"You're trying to watch The Smurfs? Did you see the one where Papa Smurf took a crutch and smashed the shit out of a guy with a red hat? Did ya see that one? You wanna see that one?" Classic scene. Loved this movie since I was a kid.
Ryan Spengler But...Papa Smurf WAS the one with the red hat!
To this day, when anyone I know gets a horrible sunburn I refer to it as a good base
@@neutron5000 You gotta do these things in stages.
My favorite was “Archie, get your ass up here right now!”
@@j.p.1214 Go try. I want to see you're brains splattered all over the street on the news
I watched Summer Rental, as well as The Great Outdoors, this week.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is Candy's best movie IMHO. However, The Great Outdoors is just awesome too.
@@dats3 PTA will always be my favorite movie.
It is hard to top PTA. I really like who's harry crumb as well!
Great outdoors, can't get enough of that flick
Idk, I felt like the great outdoors wasn’t as good as people remember. Weird thing, we found polaroids of John Candy and Dan Akyroyd on the set of the great outdoors, in the basement in Michigan.
I loved it when Richard Crenna's character signed the deed to the rental house on the coffin at the former landlord's funeral. He literally took over his dead body.
Can I get a little room here please?
"We name vessels after women to remind us to treat them gently like ladies; otherwise, they won't respond like ladies. So, remember, always gentle on the the tiller."
I don’t understand how so few people have heard of this movie, particularly over here in the UK. Physical copies were always so hard to get hold of, so this was the main reason I got a VOD service several years ago, just purely to check out this film. It did not disappoint. My second favourite Candy film after Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Uncle Buck is also nice
My parents went vacationing in Sweden and they rented Summer Rental because it was the only VHS they could find that was in English. They’re glad they did!
This ISN'T a cult classic?!? I never knew!
Right?
I was a little shocked this wasn't considered one too. I love this movie.
It is to me.
I watched 9 John Candy movies, that I never watched, after your video. Summer Rental included.
I was already a fan, since I watch Planes, Trains & Automobiles every Thanksgiving (although we don't have such a thing here in Brazil).
Thanks!
Bom ver outro brasileiro por aqui.
What were the 9?
you prolly dont care but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost the password. I love any tricks you can give me.
@Davis Lawrence instablaster :)
That Jimmy Buffet song was never released on any album, and the movie didn't get a soundtrack release, so it's really hard to find.
Also, Rip Torn: Crazy like a diesel powered toothbrush, but alwas so good!
*Turnin' Around* I love that song!
@@dnasty312 Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of his, but that specific song I love!
The only Jimmy Buffett song I can stand. It’s a real toe tapper.
@@middleschoolgravy Check out his song from Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
Another good Summer movie would definitely be "One Crazy Summer", it also ends with a boat race.
@The Anthropologist _Forensic he should definitely talk about both movies, and maybe his third movie "How I got into College", it was pretty, but not as good.
Hell yes. John Cusak I think ruled the 80's as well.
@@allright I totally loved that movie. I watched that so many times forgetting that it was an 80s classic. And I thought it was a 90s classic.
Yes, absolutely. "One Crazy Summer" is a great almost cult classic and I'd love to see it get a video! John Cusack, Bobcat Goldthwait, a *very* young Demi Moore, Joe Flaherty, Rich Hall, and Rich Little and more are all in it - what a cast! (And "Better Off Dead" also deserves a video while we're at it.)
Have you ever noticed that people die in alphabetical order?
Another "Almost Cult Classic" by Reiner: "Summer School." One of the only on-camera roles for Richard Horivitz.
What about The Informant or Get Street Smart: A Kid's Guide To Stranger Dangers?
Summer School is great!
Summer School was one of my favorites of all time. I must have watched it 100 times on Starz back in the day.
Horvitz is in here, wow
@Maximus Prime So you'd consider it too popular to be an "almost" cult classic?
We have a new boat for the race!
What boat?
The Barnacle!
Dad, you're going to sail a *restaurant?*
I discovered this film long after John died.
Not many Aussies know it as well as say Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors, but it's arguably as good!
