I play it til the sun came up, man that was so long ago. I had just graduated high school that same year and was awaiting my shipping date to USMC bootcamp, 2 month after Skyrim released.

@@TheRealUcanUwillmy original post disappeared. I won't type it all again but: When you get to the point that Skyrim is starting to annoy you, start modding. You can turn into anything, fix anything you don't like. Modding Skyrim is a game all of its own.
Hope its that good and hope they don't just give in to online like they did with 5. They will obviously to some degree but we lost a lot of single player content so they can just do the cash cow
No single player content foooor sure , red dead redemption 2 is a good example its the perfect setting for dlc , the first one with the undead dlc was crazy good but now what's selling the most is the online aspect same with gta5 , there is a reason rockstar tested some gta+ features on gta5 , i'm almost 99% sure that rockstar will lock some of the content/features behind some big grind or you can pay for gta+ and they will balance this so perfectly that people will just accept it !
Sure but that works both ways. Plenty of sales were because of suburban parents being like, "what console will be good for the whole family to enjoy?" And then one of the adverts says, "comes with interactive exercise; pretend to beat the shit out of a virtual training dummy, with your real hands!" Which winds up being a decently compelling argument. Like I've been in plenty of households where the only thing the Wii ever gets used for is Wii Bowling. Not like people keep it around to play Smash Bros, like a GameCube... basically no one is playing Brawl.
If it sold well, it wouldn't have anything to do with sales, since it was bundled. The fact it sold well, means it sold outside the bundle..that's how I take it.
What should really be studied are the the companies that have these 50 million + games sold and then change strategies and go against everything that the fans loved about those games with a new game expecting the same result! Then blaming the fans when it doesn't happen!
Examples? What games have reached that milestone, had a change in strategy resulting in not reaching that milestone again? Quite frankly, there aren't many games (with the possible exception of Nintendo games) having consistent sales (with multiple entries) in that 50+ category in the first place.
@@Raivo_K My question was what games with multiple entries had had a change in strategy that resulted in not reaching that 50+ milestone again. To be fair, you've technically a point with Cyberpunk 2077 considering it's the same developer, but if a game is released broken on release, that broken release being lied about, only to have that release removed from the PlayStation storefront, even, yeah, that's definitely a 50+ milestone hindrance. Fallout 76 (nor Fallout 4, for that matter) never reached 50+ units sold. However, you nailed it in regards to Bethesda being one of the developers blaming their audiences as to why that developer's game isn't faring well critically or sales wise.
It’s because corporations greed (I know cpt obviously) … potentially profits from consumers < money from investors, who also are corporations with unknown real owner. So developers don’t care about lost loyalty clients and they money… it’s complicated but also simple, „investors” not only push agenda but also creating cashflow (in really only rewrite numbers in banking system) for own profits. Games like every popular media was taken for 1% people who are own 99% resources for gain more power and money and control society.
@@Joreel I have never played Minecraft, Fortnite, and I have only played like 5 minutes of GTA5. My love for Rockstar ended with San Andreas, I loved that game, it was the time, but I basically never played GTA4 and 5, never played RDR, basically cause of no PC supper ever, and RDR2 I think is like most overrated thing of all time, IDK.
Another reason Wii Sports has done so well is that it's an almost perfect game for physical and occupational therapy for older adults, so many Assisted living facilities have it for their residence to keep them active.
See this is the comment I was looking for! I still have my Wii sports disc in a paper sleeve. Almost no one bought the game itself cause it was always bundled with something you needed. The Wii's sales figures are Wii sports' sales figures.
As much of a point as this may be, it was still played as much as the other titles on the list. A lot of people don't remember how hard it was to get away for like a year and a half.
RDR2 is my favourite video game of all time. It got me out of a serious dark place, and that just shows the impact actually well done games can have on someone. Still now, sometimes, when I feel like I need to escape, I turn that game on and play for a few hours. After 3 years (got the game in 2021), it still helps me and I NEVER get bored of playing it.
But that is counting all the versions of tetris, no? Doesn't seem fair, since it would be like counting all of the GTA series as a single game.. not really, but kinda..
@RMC_ i would put tetris at one...i see your point with gta however gta changed a lot ... all those small changes has made gta where tetris is basically the same game....the small changes hasn't changed the game experience where each gta has a different experience....tetris is a different animal because how do you count the sales? in the end tetris is number one.
For anyone unaware the new HD Reworked mod comes out for Witcher 3 on November 23 and there are several comparison videos up already, it looks fantastic.
My stepson was playing Minecraft pretty heavily. Momma bear wanted me to check it out to make sure it was appropriate. Something happened that lead to momma bear upset I spent too much time on the computer and stepson was begging for his screentime. Not sure what happened.
Huh? It took you that long to realise rockstars the only company that cares ?, literally carried PS1 with the best everything in terms of progression, happened on PS2, PS3 with GTA 4, ps4 GTA5 ps4 blew everything else away again same as all other games that they did before that . and so wouldve the rdr2 ps5 if they didn't quit it to work on gta6 first
I'm playing Skyrim heavily modded. The mod community such as the team for Beyond Skyrim and Legacy of the Dragonborn have really kept it going. Same applies to Minecraft too. The fans kept them going.
THIS! The game modding community is arguably the greatest reason why Skyrim has joined other titles (such as Minecraft) as "a game that will never die"! Seriously, the Skywind & Tamriel Rebirth mod projects alone stagger the mind in terms of scope of planning, level of effort & length of time expended, both in service of realizing the game world of Morrowind to a degree Bethesda would not consider doable....
I remember when Skyrim came out. I live in South Africa so it was summer when it released and school had just closed for our 7 week holiday. I was 15, played sports and was active, but I ended up staying inside playing this game for the entire summer. Every day, morning to morning. Had no social life those few weeks and it was one of the best summers of my life.
Animal Cross also blew up in the meme world too. The wholesome exchange between them and the Doom franchise was like the golden moment of internet wholesomeness. All the memes, fanart and a freakin music video of it all. You couldn't help but laugh and smile.
And it looks like it came out this year. 😊 I swear. On my XSX. It has to go above 30fps. There is no chance it isn't at least boosting up to like 45fps or 50fps. There is nothing there to tell us, but I swear. I play 30fps games all thd time and on XSX. RDR2 has to boost over 30fps. It is so confusing to me how it is actually 30fps. I simply can not believe that. Nope. It is above. 😂
I’m playing it for the first time (almost finished). It’s amazing how well it all holds up. Even the graphics are still often impressive enough that I’ll just wander around and take in the sights, and that’s just the PS4 version. Definitely an all time classic.
@@momsspaghetti4064because you need to get a PC. Xbox just cannot handle a game that big with 60+ fps. Consoles are just 10+ year old PC hardware. RDR2 on the PC is a mind blowing experience.
My dream would be that GTA 6 single player is the same quality, if not better, as RDR 2's single player. I loved GTA V's single player game but I wish it had a lot more to it.
Rockstar saw how much money they can milk people for on GTA online, which is billions and billions, they have zero incentive to make a story as good as RDR2. Unfortunately it’s going to have a short story will FULL STEAM AHEAD on shark cards and goofy microtransactions. There’s no doubt in my mind.
In a way I feel like Wii Sports was to the Wii what Beat Saber is to VR currently... Quick matches, easy to explain, and it's an easy way to introduce players to a new and unusual controller concept. Same way that whenever one of my friends or family now wants to experience VR I think "Well... maybe Beat Saber..." back then if they wanted to try the wii it was "How about Wii Sports" Of course, the multiplayer/party game aspect also helped a lot for group events and such

