Maybe the Celts are so popular because you play as them in the learning campaign, they are the first civilization you meet. I have also noticed when I watched some AIs play that the Celts probably have the best build order of all civilizations. I play AoE II for 14 years and choosing Celts is always like going back home.

''May the Siege Onagers of Saint Patrick pwn you.'' This is why you're the best. You put so much effort into making these videos and you made me give the Celts a second opinion. They are now one of my favourite civs.
As a player who mains Celts, I was waiting on this one for along time :) True they dont have hands-down the best siege in the game, but the thing is, Celt siege is so flexible across all siege units, bonuses and wood bonus, that you never feel bad when going siege on Celts. With most civs you have to think about the enemy civs/units, but with celts you are always safe going heavily on wood and building a couple siege workshops fast because there will always be something useful there.
Can you make a video about Mangonel line? Like if it is affected by hill bonus, how big is the spread, how much damage it makes to buildings/units, if it's affected by any armor, how much damage it makes after chemistry etc. Mangonel is probably the most mysterious unit for me, I just know it throws rocks
+Miroslav Mydlo I think in AoE 2 you also have the invisible "building armour" stat attached to the units which Masonry and Architecture mention in the description, and I think the Mangonel line and Bombard Cannons exactly deal that type of damage. So in other words I reckon that's the equivalent of Siege Damage from AoE 3 (not so much AoM's "Crush Damage" since infantry and cavalry are resistant to it). Don't quote me on it but I think this might be the case.
+1 to that. Thanks to Spirit I learned that it's devastating against certain types of slow-moving units, and with Celts and Mongols Siege Onagers are a go-to unit, still...I consider myself a damn ignorant with those guys.
Here is my opinion for what I would give for the grades; Archers; A feudal, B+ Castle, F Imp (B- overall) Infantry; A- Cavalry; B- SIege; A+ Navy; A Early on, B late game (A- overall) Defenses; B (B+ forgotten) Monks; C- Economy; A
Hey Spirit of the Law. Just recently started watching your videos and I just gotta say I'm really impressed with the amount of work you put into your videos. Quality stuff, big like.
Thanks Spirit for another overview. I really had no idea what that Celt sheep bonus actually did haha! I'll have to lame some sheep next time I play. You're slowly getting through all the civ overviews. Keep it up!
NO! my Celt sheep stealing days are over! well just gonna slightly more difficult to do now after this vid is out. Time to see if that is so been off for awhile time to get back to it.
Just wanted to say that i recently discovered your channel and all your videos about AoE2 are amazing. Watching these videos made me realize a lot of civilization bonuses i overlooked and the analisis you do is perfect, quantifying every % and showing the "de-facto" bonus. Thanks a lot really! So much informing, and relaxing too hehe
Ahhh :D I have already agreed to thee contract. But in all honesty these overviews are so good to watch because of all the little but hilarious things you add. Great video!
I've always liked Celts. I usually play as mayans or koreans, but I think I'm going to play celts for a while now. Woad raiders are not only good units but they also look pretty cool. Also nice timing on the video, uploading it on St. Patrick's day.
Nice to see the Celts finally, they're a favourite of mine. In casual team games I like to load their siege rams with woad raiders and basically roll high-speed tanks and APCs into enemy territory.
I always thought the Celts were more popular on account of nostalgia. Celts being the only civilization you can pick on the demo version of AOE2 Age of Kings and because the first training campaign is that of William Wallace.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention how awesome siege rams become (and especially the celtic ones with all the upgrades) when you fill them up with units. I love to play as the celts, upgrade the siege rams and fill them up with those good elite woad raiders. They're really fast and tough, good for smashing stuff and spawn 6 woad raiders when they're destroyed.
Great overview, honestly. The only thing I would say different would be to give their cavalry a B-. This may sound crazy, but I think one of the primary functions of cavalry is to counter archers, and even pallys without the last armor upgrade have less pierce armor than a cavalier with. Their hussars are terrible for taking on archers, with pierce armor as low as a champion and no bloodlines to boot. This magnifies their weakness to archers, which is especially bad considering they're the counter to all the infantry you're expecting to have.
+Porglit Agree with the cavalry being weak, but honestly their siege is enough to take care of archers. Siege Tanks (rams) to soak up the arrow fire, and onagers to turn the archers to ash, I don't think they need cavalry.
AinaweeUAE I totally agree, which is why I don't think they're a horrible civ. But I don't think the cavalry rating should reflect their siege strength. A B- for their cavalry would just mean you have to look elsewhere to counter archers, and oh hey, A+ for siege!
