lost many and many could not fit on the two current sites We hae 15 left. The futre is very precarious so we carry on fighting to save them and their memory
A group of cabin owners in Middleton, Hartlepool are at risk of losing their community after 70 years, as Hartlepool Borough Council says it can no longer afford to subsidise the lease.
The Middleton Cabins have been serving the community since the 1950s and in 2009 they were located on Ferry Road.
Last year, the owners were given a stay of execution to try and find alternative funding to plug the gap usually covered by the council as part of the lease with landowners, PD Ports.
The sheds are also home to 11 wild cats who are fed by the owners, some of whom spend the whole day “pottering” in their cabins, chatting to their friends and doing jobs.
The cabins have moved locations along the coast since they were built after the Second World War many times.

That's a great video. Very well filmed. It goes to show you don't always have to be flying high to get a great shot.

I enjoyed that very much. Was that a Military Museum with the Tanks and Guns? My Parents used to take me to visit an Aunt and Uncle at West Hartlepool in the late 40's and early 50's.

For a long, long time, Middleton was considered the closest island to the British coast as it was completely surrounded by water but only a few feet away. Forget the Isle of Wight's claims. It's five miles away (I think).

I was wondering if you license footage at all? We would love to use a clip on our clients website of the Hartlepool coast.
