When I visit my mother in Colorado, her neighbor across the street has a similar rig. The first time I saw it, I thought, "You are SUCH a hillbilly." But, the more I looked at it, the more I thought, "You are SUCH a genius." He parks his ATV under the sleeper and there's enough trailer behind the door to create a little deck just big enough for a couple of chairs and a hibachi. He has a case for skis and /or fishing piles over the fenders. It's pretty awesome, really.

Great idea! I have a Bigfoot truck camper, we love to use it for weekend camping. I thought about doing this modification too, but in the end decided not to as it would have cost more to have it on the trailer. Here we have to get the trailer licensed yearly $178.00, have it inspected yearly $45.25, then there’s the tires will need to be replaced every few years around $500 or more, extra fuel consumption due to weight and drag. Currently with it on my truck no need to put a license plant $0, no inspection $0, less fuel, no extra charges when crossing on ferries as it’s priced by length of rig, or road tolls as they charge by axel, also its easier to get camp site the shorter the rig. So looking at the what the pros and cons are, imo it’s not worth the effort or extra cost.

I’ve got a 1977 IdleTime truck camper I mounted on an old single axle boat trailer i built a deck on. It’s a little tongue heavy but it does the job.

I would leave the flatbed the way it is , add tie-down ratchet strap hooks on the side so you can haul cargo with you ,like suvaneers you may collect along your vacation, I would mount locking boxes over the fenders mounted to the diamond plaste sides , a place for the ratchet straps and tie-downs equipment , on other side I would of the trailer I would mount locking boxes as well , you can store other things in there like dry kindling and grill equipment for fire pits and such ,axes shovels , porta potty and place that is bear-proof for garbage or extra foof storage

If i remember correctly ..fender to fender was 6.5 ft wide, i had dually brackets which swung out 7’. And of course the back legs didn’t matter. The trailer was built just like an 8’ ram bed.

How high will the legs raise the truck bed camper. I have an idea I don't think anyone has come up with yet so I can only tell you it's extensive. If my idea plays well it will have a bunk room with full bathroom, a kitchen and a expanding living room. (Mobile puzzle box cabin) Comes to mind . When it's closed up the puzzle will be how do I get into it . When opened all the way it will house four to eight comfortably in climate controlled rooms with off grid technologies.

There are no laws that can tell you what you can put on a trailer. So, this is 100% legal!! I really like this idea. It is the perfect long trip traveling trailer with lots of space to store what you need!!!

  • @jimharvard

this is not a new idea - i have seen numerous videos of guys putting truck campers on trailers. yes, there are advantages of being able to unhook the trailer and drive the truck. however, this is pretty much exactly the same situation you have with a towed travel trailer. i can see putting a truck camper on a trailer as an "option" when you don't want to put it on your truck. but a "purpose built" travel trailer will always be superior to just putting a truck camper on a trailer. however, the main issue i want to address is where you mounted this camper on the trailer. there is a phenomena on equipment trailers where if you load equipment too far to the back, you get a "death sway" in the trailer. you ALWAYS have to mount any load at least 60% AHEAD of the "mid-point" of the axles. as such, i believe your camper is mounted too far rearward on this trailer. i would love to hear from drivers that haul equipment (skid steers, backhoes, excavators, etc.) on equipment trailers to offer their opinions on how this camper is mounted. i think it is too far back on this trailer to be safe.

The center of gravity on this build is spot on, if it appears to look off it maybe because the tongue is lifted for easy water off. The builder duplicated the bed as if it were on a Ram 8’ bed. Additionally it towed like a dream.
