James you have the rare combination of (1) Explaining concepts & thoughts in very accessible language, (2) a strong understanding of what makes a good piano and (3) the piano skills to demonstrate what you are trying to communicate.
Thank you very very much for sharing your thoughts and reviews on various acoustic and digital pianos. In doing so, you make the world a better place.

I got my es110 two days ago and man i love it. Thanks for the honest review !. setting damper resonance to maximum makes it sound just too darn good!
Also i figured out a way to connect android device via bluetooth and work with synthesia if anyone's into that.
Edit- I managed to make the sound even more dynamic by setting the piano voicing to dynamic. It almost acts like a real piano now. Softer hits make mellow sounds and hard hits make it brighter.

I spent quite a large amount of time researching the right piano to get for my child to learn on. After watching the reviews on the Roland FP-30, Casio PX-S3000, Yamaha P125, and the Kawai ES110, I made a decision and opted for the Kawai ES110 with the full package including the Furniture Stand and the Kawai F-350 Triple Pedal.
This piano plays like a dream and has all the bells and whistles that I wanted hidden in the keys while keeping a very simplistic user interface to eliminate any distractions for a young child who likes to play with buttons and sliders. (Why my MIDI controllers would be impossible for them to learn on!)
The price was great for a piano that is sitting right in the midst of a toy battle field on a daily basis should anything accidentally happen to it. (Respect for piano keys is very important in our house)
I just finished hooking it up through Reaper as a MIDI device and works decent enough to trigger additional sound samples. (Although I was noticing some pressure sensitivity issues with the touch response)
Thank you for all your hard work in putting these videos together to give people a sound basis for a very well-informed opinion before making a purchase as many are not able to feel these keys prior to purchasing to find out what their preference may be. I was very much able to get a realistic expectation with your acute attention to small details. Very much appreciated!!
Kawai has such a lovely, soft, and enjoyable mellow tone to their pianos. I also see possibilities of an MP11SE in the future.

First of all, nice review, nice playing. Lovely indeed! You reminded me of my first experience with a Kawai. Back in the early 70's I was playing bass with a southern blues rock band but my first instrument growing up was piano. We were in some small to medium size town in Ga though the town escapes me. We needed something from a music store and surprisingly the town had a music store with several real pianos. (affordable portable pianos that sounded real did not exist then other than maybe a lab somewhere though there was the Wurlitzer and the Rhodes. Tech just simply wasn't there yet.) But anyway, one of the pianos was a 6' or so grand and I sat down and started to play. My jaw dropped. I had never heard of a Kawai. What few experiences I had with a grand up til then was Steinway and some other brands that I don't remember. I found it interesting that you found this piano had a "lovely" action as you describe it. And that's exactly how I was feeling about the real grand. It was wonderfully crisp, easy to play sounded very good and for - wait for it - just over 4 thousand dollars lol! Oh wouldn't we love one at that price these days. I just checked and I think their lower priced 6'1" model is just under 40K! Price goes up QUICKLY from there! But I never forgot that piano. Never was blessed to own a real grand because I traveled too much and they aren't real portable if you know what I mean. But again, very nice job. Just found it interesting that you were almost reviewing the one I played as I would have reviewed it back then. Again, nice job, and thanks for sending me down memory lane as I watched.

We bought the ES110 having tried just about all the alternatives. It has proved to be the best "gigging" piano I have ever encountered: my son has used it to play Chopin Etudes, Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody 2, Scarlatti sonatas, and even "Pirates of the Caribbean"! It has performed flawlessly for over a year, and we run it through a small 40w P.A. simply to extend the bass. Great piano altogether (although it doesn't really compare with our 6'7" Broadwood or Bill's Model 7 Bechstein upright!).

Your videos bring to light potential downsides and positives which helps viewers pick an instrument that really suits their needs. I also appreciate how your videos imply that a digital piano is not an acoustic piano replacement, rather it'll try to emulate one as best it can and of course there will always be "flaws"

I didn’t realise a classical pianist could be this cool.I dig his slightly Beethoven -esque hairstyle and ever so faintly Fonz-esque Italian leather jacket, Sharp and on point delivery coupled with the essential information you would need when making a purchase decision. A real cultured class act.
I’m coming back strong on a classical guitar after a couple decades of falling out of love with music and I’m seriously considering getting this keyboard and keeping it there on standby to aid in building musical pieces and also in the further development as regards other instruments.

The one thing I can say, besides excellent job, is that I owned a Kawai acoustic piano, and it had a very light action compared to other pianos, even the Yamaha acoustic. Yamaha was lighter than Steinway for sure. So I think that Kawai is just a light touch piano in all cases, even with their professional acoustic line.

Great review, and definitely saving to get one. Used to have the es100 which I loved but before I emigrated to Norway I sold it to my dad to replace his ancient Clavinova which only had 16 note polyphony and a dead G right after middle C. Think it was a late '80s model. He fell in love with piano all over again.
I noticed in your review that you seem to get only 4 acoustic piano sounds when it actually has 8. Don't know if you need to tap it in a certain way, but if you hold the piano button and press one of the white keys between A0 and A1, you get the full range. There was a particular mellow variation with some extra sweetness to it in the ES100 that my dad gravitated towards for slow, melodic jazz and ballady jazz stuff. Looking forward to using it as a midi controller as well to add more elements to my first forays into music production. You are one heck of a player and do your reviews really well. Had considered the Casio PX-S1000, but your video on its troublesome key action put me right off of it. I also like that the ES100 has actual midi ports and not a single USB, so I can hook it up to my Mackie interface and monitor with ease. Thanks for the great video, and great playing.

