- After Dan repaired a crack in a Gibson acoustic guitar the finish didn’t look to good. Dan teaches you how to blend new lacquer with old lacquer using a “flash coat” for a nice near invisible repair.

Thanks Dan. We need more people with a mindset or "repairing" and "recycling" because the old-world workmanship and materials are slipping away every day.. a real shame to lose these things..
I Love Dan. His method of teaching us Guitar repair, and finishing is beyond words. I bought his books in the early to mid 90s, and started doing set ups, nut repairs, intonation, etc. His methods are a valuable recourse for do it yourself Guitarists. Thanks Dan
He's just a genius!! I always love his job, he's so precise and has years and years of knowledge and practice, I love that this kind of stuff lays around the world via youtube
oh, and shout out to all you guys, and ladies, this is one of the most incredible gatherings of folks. everyone is very polite and mannerly. that tickles my fancy. peace, y'all.
I searched your channel for this process about two weeks ago when I was unsure of how to blend into the old lacquer. Pretty much figured it out but now I'm glad to see how you mix it so that next time I'll do better. Thanks for these awesome lessons.
It's about time someone put up a video on how to do this. One of the hardest things to do - and do right - in the repair business IMO. Thanks for all you do for us Dan.
i know Im quite off topic but does anybody know of a good website to watch new tv shows online?
@Maddux Princeton I dunno try flixportal. Just google after it:) -christian
@Christian Ruben thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :D I appreciate it !!
@Maddux Princeton You are welcome :)
Thanks Dan. I always enjoy your videos. Have really picked up a lot of helpful tips and tricks over the ages.
Have a blessed day my friend.
I love this company they only use and have the best including there staff great video thanks
I don't even play guitar, but I love this channel so much!! Lots of transferable lifehacks by the best teachers. You're all so passionate about your craft, and every video is such a delight. :)
I'm always amazed how easy it is to study stuff at university but I'll never be as good as Dan at laquering. Not even talking about all the other guitar maker and repairman tricks he's got up his sleeve.
This type of advise is unlike any other luthier advice out there (that I have seen). This is the sought of "next level " repair that is documented now and referred to years later (perhaps when the guitar is sold) but never detectable by the naked eye.
Dan, you're an ace man. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I know that I for one, sure do appreciate it. you're a world and a wealth of information.
Dan, you are a Genius! EXCELLENT work.
Thanks this helps. Trying to figure out how to do this to an entire Yamaha old acoustic body that was sanded down.
Formula1 scratch out is fantastic stuff. Try it for final polish and melting. It works!
As always, thank you Dan!
Dan rules!
As always, Dan - YOU DA MAN!
Beautiful work partner
this is what I've been lookin for. thanks dan!
I have a 1964 Hankstrom Viking that needs three same attention
I foolishly started to sand my Les Paul’s neck, and realized that it wasn’t a very good idea. The result is a couple skid marks through the lacquer down to the wood on a couple spots. I tried repairing myself with Stewmac nitro clear gloss pens, and some 10,000 grit sandpaper, but After watching this video, it’s apparent i better leave the repair to a professional. Thanks.
* * * Dan...I have 2 Martin guitars...a 2004 D-16R and a 2012 OM-18 Custom...I have owned bought both guitars bard new...I have treated both guitars exactly the same...rarely play them and when I do....wipe the down and put them back in the case. The 2004 D-16R is in near Mint condition while the OM-18 Custom is covered with about 20 "finish cracks. I live on the California Central coast that has an average humidity of 50-60%...Neither of these guitars has been in "extreme temperature changes. I have seen on different guitar forms that lot of people with a "2012 Martin" are having the same problem with "Lacquer Cracks / Checking" especially at the Bridge calling them "Martin Bridge Whiskers" which I also have. Any thoughts and is it worth repairing? I have seen a video on here where *Goodalll* is not using a different Lacquer Finish now and Collings...Santa Cruz and Huss and Dalton are all looking at changing theirs. Thanks...Ron
Awesome job. I always wanted a Gibson like that. I think there nice picking guitars. My cousin has one just like it. There nice. Thanks for sharing your video.
a few years ago I bought a long shafted buffer from grizzlr. One speed. fast...very fast. I didnt know any better but the shaft rotated up. As I was buffing out my latest guitar, the buffer grabbed and my handiwork went flying across the shop...lol I did learn tho.
Nice work ... thanks for sharing stewartmacdonald
An absolute magician!!
beautiful work!
Excellent thanks Dan
Can we get a video on doing this for a clear finish? Not a small section like the chip video, but larger repairs like this one. If its even possible that is, I know luthiers are hesitant about that sort of thing
Great idea. I'll pass this along to our video folks.
Absolutely amazing!
Nice work!
As always Dan NICE!!
So I’ve always been told to wait three weeks before you sand and buff why is that?
another great video. thanks
Does anyone know how to contact Dan? I would love to send him work, as I have this exact issue on a black guitar.
masterful
I would like to put black lacquer on a martin OOO15 mahogany. Is it possible
First it looks like you’ve updated your flash coat mix from 3 parts lacquer and 1 part thinner. Second, it looks like you’ve got a more advanced spray booth from just the air filter on the slow moving exhaust fan. I might be watching your videos too much at this point lol
I haven't been able to find a video explaining how to make, for example, a color design in a lacquer finished guitar.
I'm painting my guitar with black nitro lacquer and I'd like to make a purple design.
What materials and how do I create the paint, if I painted the whole guitar with nitro lacquer in spray?
thanks!
Get purple lacquer and then make a stencil of your design. Spray the purple through the stencil with a couple light coats, just enough to get uniformity of color. Then coat the whole thing with lots of nitro clear, several coats. After several days wet sand with 800 through 2500 then buff
Does this Luthier take on electric guitar projects from users?
He's been making electric guitars since 1969. Go to his website erlewineguitars.com.
Thanks for the info.
That's Mark Erlewine, Dan's cousin. Mark has owned the business since 1972. Dan was a partner originally, but since '72 has had no affiliation with it.
Great Job but too much work. I’m using My flexi seal tape
what is recharger?
looks like a lot of work
Bring back Jerry
This is great if you live in America but in the UK we have these RoHS rules that mean cellulose spray is history. Roll on Brexit!!!
Lacquer will always eventually shrink and show the repair, period.
Dissolve not melt
I have used auto body painting techniques of my guitar....and the finish was better than what it came out with from the shop... Video maker man ...... that is not how you air spray lacquer...... get a wider nozzle and apply thin coats, 3-4-5-6 of them, after 2 coats it looks like ... crappy
Also...... what the fuck is that masking job??!?!?? the tape is applied horrible Looks like a lazy job to me.
You know...I think you could afford to let people post this in guitar groups on Facebook....what could it possibly hurt....? It's free advertisements....I had never even heard of Stew Mac until a couple years ago...so don't get such a big head...cut us some slack here...I just wanted to share this video with some guitar buddies....who might even buy something from you if they even knew you existed...think about it....It's almost like a Trump Supporter made these rules because they make absolutely no sense....
Jim CatManDude no need to get political
No need for you to worry what I do....
these show up in FB guitar groups all the time.
