The little graphics he has makes me so happy to look at too, its simple and nice and always matches the theme, but while being fun to stare at for hours, its yet not distraction from my mind watching the motion picture going on in my head.

When I was growing up in the 90's, there was a website I loved to visit. Its motto was 'The information insemination'.
I learned from that website that a hacker was just a curious person, who likes to know how systems worked. That system can be how people behave. It could be a lock on a door. It could be a computer network. Maybe it's your automobile?
With that frame in mind, it makes total sense someone would break into a system just to peek around.
Yeah but people smart enough to do that are definitely smart enough to know the potential consequences, even IF you didn't do anything wrong; take Aaron Schwartz for example. So the more criminal the act, the more powerful of amotive is needed to overcome the human tendency to risk aversion.. There's a few tried and true motives with money, influence, or revenge being far and away the most common/powerful motives.
@@richardcompton6702 assuming that someone capable of doing that will be the same as most people is a bit of a risk. A lot of hackers, scientist and engineers have done risky things in the name of curiosity. With basically no other motive. Not every person is risk adverse and even more some are wired where other things override risk aversion.
@@notsam498 Sure, but in the name of "curiosity", those people aren't of malicious intent and carefully weigh the risks most often while taking care to be considerate of the potential consequences.. Again, Aaron Schwartz, his motivation was curiosity i.e. "Why the hell are free resources restricted from public access behind a paywall?" then i.e. "Well, I have a way to get them once for free and provide them to people for free.. can I do this and improve the broken system?" then i.e. "Sure I can.. and considering the legalities of it, it shouldn't be a problem (ethically at least) but just to be safe, let's run the script from an untraceable laptop left in the maintenance closet of MIT to cope with any unforeseeable risks"... I mean, he knew somewhat what he was up against and took basic precautions... Security cams still ID'd him, and the outages to MIT accessing the (Justia db I think it was) caused by blacklisting due to volume of requests translated to "financial damages", federal investigators pulling security footage, the light being turned on when he changed the hard-drives on the download laptop revealing his face on the footage, and his subsequent heavy-handed prosecution... all because of the all-too-rare NOBLE motivation of Justice.. IF he were of true criminal intent, you can bet he would have committed greater consideration to hiding his identity (i.e. check the maintenance closet for security cams) and likely would never have been caught rather than doing the bare minimum to mask himself (likely because "well, I'm doing a good thing anyways so even if I AM caught, how bad could it be? Shit, they should probably thank me." .. *Commits suicide facing hundreds of years during prosecution for correcting a critical error in the system.*
@@notsam498 I will also say, that for those who are motivated by desperation? I think this motive may be the most common of all, the root of most crime in reality, and is a much less likely motivator to result in "burying the lead" so to speak. Can't feed yourself and you have the ability to steal BTC? You're going to prioritize the money you need and, once that's secure and your family won't starve, THEN you'll care about protecting your identity. Before then, how much value is your identity worth if you're going to likely die of poverty before anyone catches you for something that might not even work to begin with? Compare this to the career thief/hacker... Knowing full-well the damage they're doing and looking towards their 3rd house or ferrari with already 2m in stolen crypto stashed.. Well, they're infinitely less likely to get caught as their focus is the crime itself and, thus, will be inclined much more to put forth time and consideration into getting away with it BECAUSE they don't NEED to do it...THERE'S ALWAYS A MOTIVATION and it ALWAYS informs the actions and patterns of behavior of the individuals committing the act, my guy....
Nowadays, hacking is infinitely more complicated than 10 years ago.. You have to be better than the best hacker 10 years ago in terms of body and breadth of pre-requisite knowledge to even have an application for a penetration testing position seen and certified in ways that didn't even think of existing then. and then you need to BE about 3-5 levels better than that in practice to actually get on.. If you're good enough to gain unauthorized access and peek around in a non-chalant manner, then you're more than educated enough to know that if there's a single shred of logging enabled on that system and anything ever happens to it before those logs rotate OR it (or you) happens to be in one of many big-brother surveillance states with monitoring on the ISP's and larger regional networks then the evidence of your unauthorized access can be there for YEARS after you just kicked in the door to have a look around and left and you could be prosecuted for simply doing that because someone ELSE came a year later and chose to actually compromise the system.. If you do this stuff, you know just how persistent a digital footprint can be and you don't just take risks like that.. Lose your certification? Your reputation? etc? All because you were curious? JS, nah, you'd double-wrap it, proxychains tor into tor again while cycling your nodes every 3 minutes and then into a series of paid proxies (paid with BTC or skimmed credit cards to throw off anybody in case they did pull the financial records for that service) and/or previously compromised zombie computers in strategically chosen countries selected for their lack of coordination with international law-enforcement from a cash-bought second-hand laptop with a VPN from another state in a coffee shop 3 towns over so that there's 12+ red-herrings leading to 3 separate dead-ends should anybody with resources try and sus you out before you even try to breach a target out of "curiosity" just to "take a look around" bro... Not that even then it's worth the risk but still.