One big boost to sales for the Witcher 3 was a timeline issue. When the Netflix Witcher series was announced, CDPR did what from a single sale standpoint might seem bad...but from a tidal wave was good. Witcher 3 was on Steam. The Netflix series was announced and suddenly you could get the Witcher 3 through Steam for just over 14 bucks. That was an absolute steal. AND for an additional 3 bucks...you could pick up both Heart of Stone and Blood and Wine DLCs. What had been selling for about 40+ bucks could be obtained for under 20...with all the bells and whistles. When Witcher 3 first came out, my old computer simply couldn't handle it. When the Witcher series was announced but BEFORE it actually came out, I had a much better computer and I snatched up the Witcher series immediately. And I suspect a LOT of other people did too. After the short term period of that deal, the price went back up to 39.99....and they told everyone the bargain price had a limited time. That was six years ago and most people who want the Witcher 3 already have it by now. Which is why you can now buy it for about 9.99 and the complete set with the two DLC's for 12.49. Still a bargain. But the post Netflix bargain had to create a massive spike in sales.
On Skryrim I agree. Morrowind was the first game that I was just blown away from the scope and discovery. Best first play through of any game ever for me.
RDR2 is Rockstar’s magnum opus. GTA6 will not come close to RDR2 in terms of writing, story, characters, etc. Rockstar isn’t the same without the Housers and Benzies.
Three things 1) Wii sports. Can't double dip on console and game sales. Pick one. Or split it 2) Surprised Tetris didn't make this list with it's 615 million downloads (yes, this include the Gameboy bundled versions) 3) Microsoft bought and ported Minecraft to .... the Windows phone
Afternoon from the UK, Jake!! I only have one copy of Skyrim. As for RDR2, I want the first on pc before I go for the second. I'm a little surprised that Wii Play didn't make this list as it was one of the games bundled with the Wii. Like Wii Sports. Anyway, you and Falcon put out S-tier vids. Thanks for that! Laters.
I remember my dad once told me he had friend who was a game dev, and appearently at the time he told my dad he was working on a cowboy game in the style of GTA. This was about a year or so before RDR 2 was even teased. I never believed my dad, and when the game was finally announced I lost my shit! I remember my dad simply giving me this "i told you so" look. Never doubted the old man again lol
I remember my first time playing Minecraft more than 10 years ago. I turned it on in the morning, forgot about breakfast, lunch and dinner and only realized that it might be a long time around midnight. I turned it off, stood up and smashed my table with my fist at full force trying to break it and pack it into my pocket lol. Then I slept and saw a cube world in my dreams. I don't think any other game ever had such an immersive effect on me.
This is such a minor thing, but I think your title is a bit confusing on this video. You’re investigating 10 games that sold 50+ million copies, not 10 reasons per game. Regardless, great video!
If Rockstar somehow manage to get that sweet spot for GTA VI between the fast action mayhem from GTA V and the detailed/heavy movement from RDR2, that would be nice.
By the time The Witcher Netlfix series aired in 2018, The Witcher 3 was getting on Steam sales for really cheap. In Brazil it can be bought by 10 Reais on a sale, which is equivalent to 2U$.
I've bought Terraria 3x so far. It's the game I go back to when none of the new releases are doing it for me. Brings out the creative streak, and there are just so many secrets at this point.
I just played The Witcher 3 for the first time this year plus it's DLC. Started in January and finished mid-March. What a game, man. Im playng through Cyberpunk right now and unfortunately I can't say it's a 10/10 like The Witcher 3. I read every note, every Bestiary update, got invested heavily in the all the lore, and I thought the balance of a huge open world with many side quests and a segmented story in between is the best I've ever seen. I played every single day without ever getting bored, and I even bought the books right after I finished the game. I really hope and trust that they can evolve the formula with Cyberpunk 2, cause there's a lot of GREAT stuff there but I do have a lot of problems with it. Like why did they put so many data shards in the game??? I want to learn more about the world and lore, but you can find 5 in one room and they're all very long reads. And, Im 20 hours in and have read 1-2 interesting ones, I stopped reading them at this point cause I've heard from a few people it's not worth it in the end to read all of them.
Witcher 3: no it’s multiple rereleases is the main reason it hit 50M. Great game, yes. But let’s be real Skyrim: same as W3😅 Wii Sports: it was bundled with the system…can you really count that🤨 GTA5: ok this one likely hit 50M on its first release😅 Minecraft: …same as GTA5🤣
