Such a hot topic that goes far beyond the tarot community. You’re brave Simon 😊. I spent many years deconstructing the Judeo Christian religion, well all religion, and now I’m non theistic, an atheist. A gay atheist. In the RWS deck, there are some cards that are offputting to me, but at the same time, I remind myself that this is a historical document and was meant to portray archetypes. I think there’s a deck or close to it out there for everyone, but when an artist or producer of a tarot deck tries to please everyone it may become not only difficult but unsuccessful. So we need to just accept and love who we are and if we can’t find a tarot deck that resonates, then create your own.
I’ve been watching your channel for close to five years now Simon and I have learned so much. Thank you 🤗

      Aaaw thank you.
I think it was an interesting discretion to revisit. I suppose in part mainly as a reaction to how I felt about quite a few decks I’ve seen recently the top aimed at particular market. It certainly opens up more questions than I think there are answers.

I don't mind non-inclusive decks if they are older or more traditional. But a modern deck that doesn't include various groups is a no-go. Gender identity, age, size, color, class, all need representation. As a larger woman of 76, I'm always looking for decks with crone energy. I have decks where the characters all look like magazine models. Hate those!

I love seeing that more modern decks, are more inclusive, after years of seeing only white people on decks. Inclusive decks make me feel more comfortable, and I think they represent the real world.

To be honest I do not look to my decks to represent me, my decks speak to me of human archetypes and the journey we are all on.. As Robin said, I too adapt to the deck the deck does not need to adapt to me. I choose a deck because I love the artwork or the energy it brings. I guess I don't look at people based on gender, or their sexuality, or the disability or their race, I look at people as being human beings, and to me, the fact that we are constantly highlighting differences in the name of inclusivity is creating more of a divide than healing it. Can we not just be human beings from the human race coz that covers everyone right ? 🤷

I feel torn on the subject. With innumerable decks of animals, sea creatures, cats..where gender and other human variables aren't represented at all, we still enjoy them. As a hetero female i wouldn't mind an all male deck. 😏 And marginalized demographics will always be overly forwardly represented since they often have to force themselves into the conversation and I'm understanding of that. But to me tarot, at its best, is a tool of archetypal universal energies and i wouldn't buy a deck with the maleness archetype removed. Unbalanced.

I do have all kinds of decks, the only ones I've not been buying lately are all female or all of any one thing...just bc I'm irritated with it, lol

Yes. Not all the time… but yes.

These conversations are often focused solely on diversity, so it was nice to see the problem of exclusion being addressed. For me personally, I need both yin and yang energies in a deck. I do wonder what this says about the community that there is a large purchasing demographic that knowingly or perhaps unknowingly supports this growing trend of exclusion.

Disabilities are also important to include, and I agree with Cheryl about cultural appropriation. In both directions. You had better really have a reason to delve into another culture. But also don't put someone white into another culture. I think it's in Witches Wisdom that there is a "Shaman" who looks like a white suburban dad.