I feel kawai digital piano has the best action, compared to other digital piano's... It resembles more like the acoustic pianos and the tone quality wise it really sounds as the acoustic pianos. I've been using Kawai CN39 from last 4months... Just love it! Worth for it's price.

I think it is interesting that you talk about the action on the piano so much in your videos. Since I started learning how to play guitar some years ago, I have realized how important action is on a guitar. It is interesting that it is also so important on not only the guitar but also the piano.

You helped my decision to get this piano. I love its simple layout, not too much fuss on show as I really don't care about all the gizmos, I just want great piano sounds and a nice feel action that's not too heavy weighted. So the only flaws you could come up with are my positives anyway :) The quality damper foot pedal also swayed me. I've not had a piano for years so I'm excited for it to arrive. Thanks for the top review James.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm looking for a new digital piano as I sold my AB Chase upright grand. Last night I almost bought a Nord but seeing as I am not working due to covid wanted something more reasonably priced...I found the Kawai and then I found your review and I can't thank you enough! SOLD!

Would love to have you review the Alesis Recital Pro (Alesis, send this man a keyboard!). Intensely curious whether there is a worthwhile hammer-action digital piano available at the lower half of the sub-$1000 price range. That one has been getting good reviews (albeit from less thorough reviewers!). Keep up the helpful and interesting work!

After owning it for a few months I can say I’m very happy with this piano. It sounds amazing considering the price.
The only thing I haven’t figured out is recording onto my computer. I tried garage band but their default piano sounds horrible. I don’t know how to record the sound from the piano itself in the same way you do it.

    • @ThePianoforever

We record from the direct outs in the back of the keyboard to a mixer and then record it from there. You can also record directly into a portable recorder from the direct outs as well.

I've been looking very intensely for a Beginner Piano, the Kawai ES110 is by far the best! The sound is closest to an acoustic piano. It has Line out exits, a first-class damping Pedal and is easy to use! Whoever is impatient and no longer wants to spend money, buy! If you have a little more patience, put the money back a few months longer and buy the Kawai ES8! There's nothing better! 👍😎😘

Thank you! Great review! Was first going for something around $200 (like the Yamaha Piaggero NP12) but the "hammer keys" seems like something I'd prefer free I want to emulate a real piano as close as possible, without paying a fortune.
The Bluetooth connection is also something very attractive so that you can connect it to FlowKey or such app.

I have an ES110 and I can say that the action is heavier than our Yamaha upright piano which I thought was a "real" piano. The main reason I chose it above the Roland and Yamaha options is they did not forget to add some audio outputs. I had been using a cheaper Yamaha that only had a headphone output and it would switch off the speakers when using an amplifier (that was extremely annoying when the speakers were at the other end of the hall). The only downside is that the ES110 does not have battery slots, but I'm planning to create a power supply using a power-tool battery together with a step-down buck converter. These keyboards should really come with slots for Makita, Dewalt and Bosh batteries underneath by default! Oh, and also add some aluminum legs that fold out from underneath (hoping some manufacturers are reading)...

I think you will find the ES110 to be an excellent keyboard in it's price point. I should also point out to everyone that the Yamaha P125 has direct outs and cost about the same as the ES110. These are two very competitive keyboards in the under $700.00 dollar range and I will be uploading a in depth review comparison of the two.

Thank you for these reviews, they are really helpful. Have you seen Korg D1? It's in the same price bracket, but it's pretty different, as it's more of a stage piano (so it doesn't have built in speakers etc.). It also comes with a solid pedal.

In 1977 I custom ordered 12" speakers from Electro-Voice in Michigan, full range with 25 pound
magnets, eight ohms. Sitting on the music store floor with wires stuck into it, the sound was
better than any Marshall or Fender cabinet. Bose are innovators and industry leaders.
I'm not familiar with your model but I hope it's a powered bass system.

Just sent my S1 Pro back to Bose for software upgrade. Battery didn't hold charge, and Bose's upgrade installer on my iMac did not succeed. Nonetheless, it is the best sounding small gig/bluetooth speaker I have ever heard. Even without 12 hours of run time, it is worth $600. I gave up on midi keyboards, and you have almost convinced me to return. Being a string instrumentalist, you make a compelling case.

You are such an expert at this. Thank you James. I bought this model last year. It sounds a lot better with speakers, of course. It needs them I thought and got some studio speakers. Did it beat the Yamaha? :) I thought it was fine buy in the price range. I would have liked a better electric piano and organ sound too. One thing to make clear to others, the pressing of two features can happen so you can have piano with strings and combine certain sounds. The available adjustments are pretty detailed (you need the manual) and they do make a significant difference. You only do most of these adjustments intermittently. Cheers.