+Porglit To me it's a straight C. > No bloodlines makes for a subpar knight rush. They have a good feudal eco to compensate, but not as much as, say, Vikings. > In Imperial Age I'd much rather have the last armor upgrade and bloodlines than two unit upgrades that are much more expensive. Honestly though, I think the Woad Raider functions like something between light and heavy cavalry line, what with speed, cheapness and good attack.
landochabod7 Having pallies, even without bloodlines and the last armor, is still better than a C, especially with hussars as well. Not good, mind you, but I wouldn't go THAT low. As for Woad Raiders, they are closer to light cav, but they're missing the distinctive 3 pierce armor, which is what makes normal hussars so good against archers.
Celts have pretty much always been my favorite civ. Awesome Eco and inf and best siege in the game. As well as being good on pretty much any map. And yes I liked them before Hoang.
Celts are essentially a very basic civilization. Its basically the first civilization you play when you are new to Age of empires. So its designed to have a lot of early team bonuses such as the sheep.
1: Build Woad raiders 2: Buggy pathing through everything 3: Slip through crack in someones wall that is impossible to see but they mobs will path through 4: Run around faster than any unit in the game including cavalry and 3 hit town centers.
i dont know if it works the same with celt wood as it does with turk gold, but i found turks actually collect gold faster than the 15% it actually says. i think it is between 17 and 18% faster. it might be worth testing because collection rates probably work similar to attack rates with their % bonuses being more than they give credit for. When you're playing as celts, you might be tempted to go into cavalry because they have paladins. however, the lack of bloodlines and the last armor upgrade makes them very vulnerable. when you consider how much the paladin upgrade costs it is rarely worthwhile to get the paladin upgrade or invest heavily into heavy cavalry. getting the paladin upgrade usually just backfires by making u waste all that gold on a unit that has a severe lack of upgrades. personally, i would rather go heavy cavalry with a civ like the turks that have bloodlines and the final armor upgrade and be able to get 10 extra cavalier out than invest all that money in the paladin upgrade which typically wont pay off, especially considering how strong their siege and infantry are.
Woad Raider and Pikemen swarm. The very low gold cost of Woad Raiders and the 0 gold cost of Pikemen allows you to swarm them even after all the gold has been bled dry from the map. They are also fast enough to hawk down missile/siege, so cavalry not needed. You can pump out enough of them and their decent enough to swarm any infantry masses. This technique has never failed me to win a LONG victory when the map will eventually be reduced of all gold.
Thanks for another great civ overview. I'd like to see the Chinese next. I've tried to figure out how to start out with them but I couldn't. Happy Saint Paddy's day!
I saw this video when it first came out, and have seen it a few times since, but I've just discovered an amazing revelation... the Celts footage is green because St Patrick's Day!
Great video , Keep them coming, the bookmarks are great, but i let it run in the background and listened to you like an audio book while i was editing some of my "RL Lumberjack" Video's =P
I think the speed bonus for infantry is because if you read some of the famous accounts about encounters with Celtic warriors by Julius Caesar and others they often mention how they would charge forward with astonishing speed often relying on the surprise to win.
People from Glasgow call Celtic (The football team) 'Sel-tick' and Celtic (Historical) 'Keltick' however when talking about the Celts we call it 'Kelts' just like anyone else :)
Looking through the comments, it looks like not a lot of people actually knew who the celts were... And every time i see someone say "Celtic=Irish" a little part of my faith in humanity as an intelligent species dies. Props to the video creator for that St Patrick's Day fact. Most people don't know that 'driving the snakes from Ireland' refers to killing and converting the druids who customarily had tattoos of coiled snakes.
Am I missing something here? Celt's 15% faster wood gathering bonus makes a much, much bigger deal if you skew your spending towards wood heavy units. It's way way faster to get 4000 wood as the Celts than it is to get 1000 wood, 1000 food, 1000 gold and 1000 stone. Therefore you should lean towards using units that cost lots of wood- ships, skirmishers etc. Effectively it's the same as 'wood cost of everything is 15% less'
+Shoes Yeah, they are very underrated with a few civ combos ;-). Goths - Italians are supports with walls, bombards and genoese xbows. Malians - Malian Condottiero +3 pierce armor. Turks - They can fast advance and boom fast tech, for example bombard towers.
***** Mediocre? So you underrate them then (they are my favourite FE civ) :-). Italians are great civ with a few good options and their team bonus is one of the better. They are very good in team games thanks their supportive ability and in 1v1 they only lose to Japanese, Koreans, Mayans, Celts and Malians, other civs are not that a big problem. Yeah, they are unable to rush, but that was never their capability ;-).