I watched this movie for the first time ages ago when it was on Netflix and loved it. I don't understand why it doesn't get as much love as John Candy's other movies like Uncle Buck or Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
I had a total crush on Kerri Green, who play the teen daughter. Too bad she didn't do more movies back then.
i watch this once every year in the summer. an enjoyable relaxing afternoon flick. Sometimes though I felt the film goes a bit of a complete different direction when it became about the boat race. And how it just ends on such a complete stop leaves me little bit off.
Summer Rental, The Great Outdoors and Jaws are the quintessential summer films for me every year since I was a kid. Rest in Peace John Candy.
Throw Meatballs in there and it's my yearly summer viewing as well.
Anytime anybody asks about a song or a story my mom used to tell me, I bust out The Love Boat theme and watch people just stare lol thank you. Love it
Can i suggest making a video on UHF? It’s a parody movie that stars Weird Al Yankovic. It’s as great as it sounds.
Fun movie
UHF is an ACTUAL Cult Classic, not an Almost...
It really is
@@MichaelGonzalez-hd7kk this.
I love this comment.
I've watched Summer Rental SIX TIMES since April this year....including just last night. It's just so easy to watch. Rip Torn is just too good in this film as well. One of my favorite actors and probably my favorite performance.
Rip Torn IS hugely underrated. I never remember his name (or rather I never remember that's who Rip Torn is). Whenever I hear it, I think of Rip Taylor. With his voice, he should've been called like Remington Bronsky or something. That's a name.
Very easy to watch. Also great for background noise when doing other stuff.
"Here's a sea ditty me mother taught me..." Rest in Peace Rip Torn.
I can't tell if this movie is a guilty pleasure or terribly under rated, but I love it so much.
Rip Torn taught me how to fish as a kid, and it warms my heart whenever I hear anyone speak well of him. He was a wonderful actor, and a real character.
I LOVE this movie, I had a tiny old TV with a vhs player and I watched this on repeat for days. Love Rip Torn in this, and John Candy is legendary as always. So many great scenes, truly underrated.
The popcorn gag was one of my favourite ones when I watched this film.
And the line "My fault, I should have told them to cook the second egg."
One of many movies my dad would rent in the 80’s. Great movie and great memories.
Wow, I've seen this movie so many times and had no idea Scully was Rip Torn!
Rip Torn elevated everything he was in.
This movie will always have a special place in my heart because it brings back many memories. Every summer before going on vacation, it was our tradition in my house to watch this movie lol. One year in particular, to this day, we call our Summer Rental summer because the whole week we were in Wildwood (New Jersey), it rained and rained. The very last day we were there was the only sunny day we got, so we spent hours on the beach and got sunburned like crazy. Then on the ride home, one of the back tires on the car blew and we were stuck on the side of the road about 15 miles away from the exit for Philadelphia (where we lived). During those days, cellphones weren't something everyone owned, so we had to try to use the emergency call box on the side of the highway. We found out later that the reason the call box didn't work was because it was struck by lighting a few days earlier. We were sitting there waiting for hours. Thankfully a cop that was driving by spotted us and he called in a tow truck for us. He was the one who told us about why the call box was damaged. It's such a funny story that we love reminiscing about lol.
my all time favorite John Candy movie. I loved him in everything he did but this movie was such great feel good family movie. also, one of my favorite Rip Torn movies ever.
Thanks, Joe. I don't know why I never watched this movie when I like John Candy so much. So now I will go find and watch it.
Also a topless scene
Did you watch Only the Lonely ? Great performance in that too.
Whenever I come across Summer Rental while going through the channels, I always stop and watch. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, but it’s entertaining and a bit of a flashback to the 80’s. I would definitely list it in my favorite John Candy movies behind Planes, Trains & Automobiles and Uncle Buck.
This is absolutely a cult classic.
I LOVE summer rental. John Candy at his best. I try to watch it once a year.
Thank you for this great UA-cam channel. The way you talk about actors like John Candy and the Three Stooges, its so loving.
John Candy really was that celebrity that everyone loved like a best friend. There's nobody else like him.
"Summer Rental" specifically reminds me of my family's beach vacations in the '80s.
John Candy is so endearing. I don't know what it is but I love his movies.
This and the Great Outdoors are my favorite summer movies to watch 😂
Thanks for re-introducing this film to me. I'm 59 and had forgotten about this. You should be producing trailers for Hollywood. The fact that you sound fairly young and appreciate these movies gives me hope.
