  • When asked "why should I worship a dead Jew?", a Presbyterian minister penned a sermon and a song to go along with it. The song turned into a Resurrection classic! Hear the story and take a close look at the words of his hymn in today's episode.

    LYRICS:
1 I serve a risen Saviour, He's in the world today
I know that He is living, whatever men may say
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer
And just the time I need Him He's always near
    Refrain:
He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today
He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way
He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart
You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart
2 In all the world around me I see His loving care
And though my heart grows weary I never will despair
I know that He is leading, through all the stormy blast
The day of His appearing will come at last
3 Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian Lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King
The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find
None other is so loving, so good and kind

Growing up in SouthTown Baptist Church in Des Moines Iowa, this was my favorite hymn as early as I can remember. Whenever we had an evening of special request songs, number 124 in our Hymnal was "He lives" and it was guaranteed that Michael would call out 124 from the time I was 4 years old. He lives!! Hallelujah

One of my absolute favorite Easter songs. I always sang it at the top of my lungs as a child, mostly because it was so joyful and sounded like it should be shouted with joy. 💙😂

Nice rendition you sang and played! I grew up singing this wonderful hymn. It is also special because we sang it at the funeral of a friend of mine who was taken by cancer at the prime age of 32.

Great job as always my hillbilly friend. I grew up singing this wonderful song along with many other great hymns of the church. And “He Lives” was and still is one of my favorite. Thank you so much for explaining how it came to be.

We sang it in Sunday school in the 70’s, since we were kids, our teacher only taught us the chorus…later on as we graduated to teens class we learned the stanzas.

Love it! ❤ Last year, our Assembly of God church did not sing that for Resurrection Sunday. Was very disappointed.

I too love this song and have known it since a little child as our church sang it always on the resurrection morning (Easter). My favourite lines in the song are: I serve a risen savior … u ask me how I know He lives… He lives within my heart” 👏

"He Lives" has always has been one of my favorites. I must have learned it as a young child at the (real) Methodist church of the 1950s in Wichita Falls, Texas. Thank for your work, Luke. Let's be a blessing.

Our denomination when I was growing up would hold annual meetings to discuss church business and plans involving all the churches in that section of the country. Every evening for the week, a service would be held to worship and learn. One of the favorite songs for everyone to sing was “He Lives!” The part that I remember was that the song leader would have everyone hold the phrase He lives, extending it for several seconds at the end of the chorus. Many hundred people singing, “He livvvves, He livvvvvves, He livvvvves within my heart.”

Part two of my “He Lives” memory; Now, some 60 years later, we sang this song on a Sunday morning at our church (different denomination, and other side of the country,) and I was running the slides for the words as the congregation sang. During the second verse, I was reliving the memory of my youth, transported to the auditorium and the song leader holding his arms in the air, “He LIVVVVVVES, He LIVVVVVES….” Suddenly my coworker in the projection booth is hitting me in the arm and in a screaming whisper, “Hey, HEY, what are you doing?!?! Catchup!!! I had forgot to push the button for the next slide and the congregation, without words was completely lost. It was a train wreck.
Still a GREAT song and so true. Thanks for the history and the memories!

Question, King Harold celebrated his birthday a pagan day referred to the Easter deity.
The Passover reference is to Christ who is our Passover. During the time of Egypt’s captivity, God’s people were told to put blood on their door ways from the lamb and the Angel of the Lord would Passover their home and spare the first born. Should we use pagan ideas and lose sight of what our Saviour did for us?