I work in cyber security for a huge corp, and I do drive 4 hours per week to go to and from work, whenever I get out of my garage I choose an episode and I drive through the highway and for some reason I don’t even know how I got to the office building. I love the show and I’ve been a fan since hearing the story of the guy who robbed the wrong bank in Beirut, Lebanon 😂.

This has been my favorite podcast since I discovered it. The longer these stories go on, the crazier and weirder they become. All the twists and turns and bizarre happenings make for some captivating tales. The animations and general aesthetic are nicely done as well.
Agreed I have listened to them all and I am about to start relistening. I am interested in building servers, pentesting and new tech in general. This is a great jumping off point. Also Mr. Robot.

LOL I did one summer. Worked out of Charlotte, NC and took over as administrator to Bank of America. They were so embarrassed that it was so easy for me to get in and take over their whole Primary Active Directory Domain, they just asked how I did it and I told them if they made this problem go away, I would tell them and walk. They had no choice but to agree because I could have easily then told as many people as possible it was a NT 4.0 security flaw. Especially, since I didn't do anything else to their network, nor PC systems. I knew I'd get caught, I just wanted to know how and what they would do about it IF someone were to threaten their market value with a vulnerability.
All it was was the emergency recovery disk. ANY NT 4.0 system could generate one and ALL worked to open up the admin accounts. So, I had NT 4.0 and hacked BofA without anyone in the world knowing the wiser. That's a story I can keep with me and re-tell til my grave just for teh lulz.

I think the element of secrecy/'pushing the envelope' in hacking, social engineering, system manipulation etc, adds to the addictive nature of these activites for certain personality subsets. A lot of people seem to be locked in on this podcast and for good reason. We can vicariously peak into a somewhat hidden world that has its own culture. That increases the allure to find out exactly what its like in this 'space' that spans the range of harmless fun hobby or malicious/illegal act.

You certainly don't need advice for your show, it's a quality show, I look forward to hearing it. Just this one thing... I think you could use, either a quick opening cue or a pause or something at the start of the show. Not me, to be sure, but SOME people browse quietly enough to mess up youtube's progress tracker, so if the network pauses or something and the episode restarts, you might not be able to tell. Maybe a creepy little whisper "....D a r k n e t D i a r i e s ...". :-D

Gary has an extremely skilful and overpowered hacker at his command that can easily slice through large corporate networks of well funded and well protected companies like a hot knife through butter and all he does with that power is silly stuff like getting an email list to send out spam!

So how do I put this? It seems like there was ethers more than one hacker or this guy was really good. But if he was really that good he didn’t do that much to cover his tracks. Most really good hackers are never caught because they use multiple ips and cover there tracks. They also never give there real name or meet with the client or any other form of communication. Sounds like rookie mistakes from a pro. Hhhmmm
