    We are buying our dream farm this year!! I can’t wait to plan and plant a huge garden. We’ve been practicing with so many hardships and limitations and we’ve learned so much about successfully growing food in poor conditions, we are excited to finally get to practice our hard-earned skills in a more ideal environment. May God bless everyone’s 2022 gardens!

We moved here in September after here and gone since January. @@GrowVeg I don’t know enough about which plants require deep soil and which are fine in six inches of soil? That is to say, what the root systems of plants are like. Many videos of seed to harvest say nothing about “this plant has a tap root that grows deep or this plant has shallow roots so mulch(or don’t mulch).”

    Your kales and collard greens can be grown on “like” perennials. I live in the more central portion of New York State, very close to Lake Ontario, and this is the 3rd year that I’ve “over winter’d” both crops with NO coverage and have had amazing results. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

    My Garlic and Onions are growing great through the Straw on bed 1, and on bed 2 i'm about three quarters done with the Compost, Coir a bit of Hugelkultur at the bottom of the bed mixed in with Chicken Pellets, BFB and finished off with a couple of bags of Compost from the shop, then topped off with some more Straw then bed 2 is done.
    I have my Spuds on the way this month sometime so my 30L pots are all washed and sorted, all that's left to do is make some more homemade wooden Planters and then a bit of Seed Sowing.

    Having gardened on my 1/2 acre lot for 40 years, I finally realized that the sunniest spot is the driveway and the septic field. (we have many trees) So, I decided to install raised beds alongside the driveway and this has produced spectacular results. For the upcoming growing season, I have installed a huge 6'x16' raised bed where I plan to grow peppers, tomatoes, and possibly squash. Your videos are very inspiring, keep posting!

    I'm onto my third year of using your garden planner, it's been very helpful. Being able to move things around easily, work out how much I can fit in each space and the ability to add in dates of when things are planted out then harvested is really helping me make the most of a small growing space. It makes it a lot easier to know when to sow seeds for the follow on crops, something I've always messed up in the past. Well worth the money, thank you :)

This will be my third year using the planner and this year I have been using it to redesign the layout of my garden. New planter beds, new compost and leaf mold bins and new fence to support my effort to grow espalier fruit trees. I used the planner to gauge the size and location of planters (pallet collars) as well as using the planner to help avoid putting plants into the same space as before. Next up putting together my starter plant work area and reviewing which plants can be started with seeds and which are better with seedlings. I always try something new each year in my garden and the Jerusalum artichokes look like a possibility for this year.

    We also got our first fruit from our fruit trees, from the food forest we planted 2020, kids loved that. Brambles are roaring and our apples swelling lol.
    Even got to try two foods I have been dying to try, gooseberries, which are not very common here and the entire family likes them and Juneberries, which while common in the US, took me nearly 2 years to find a tree here in Australia lol.

    Thanks for the video, Ben! My goal for this year is to grow more staples and fewer 'fun' crops, so that I can more fully feed my family. Last year my overly ambitious goal was to feed the neighborhood, and I soon realized that I need a lot more space to do that! I live in town with a small yard, so I have purchased two GreenStalk vertical planters to give me more space, but will also focus more on basic crops.
    I love your Garden Planner app!

    I am interested that the main thing about a raised bed is drainage. My soil drains very easily. I am growing on an ex gravel pit. So if the soil is 6 inches higher with a raised bed, that means the plant is six inches further from water. I have had more success growing in a hole, for example celery. Then there is tripping over the edge of the raised bed, so in the end I got rid of them.
    My big plan this year is to start a youtube channel. I am been growing vegetables for nearly 50 years I think I might be able to have a few handy hints.