While not as good as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Uncle Buck, this is a must watch every summer. Love being at the beach I go to every year and watching this on a rainy day.
Absolutely love, love, love this movie. Till this day, I laugh so hard when John Candy spills the dog food. Effing hysterical.
You can just leave that sir.
Great video! Summer Rental is required viewing for me every Summer.
I discovered your videos two weeks ago, I can say that this has quite possibly become my favourite UA-cam channel of all. Thank you for all the work you put into it, Mr. Ramoni.
Thanks so much!
Love this film! I think to compliment this film, you should check out/review the camping/cabin equivalent: “The Great Outdoors”
I'm surprised that you never covered the missing scenes! I saw it on cable in a motel room in Florida and they have cut out the part where Archie Farts in the overloaded car and many more such as Archie chews on the couch leg down to almost nothing and when the owners are sitting on it after Archie and family leave, the couch collapses down on the floor
Lol, Rip Torn singing the Love Boat theme is good.
I remember watching this on cable in the mid-80s when I was 11 or 12. Rip Torn's performance especially is great.
This has always been my favorite John Candy film (well besides Planes, Trains, and Automobiles of course). So incredibly underrated!
Man you bring back the memories! My 16 year old loves the old ones like John Candy, Bill Murray, Danny Devito and alot more.
Has Rip Torn's voice ever changed? I imagine he came out of the womb with that voice and beard.
Alright, it's kinda ironic that we're remembering this fun and relatable film since you use the VHS images. And I remember the beach house realization scene. Keep it up and stay safe!
It’s not my yearly tradition to have a john candy marathon in the summer watching this movie and the great outdoors
One of my favorite John Candy flicks and filmed in my hometown.
This is one of my favorite John Candy movies. I grew up watching this movie a lot.
Rip Torn is one of the greatest ever!
It’s such a fantastic film. I love it so much. The Jimmy Buffett song with the montage makes it even better.
My daughter and I used to watched this every weekend when she was little for some reason she loved it
I grew up loving this movie. It's a classic in my eyes.
Just watched Summer Rental this week; it’s such a fun little film and John Candy is charming/relatable as always.
This is to me the best John Candy Film, ever, my favorite scene is on the beach when he says you can't win them all, and the daughter says, but one one would be nice. and he responds yesd one would be nice. that's when it reached me and many others who would just like to win once.
I watched this a bunch as a kid, my neighbor had it recorded off HBO.
Ser, in praise of the thumbnail still you picked, we both know only one word will do...
"Perfect."
I live in this part of Florida (actually moved here in 1985) and everything about this movie is so accurate, from the "Road" vs "Lane" (because the same street names are used over and over, no originality) to the "beach access" going right through rental properties to the con artists that are all over St. Pete Beach. This is about as Florida a movie as you can find.
HELL YES my favorite John Candy film!! Probably one of the best soundtracks too…
Another movie that was replayed on cable around the same time as this movie was Funny Farm. Classic Chevy chase, it's a great watch and a good fit for your channel.
lol funny you say that I literally took out my copy to watch right before so scrolled down to this comment
@@shelby8364 great movie!
Love this channel! This was always on when I was a kid! I've seen it so many times! I wish John Candy was my dad. ❤️
I love this movie but it also makes me sad because I miss both Rip Torn and John Candy.
It seems like most people don’t realize he passed in 2019
I love this movie, I remember I first saw this airing only once on Nick@Nite. I would see this again whenever I get the chance mostly on AMC. I currently have the film on Prime Video but I don't want to see this now because winter is a really weird time to watch a summer movie, so I'm waiting when it is actually summer or at least spring to watch it unless the film is removed before then, damn those streaming apps.
This is one of the most charming films I’ve ever seen. Nothing but great talent and good fun.
love john candy sorely missed not only that too i love looking at these old 80s movies miss the 80s was in my 20s then
It's more than almost. I think it is! John Candy was sooo relatable and hilarious!
we just had a debate on my karaoke stream about the name of this movie. i remembered the plot, the barnacles, the restaurant, the pirate, the pants on the sail...they were saying the great outdoors, but i knew that wasn't right! thanks for clearing it up.
This is an absolute treasure of a channel!