Not going to lie I was one of the first original pre orders for the Witcher 3 and got my money back when they pushed it back and I went and pre ordered it again when it came available. I’ve beaten that game so many times and I do not regret buying it on PlayStation Xbox and steam.
I have never tried motion controls, but it looks so awful, I can't imagine playing ''Tennis'' or "Golf" on Wii, it looks so terrible, I refuse to believe input is any good there, you jsut swing and hope for the best.
It's weird that he never mentioned Wii Sports was a pack-in game since launch, but he did mention Mario Kart 8 DX, even though that's only a pack-in game in special bundles (usually around the holidays).
@@mrbrightside2937 Almost every game is cracked. They never crack FIFA games somehow, but basically any game you can pirate. Yesterday, Russians already cracked Metaphor, and its a DENUVO game, so paying customers has to deal with DENUVO performance and anti cheat issues it always has, when cracked version doesn't. Fighting piracy is stupid, because its an enemy you can't beat, most people who pirate wont buy the game either way, its just their way of life, when you fight piracy, you only hurt actual customers.
between my husband and I - over the years and device upgrades - we have six copies of Skyrim. I just got my first gaming pc and I am having so much fun playing through the game again. its still worth it to me.
So many games followed the Witcher 3s lead and developed their own little versions of witcher 3. Ever developer changed their games model to reflect Witcher 3 and it never came close but it definitely improved so many franchises. Absolutely my favorite game
I loved all the Witcher and Elder Scrolls games and played through them multiple times, but RDR2 is a game I've started several times and just wandered away from because I found it boring. Once I think I got as far as 12-15 hours in and just couldn't force myself to go on.
I feel the same way. I just knew i would love that game because I liked RDR1 alot but it got boring quick and I just wandered around the map doing more hunting and fishing than doing missions. I wish they'd do a remake of the old LucasArts Outlaws game.
I upgraded my PC three weeks ago, I had a huge backlog of games and #1 on my list was RDR2... so I immediately bought it and... now I'm thinking of buying something else... game is beautiful and detailed and... I feel bored... I thought there is someting wrong with me, but I don't have much fun, I don't feel excited about playing it at all, I remember playing witcher 3, I couldn't wait to start playing, I couldn't put it down... RDR2 feels like a chore... before I was playing days gone and I had way more fun
Honorable mention should be last of us. Sold 30 million copies and thats just on PlayStation. Think how much it could have sold if it was on all consoles.
Skyrim, i think, was the last game i ever played without internet access or use of the web. Bought a physical copy for Xbox 360 at Gamestop, popped it in, and played the hell out of it. No updates. No DLC. No stupid cosmetics shops or Battle Pass. Just me and my game. I miss that. And God am i getting old.
I never knew you can separately by Tetris, it just was on every hand held gaming console at the time. I sure played many versions of Tetris, but I never bought Tetris.
I’m CLEARLY in the minority on this one … but I never was interested in Minecraft. I’m just not into a building simulator, I’m into, you know, VIDEO GAMES. These things that have plots and characters with a narrative and levels and bosses, you know, actual long standing video game elements! Now I know what people will say, “Minecraft has all of those things!” yeah except NOBODY plays it for those reasons. They just kind hashed on those things pretty lazily to give it some semblance of a game that has a beginning, middle and end. And, yes, I know there are Minecraft spinoffs that actually do play like video games and I know the community has created adventures you can play within the main Minecraft game by joining specific servers but this is all BESIDES the main product that is Minecraft. I would dare say 95% of people playing Minecraft either have not bothered with or are just not interested in playing a Minecraft with a beginning, middle and end with well developed characters and a plot, they just want to build and that’s totally fine … it’s just not for me.
I agree with everything you said... Also... To this day I'm still shocked that people choose to play a game that looks so crazy terrible with purposefully being puxelated like Minecraft on modern consoles and PC's that can do insane impressive graphics. Like why? Lol