***** I liked the Italians before their AK change, now they are even better. They are very good type of supportive civ, Goths or Turks on their side are unstoppable, Italians perfectly cover their weaknesses :-). Its funny you say how Italians are bad, without even play them properly or more than in one game. I play only Italians or Malians in AK, so if you think they are that bad, 1v1 me then ;-).
***** So you simply fear me, nothing more, I like people like you, big words and no action ;-). Check my channel, I am enough competent player of AoE, sure more than you think. Did you tried Italians with Goths for example? You wall them at the start, later then you support their mass infantry with Genoese Xbow against cavalry and Bombards against Siege, both these thing counter Goths infantry. I didnt said they are everywhere perfect, they have big trouble on Black Forest or Arabia. On water maps such as Islands even Celts are better than them, their water bonus sounds great but in real game its nothing. Italians with water bonus are bad on water maps.....
Good vid, especially the part about the wood bonus. I wonder why Celts are not rated as a good rushing Civ for that reason, because +%15 wood can make a great difference whether your rush will succeed or not. They are in fact my favorite rushing civ because unlike Goths, Magyars or Mayans, your opponent won't be able to anticipate what will be coming in so easily. Everyone will expect a Magyar to be scout rushing and place some spears at his woodline => rush likely to fail. Celts can go range (either archer or skirm), spears (good because fast), or fast castle due to their wood bonus. When in team with a Briton (haha) or a esp. a Goth their feudal rush can get really scary...
That wording on the sheep thing is curious. I can only assume they did it like that to make it not too obvious, but technically still tell you about it if you read the bonus as: Sheep within an enemy celtic civ's unit's line of sight are immune from conversion by that unit (unlike other civs).
Do you have any commentaries about how different civ's do with a population cap of 75 or lower? That's how we always played in college because defense buildings meant more, and you had to balance your army and economy more.
I don't know why, but getting a cameo in a video about one of my favourite civs (Other than the all mighty Byzantines) just makes me feel happy. Thanks Spirit, I can now say I have made two cameos in people's videos. You're still the best! Now can you review the Mongols...ohhh, you did that? Byzantines? Did that too... Turks? Dammit, them too... Spirit, I think I'm out of civs to beg you to review D': Wait, I know! What about the Koreans? I have never seen anyone ever play them, not even me D:
Do you think Celts should use some kind of a buff in DE since they have been virtually untouched for years? Strongholds seems to be a filler unique tech with no significant impact whatsoever, while other civs with filler unique techs in the Castle saw changes or even total revamps that changes the civs' playstyle, like the Persians.

Great translation of the Patrick's phrase.
How about doing the Italians soon. After looking at them on the wiki I really like the look of them.
+Shoes
Yeah, they are very underrated with a few civ combos ;-).
Goths - Italians are supports with walls, bombards and genoese xbows.
Malians - Malian Condottiero +3 pierce armor.
Turks - They can fast advance and boom fast tech, for example bombard towers.
*****
Mediocre? So you underrate them then
(they are my favourite FE civ) :-).
I second this!
*****
I liked the Italians before their AK change, now they are even better.
*****
So you simply fear me, nothing more, I like people like you, big words and no action ;-).
„They work well for people who only want to play one civilization every time.“
„Celts eat TC.“
Sir William Wallace: bringing FREEEEEEDOOOOM with his Siege Onagers.
Reminds me of Ghandi with his nukes of nuclear peace
Yay I made a cameo in your video! (Bottom left hand corner).
15:39 That villager going to lure the boar. My mind cannot let that go.
+OrlovKruskayev And that villager was never to be seen ever again.
The siege onagers of St. Patrick pwned me.
the intro song is really good
update ?
finaly an overview of my favorite civilisation of aoe2 !!
That wording on the sheep thing is curious. I can only assume they did it like that to make it not too obvious, but technically still tell you about it if you read the bonus as: Sheep within an enemy celtic civ's unit's line of sight are immune from conversion by that unit (unlike other civs).
Awesome video, i liked it a lot! Just missing the Graphs a bit, but you make up for it by other humors.
Do you have any commentaries about how different civ's do with a population cap of 75 or lower? That's how we always played in college because defense buildings meant more, and you had to balance your army and economy more.
Celtic Glasgow you'll never walk alone ! Cheers from the Merseyside
i love ur vids bro . they seem so proffesional! gr8 wrk ,kipitøp
Spirit, I think I'm out of civs to beg you to review D':
Wait, I know! What about the Koreans? I have never seen anyone ever play them, not even me D:
*S C O T L A N D F O R E V E R*
Yes, another civ overview. And it was worth to wait. :)
