I saw Dragonslayer in theaters as a kid and recalled it being a little slow but finished strong with a rousing final act. Fast forward to my recent watch via this 4K release and I found it to be a practical effects masterpiece with a wittier than I remembered screenplay. Peter MacNicol was also surprisingly effective. This is a film that deserves to be rediscovered.
I've only seen dragon slayer on 4:3 television back in the day and it looked so bad. It was actually hard to watch because of foggy darkness. I mean it looked actually blurry. I do remember the story itself igniting my imagination as a child though
Great selection I love that you included the Maltese falcon in your top years list at 85 years old and to have it restored and available on 4K the director alone would be proud of you it truly is one of the best films ever.

Maltese hawk was insta buy for me when i hear that it was made at 4K. Those classics done right are reason why 4K is must for me. They really make those old classics to shine!
Hackers was one of my favorite restorations of the year. Absolutely beautiful. The computer animations from then look better than a lot of the ones you see today.
A nice list and it has been a superb year! One that realy impressed me was the 4k restoration of Steven Spielberg’s TV film - Duel. I love that film and have done since watching it on TV at my grandparents as a child. Looks absolutely stunning on 4k.
I don’t know if After Hours is a hidden gem, since it is such a classic, but it does seem to be an under rated film by Scorsese. One crazy movie in a good way.👍😁
Yeah, I’m really late to the party on that one. I watched it a couple weeks ago for the first time, and it’s honestly probably my favorite Scorsese film at the moment.
DUEL (1971) on 4K Blu-ray is one you should review sometime! The Atmos upgrade blew me away, especially during the opening credits when the car is going in and out of the highway tunnels. My other 4K favorites from this year are The Prince of Egypt and The Fugitive, both terrific classics that need no further explanation. Don't have Oppenheimer yet on 4K, but hopefully soon! I agree with a lot of your list. Two of mine, that aren't on your list, are Spider- Man: Across The Spiderverse, & Puss In Boots The Last Wish. These are amazing on 4k!

I bought Clue and it was definitely worth the upgrade. I am tempted to get Phantasm. Fargo? Not so sure. Same with Next Gen films. I don't know that I like them enough to upgrade. I have upgrade on ST I, II, III, IV and VI. I haven't done that with V. I would if the price gets really low. That's a movie I need to be very drunk to enjoy.
2023 was the year I finally got a 4K TV--a Sony OLED that just makes EVERYTHING look amazing. When I was buying my pile of movies to watch on it, I used your older "Best of the Year" videos to make some decisions, and I have not been disappointed. My personal list of best-looking discs from 2023 include The Mandalorian (compared to the D+ version, the 4K feels like looking through a window), Elemental (especially the HDR), and Avatar: The Way of Water. It's a REALLY great feeling to know that 4K has gotten so good that very few releases are "bad" like T2 or Pirates. It feels like, these days, if a film gets a 4K, it's always worth picking up over Blu-ray.
4Ks used to be the no-brainer go-to choice over blu-rays. Until we hit 2023 like a brick wall, that is. Worst record in skips and freezes in the history of 4K. Now those "mere" blu-rays are looking a whole lot better.
Paul Verhoven is an absolute genius: Showgirls, Robocop, Starship Troopers, Total Recall… all classics. Check out his newest one called Benedetta too it’s amazing

Pissed I missed the limited edition of the texas chainsaw massacre, but I grabbed their basic copy and the transfer is incredible. That studio is badass, and I plan on getting the Witch soon. One of my favourite films the past decade, up there with Mandy.
'The Fugitive' is great...'Dragonslayer' ( saw it in theatres!) is also great ! 'JFK' might look great, but Oliver Stone just beats you over the head w/ his message.
I got the Collector's Edition of Avatar and Avatar The Way of Water on 4K. It's a nice box set, but the disc is tricky to get out. I had to pull them out with my thumb and finger. It leaves a fingerprint, and there are some smudges. I cleaned it with a cloth and pop it in, and it works fine. Dolby Atmos is only on the Theatrical Cut and 5.1 surround sound for the Special Edition and Extended cut, which I thought it was odd. The bonus features are ported from the old Blu-ray set and the new bonus features from the June release of Avatar. The Way of Water has an extra disc of bonus features.
I completely agree about Showgirls. Sadly I missed this Limited.. but ever since the movie came out I thought it was a masterpiece. It's quite shocking to me how many clowned on it.. I NEVER understood it and was always like "are we even watching the same movie here?". Probably seen it 50 times

One of my favourites from the year and one that for some reason didn't get much attention was Akira Kurosawa's Dreams from the Criterion Collection. An incredible film from a director that needs no introduction, and a jaw-dropping 4K.
Saw Showgirls in the theater in my early 20s w/ friends, everyone else in the theater were elderly couples... ?!?!?!?!? Still hits me as weird these decades later. Have a great 2024 man!
Two that I liked this year: Rudy impressed me. The picture was solid, but the audio gave my sound system a real workout. Also, Clue. It's one of my all time favorite movies, but has an infamous history of lazy restorations on disc. The new 4K doesn't make it look like a whole new movie or anything, but it is definitely the best it has ever looked. I didn't love the audio track which seemed a bit pitchy at times, but definitely appreciated the upgraded video quality.