I love Summer Rental along with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and Uncle Buck. RIP John and Carl Riner together again
Well, it's 2 years later and I finally got around to watching Summer Rental. You were right! It was a lot of fun. John Candy was so likeable and believable, as always. The supporting cast was also fine, especially Rip Torn as Cap'n Scully, and Richard Crenna as the infinitely boo-hiss-able Mr Pellet. Thanks again for showcasing these gems for us, Joe.
Co staring, Bob Wells. a Clevelander aka. "Hoolihan The Weather Man!"
Yes! Ghoulardi, Hoolihan, Big Chuck, and, later, Little John!
I believe I recall Joe Bob Briggs giving credit to Rip Torn as a great character actor.
I was there when they filmed and John Candy used to hang out with the spectators. He was a very nice man
Add One Crazy Summer before the season is over.
Man I love John Candy just as much as you do. He makes anything great and he never disappointed. There will never be another one like him
Dude I am loving this channel, being born in the late 80s I grew up on films and you’re capturing a genre of movies I’ve been exposed to and enjoyed but didn’t quite stick into adulthood. This is what makes it “Almost.” It’s a treat returning to some of these films BUT this video actually made me want to see this film and it turned out to be on HBO Max, I’m just enjoying it as a fun escape movie and it really has just enough subtle charm to enjoy. Nostalgic movies galore!
One of my favorites and a severely underrated movie along with Nothing but Trouble and The ‘Burbs.
Was not one of his first starring roles, he had first roles in Canadian films. But first leading role in United states tho.
And he brings his trademark canadian politeness here, going to town smacking his OWN stuff to get people to leave. only threatening a guy when he has to, and still not coming close to hitting him.
This is one of those movies if I am having a bad day, like the Jimmy Buffet song, can turn it around. Favorite part is the scene where the daughter says I wet my bed and Candy responds, "No, you wet their bed." Gets a laugh out of me every time.
Also, Rip Torn was excellent in this film. Out of a lot of great performances from him, this is one of my favorites.
Love your channel btw. Especially bringing light to these little known films. As well as honoring the great John Candy.
I love Summer Rental and Volunteers! Summer Rental also features my favorite Jimmy Buffett song!
I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater when I was a kid! This film is full of wonderful character actors, a genuinely relatable story, some great scenery and tons of laughs and heart! I could watch this any time, honestly!
I don't remember which streaming service I watched this on but it was totally at random and I'm glad that I did because it was a very enjoyable film.
Summer Rental and The Great Outdoors. I grew up with these movies...
This was so great. Richard Crenna was great as the bad guy.
Both Torn and Crenna were terrific.
And both Starred with McQueen in epic movies.
DEFINITELY A CLASSIC. I have loved this movie since I saw it in the theater as a junior in high school in 85. I watched it with my kids. They are grown and I have 2 grandkids. Candy was so funny. He could take simple life and turn it into a hilarious entertainment. We lost a great one there. RIP John! We still love you!
This was a somebody's moment developing before our very eyes.
I got to see this in the theater when it came out! I share this movie with folk whenever I can! John Candy love always!
I've never seen this film but i feel like its a movie we (me and my 4 older siblings ) shouldve grown up watching since we watched alot of SNL/SCTV alum movies with John candy, Chevy chase, Steve martin, eddie murphey etc in em, idk how i missed this one but thank you Hats off im gonna see if i can stream this if its available.
I'm glad someone brought this film up. I think it's largely forgotten these days. I first saw it on a summer day inside about 10 years ago and was completely unaware of it before then. It holds up as well as his classics like Uncle Buck.
Thank you for the review. It's on TV right now. I was going to pass. But after seeing your video, I am looking forward to the experience.
Just got back from St.pete/Clearwater and I got too go too almost all of the locations in the film. The bridge that says welcome too citrus cove, The Gardners house that johns family gets kicked out of, the location that was used for the barnacle, the spot where John and his son couldn't rent a boat because they were all rented out, unfortunately the house that they stay in after there kicked out of the first one is no longer there, the movie theater building still stands, overall this is one of my favorite movies and it was just awesome too see these locations irl, this was our fourth trip here can't believe I never knew that this is where summer rental was filmed, Pinellas Park being the majority
back when movies were good
thx
I adore John Candy!!! This is a great movie!!! I'd take those over a power tool any day!!