I've played Minecraft, mostly online with my husband, and I honestly found it rather... limiting. Building was encouraged and you had all sorts of blocks with different textures, yet you couldn't actually build stuff without blowing it hugely out of proportions (meaning your little guy was way too small to use any of it effectively). You had barely any furniture you could place in your nicely built house and if you wanted to make other stuff, you had to find ways to cheat around the system (like using fence posts, spider silk and carpets to make something that looked like a table... instead of giving us actual tables. They gave us beds, why no tables, chairs or proper shelves?) I can have 1000 different colour beds and 100 types of wood textures, but I can't make an armchair without having to use stairs and half-blocks? Why is my chandelier made from fences and my bedside table a scaffold? Also, once you've been in a cave or biome, you've been in all of them. I'm not a fan of procedurally generated stuff most of the time, so I got bored rather quickly. I knew what to expect everywhere. And for such a big game, updates and content were added really sparingly. What do you mean, we have to vote on which mob gets added after 1+ years? Just add all of them and give us some more actual content! So while it was entertaining enough for a little in the beginning, it's not the type of game I was ale to play for hundreds of hours, nor could I really live out my creativity.
I mean, you're right. People play Minecraft because it is a sandbox. You can do whatever you want in it and, for many, following some linear storyline isn't something they always want. So, when they don't, they play Minecraft. That's the appeal of it.
I have bought Skyrim, I think, 6 times for different platforms. Last was for Xbox Special Edition. Last played on XSX. Now it's on Gamepass, so my 7th edition was free. 😅 Damn it. Lmao
I feel like gta6 online will be a huge turn point for the industry because i'm almost sure its gonna be a mix of grindy and features/content locked behind gta+ , there is now way a company put 1billion$+ into a game just to not milk the entire fan base for years , it's gonna be almost perfectly balance i'm almost sure just enough to be grindy but not too much and just enough for you to think "well why not a little shark card or gta+ sub" i'm hype but kinda of afraid too because i know single player dlc are long gone and the focus is on the multiplayer aspect
At 08:06... Yeah I'm guilty. Bought Skyrim for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, PSVR, and PC. I was part of the problem, but I've decided I'm not buying any more Skyrims until I get ES6
RDR2 is 6 years old and still nothing has come close to it. I think I’ve spent more time in Skyrim or Witcher 3, due to their more RPG mechanics and replay ability, but I believe RDR2 is the best game of all time. The level of craft and effort that went into even the tiniest little details is immense
With Terraria we also have to take into account all the colabs/updates over the years, the small meme of "final updates". Nevermind the stuff player made mod that expand on the game. Minecraft the no brainer #1, tons of updates to it, the relaxing craft/gather loop. And with the player made mods hell games made in it... it could be said to own devkit.
Playing Wii Sports with my kid back during the Wii heyday is a core memory for me. Bowling especially (he was a LITTLE too into whaling on us in the boxing ring! Little scamp.)
I remember playing Skyrim back in the day and when this happened @7:28 I accidently used my shout. It knocked the guy out and killed him, saving woman. It changes outcome in the game a little and how people react to you in town.
The Witcher 3 came on the back of the first 2, the first one was great when it came out, might look dated now but it was praised on release, the 2nd took the Universe further with a gameplay overhaul and console release, great game
What happened to the dismemberments in the Witcher 3? After the update RT they seem to have been coded out of the game or is everyone intentionally turning them off for YT? I remember there being an option, but now wondering if they got rid of it all together because no one used to disable it in any video in the past.
I have the Witcher 3 on PS4 and PC. I have Skyrim on Xbox360 and PS4 and PC. I have RDR2 on PS4 and PC. I have GTA5 on Xbox360 and PS4 and PC. There is one game I bought even more copies for though and that is Dark Souls 2. I bought the original release for the Xbox 360. Then I upgraded to Xbox One and bought the Scholar of the First Sin Edition for it. I then switched to PS4 and bought the SOTFS edition for it again and then after moving on to PC, I bought it for PC as well. People always think I am crazy for buying that game so many times, but they call me nuts when they find out I got all achievements/trophies for it on every platform I played it. I love DS2.
Witcher 3 also had Skyrim to build up the market for it. I remember I was playing only Skyrim couple of hours a day for more than a year then there was a Witcher 3 with the same feel, almost same gameplay, same world building but prettier and also a breath of fresh air, so I also started that and almost got expelled from university :D. The difference is I was playing Skyrim for couple of years and Witcher 3 for a single playthrough, but these two games were interconnected for me.