I am learning that it may be rather expensive to start but over time end up being cheaper than going to the store. I do not have a very large yard and I live in Texas. Do you have a list of fruits and veggies that grow nicely in my current climate region? I would prefer as many perennials as possible. Your videos are amazing. Thank you for making this page

      I don't have a specific list for your climate, but I would concentrate on warmth-loving crops such as tomatoes, egg plant, corn and squash. What do you think about raised beds with weed surpressant liner? I have an allotment which has been pretty much entirely covered in this weaved plastic stuff. From getting this garden, I found what they planted was poor to nothing.
    I have seen a major fashion in no dig, but reckon no dig with a plastic base and nothing other than bought compost is pretty bad. I felt pretty shell shocked after being a gardener, then leaving because life got in the way, and then getting back to this?
    I'm ripping the whole lot up now, I'm getting every organic material I can get my hands on to rejuvenate the suffocated soil, I find vegetable waste with lots of manure, and I'm also lucky enough to get seaweed with the grains of sand they hold to add minerals. Back in the day..(ffs am only 62) I was an avid fan of GardenersWorld, and have a very old book by Fred Loads on how to care for plants.. Fascinating stuff.. Pretty sure you've read it, if for nothing else than you know your stuff.
    Well anyway, these oldies would promote the compost heap, raking up the leaves, getting in the horse and cow poo and pretty much putting it all in (providing it wasn't cooked or meat or dairy, as that could attract vermin that will knaw on your best veg).. Lots of times both in book and on programme would say 'it's backbreaking work, but it's worth it' and OMG it truly is!
    Am not a no dig type of guy, my plan is to liberate this whole allotment of all of the weed surpressant and manufactured gunk. I am going to let my soil breathe! I am going to.. What???? Yes what??? Yep dig the soil, let all of the worms and slate back beetles and all the rest of them reclaim their place!
    Well many moons ago, I used to grow veg that was pretty much pest free, a few ways I did this, was :set my seeds, next stage, put some well rotted compost at the bottom of their transplant, and when the shit hit the fan.. In a literal sense, then boy did they jump!
    One of my most important things after that, was plant them where they will be happy, no good putting a sunflower in full shade.. You will get something, but most likely not what you expected. Because my plants were strong and happy from the get go, this helped with pest resistance anyway my veg always had strong and sturdy base at the outset.
    The other thing I did, was plant stuff when the creepy crawlies had pretty much had it. The taste of cauliflower is truly divine, but if you plant winter Cauli, that heads in March, and overwinter, then no need for nets or sprays and that as the creepies aren't there.. You get them before they do.
    As for saving time for your busy work schedule.. All good for those who need it, but reckon there is a much better life.. And in my opinion, no better life, than having the autonomy, of starting your day, when you wake up.. Rather than an alarm. Of listening to the birdsong of being able to take a break.. When you need, rather than suffering mental and also pyshical pain of working beyond when yer body had done enough.. Backbreaking work.. Maybes unavoidable, but to taste the best veg, to feel the seasons, the cold and the heat... Posh car or posh Veg.. Which lives longer. My food for thought
    Also please can we have which veg tolerate shade best.. I Am so pleased you mentioned this, especially with me wanting the best for my plants by putting them where they will thrive best

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  Рік тому

      Definitely a posh veg guy! I agree that if you can avoid having loads of plastic etc on your soil, then that is preferable - better to let the soil breathe for sure! Here's a link to a video on the best veg for shade: ua-cam.com/video/9xxaGk31r2I/v-deo.html

    Hi, a very elementary issue help needed please. I agree with you that companion planting is a great idea but how do I plant nasturtiums, marigolds etc in a green house. I tend to use growbags for tomatoes so last year I planted marigolds in several 3" pots and put them on the top narrow shelf. The roots grew prolifically and the plants stopped flowering quite quickly. They seemed to take up a lot of water and almost needed the same attention as the tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and basil!
    I love your videos - they motivate me to get going. Thankyou
    😀

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Debbie. I would plant marigolds in larger pots, placed in and among your growbags. I suspect the 3" pots were just a bit too small for them. Ideally pots around 6" in diameter would be preferable, to sustain them all season.