I hope to build my 4k collection this year but I promised myself that I'd go for the films I love or have nostalgia for and upgrade those, OR only ones that have great reviews and great worthwhile transfers, so I love your channel for this, it helps me decide what to go for and if a film I like is or isn't worth transferring to 4k. i just added the blues brothers to my collection but I want to pick up wizard of oz, beetlejuice, District 9, the goonies and willy wonka and the chocolate factory hopefully this week
I saw Showgirls on opening night with a packed house of college coeds and it was a blast of a theatrical experience. Although the best line of the evening came from an apparent MBA student in the audience who yelled out “what the hell am I doing here?!?” after Kyle McLaughlin’s character tells Nomi that the MBA he obtained in college is a useless degree. 😂

If you have any retro consoles, or even non 4k consoles, i think you should review the retro tink 4k. It is expensive but is probably a device you will use for 10+ years if you like retro games (or if your family does)
While I admit I’m heavily biased, my favorite 4K release of the year has to be Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It still remains one of the best Batman stories ever, and it has never looked or sounded as good as this. Plus, there’s a really nice 25 minute special feature honoring the late Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman for 30 years.
Happy New year - my personal best of the year was The Warriors by Arrow Video, it has just overtaken The Proposition (BFI) as the best in my collection. I know it is only just out, but I would recommend getting on it. I would also say the UK release of Enter the Dragon (which contains all the bonus features the US release didn't get for some reason) is up there too. Loved your list, going to make buying The Fugitive my next priority, thanks for posting, have a great 2024.
I also have Showgirls and Invaders in my top 10 of the year. Mainly cause I try and look at all of it, from transfer to the box, special features, etc.

I don't ALWAYS agree with your opinion (Showgirls sucked lol) on everything, but your platform is #1 for physical media and it's not close. Wishing you the best in 2024!
There are a BUNCH of other REALLY GOOD physical media review channels out there, but @FilmsAtHome is SOLIDLY my FAVORITE. That said, this is entirely YOUR list Jeff...but I was REALLY suprised that NEITHER Across the Spiderverse nor John Wick Chapter 4 made this list (after the absolutely reviews that you gave them). And (again, totally YOUR list), but it just kinda felt lacking your not "ranking" your picks as #1-10 on this Top 10 (food for thought). Dragonslayer! What a beautiful piece fo art this 4K disc. Vermithrax! Still the best dragon in the History of Cinema.

If you have any retro consoles, or even non 4k consoles, i think you should review the retro tink 4k. It is expensive but is probably a device you will use for 10+ years if you like retro games (or if your family does)

While I admit I’m heavily biased, my favorite 4K release of the year has to be Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It still remains one of the best Batman stories ever, and it has never looked or sounded as good as this. Plus, there’s a really nice 25 minute special feature honoring the late Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman for 30 years.
Dragonslayer is so, so good, and this release is fantastic!!

Happy New year - my personal best of the year was The Warriors by Arrow Video, it has just overtaken The Proposition (BFI) as the best in my collection. I know it is only just out, but I would recommend getting on it. I would also say the UK release of Enter the Dragon (which contains all the bonus features the US release didn't get for some reason) is up there too. Loved your list, going to make buying The Fugitive my next priority, thanks for posting, have a great 2024.
I also have Showgirls and Invaders in my top 10 of the year.
Mainly cause I try and look at all of it, from transfer to the box, special features, etc.
Titanic would definitely make my top 10 2023 list.

Thanks for the content this year, sir. The varied content you give us is great and this list is a perfect example of boutique and mainstream. I don't ALWAYS agree with your opinion (Showgirls sucked lol) on everything, but your platform is #1 for physical media and it's not close. Wishing you the best in 2024!

There are a BUNCH of other REALLY GOOD physical media review channels out there, but @FilmsAtHome is SOLIDLY my FAVORITE.
That said, this is entirely YOUR list Jeff...but I was REALLY suprised that NEITHER Across the Spiderverse nor John Wick Chapter 4 made this list (after the absolutely reviews that you gave them).
And (again, totally YOUR list), but it just kinda felt lacking your not "ranking" your picks as #1-10 on this Top 10 (food for thought).