And then one of the adverts says, "comes with interactive exercise; pretend to beat the shit out of a virtual training dummy, with your real hands!" Which winds up being a decently compelling argument.
Like I've been in plenty of households where the only thing the Wii ever gets used for is Wii Bowling. Not like people keep it around to play Smash Bros, like a GameCube... basically no one is playing Brawl.
Mine came with just dance.
Wii sports is a really great game, but the real reason why it sold so much it's because it came along with the console
Thank you! I felt crazy that he didn't mention that
True, but I also know a few people who bought a Wii just to play Wii Sports. So I think it went the other way, as well
I was just coming here to say this 🤣 it was a pack on for the Wii in literally every territory except Japan 🤣
If it sold well, it wouldn't have anything to do with sales, since it was bundled. The fact it sold well, means it sold outside the bundle..that's how I take it.
@@Simmo3D nope, the bundled ones count as sales. And no one would need to buy it unless they lost the disc since it came with all Wiis
What should really be studied are the the companies that have these 50 million + games sold and then change strategies and go against everything that the fans loved about those games with a new game expecting the same result! Then blaming the fans when it doesn't happen!
😔
Examples? What games have reached that milestone, had a change in strategy resulting in not reaching that milestone again? Quite frankly, there aren't many games (with the possible exception of Nintendo games) having consistent sales (with multiple entries) in that 50+ category in the first place.
@@DanteMasaru CDPR with CP2077 and Bethesda with first FO76 and then with Starfield. These are just of the top of my head.
I’ve been recovering from surgery this week, and your vids have helped get me thru! Much appreciated!
Man RDR2 and Witcher 3, those games always have a special place in my heart
W3 is my favorite game ever, but RDR2 I do not like at all.
I loved both of these games, Minecraft was a game I tried and thought was so stupid. My son on the other hand loved Minecraft.
@@Joreel I have never played Minecraft, Fortnite, and I have only played like 5 minutes of GTA5.

I was confused by this too, there are sequels like Wii sports Resort, and you could buy Wii sports, but it came with every console outside of Japan.

You forgot about Tetris. Over 500 million sold.
Tetris was the game of Century.
I don't think it counts if you include every iteration of a game rather than just sales of the original.
And it hasn’t aged a day
For anyone unaware the new HD Reworked mod comes out for Witcher 3 on November 23 and there are several comparison videos up already, it looks fantastic.

RDR2 is still the top 5 most beautiful game worlds ever (in my opinion). It also really hooks you in emotionally.
Witcher 3 is helped by the fact it’s discounted to $5 on steam every other week. It was also free on PSN.
9:41 Red dead redemption 2 is 6 years old 😢
And it looks like it came out this year. 😊
I swear.
It still ends up beating todays game in almost every perspective
@@momsspaghetti4064because you need to get a PC. Xbox just cannot handle a game that big with 60+ fps. Consoles are just 10+ year old PC hardware. RDR2 on the PC is a mind blowing experience.

My dream would be that GTA 6 single player is the same quality, if not better, as RDR 2's single player.
I loved GTA V's single player game but I wish it had a lot more to it.
If they made it dark like gta 4 it would be great
Rockstar saw how much money they can milk people for on GTA online, which is billions and billions, they have zero incentive to make a story as good as RDR2.
Same way that whenever one of my friends or family now wants to experience VR I think "Well... maybe Beat Saber..." back then if they wanted to try the wii it was "How about Wii Sports"
Of course, the multiplayer/party game aspect also helped a lot for group events and such

Stardew Valley may not have sold 50 million copies, but its one of the biggest success stories of gaming in my book atleast. :]

This has been said before, but R* disrespected themselves and RDR2 for completely ditching it. Along with the online mode.

One reason people wanted the escapism of Animal Crossing so much was COVID. Having that world to live in for a bit and hang out with friends was huge.
This is such a minor thing, but I think your title is a bit confusing on this video. You’re investigating 10 games that sold 50+ million copies, not 10 reasons per game. Regardless, great video!

I'm kinda sad that elden ring hasn't sold 50+ million copies yet but I'm hoping that one day it does cause that game is incredible.

Thought #1 would have been Tetris
I never knew you can separately by Tetris, it just was on every hand held gaming console at the time. I sure played many versions of Tetris, but I never bought Tetris.
Part of Skyrim’s success is how iconic the mods were. A lot of people became interested in game modding because of Skyrim.
Same, I feel you. Fromsoft games 💪

Terraria’s steady stream of massive free content updates over the years also probably helped.
I appreciate the clip of Link winning the race in Mario Kart 8… because that’s definitely my racer lol 😅
