    Welcome to Vanguard world! The noise floor on the new V44s is also insanely low, it's great for quiet stuff too.

      Hey I watch you both !!! Great stuff. Audioscape is in partnership with them and I see the mics on emails. Always so curious. Thank you both for all your work.

    I'm surprised you didn't end up with a bunch of comb filtering on the vocals. Sounded awesome!

    Vance Powell has often recorded vocals with two mics. One 47 clone and a Coles 4038 side by side. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's not processing the heck out of one of those, probably the Coles.

      oh heck yeah. And i do that alot with 2 mics. It was interesting to do it with matched capsules i got to see the differences in preamps in real time. That use case something i hadn't considered until that moment.

    You should do a drum video with a fully mic'd kit but adding that in for crotch, room, and other positions. Or maybe as an overhead in XY etc. Sounded great btw, even on this shitty work laptop.

    That drum sound is SO GOOD. Super interesting that it's sort of a…Blumlein crotch mic? But given that low freqs are more omnidirectional than high freqs, its possible the "nulled" bottom capsule to the kick was still picking up enough of that kick oomph. It still is a super weird technique I've never seen, I feel like maybe you've invented a cool new thing.

      Stereo mics are super niche, but IMO underappreciated. (and yeah, we make 2 models of stereo mics, so I'm biased here!)

    Amazing video! What is your opinion about stereo ribbons vs stereo condensers?

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  6 місяців тому +1

      I’m a sucker for a ribbon… But they’re very different right? While ribbons have that super fast, intimate, transient thing going on, they can be dark and not as close to the source. I think this translates to that “modern” sound. In this context, I love being able to move one of the elements to different angles, which I can’t do with the R88. That is one of my favorites for drums acoustic instruments. Anything where I want a ton of vibe. I wouldn’t really use these two interchangeably very different tools.

    • @andrewlukinsmusic
      @andrewlukinsmusic 6 місяців тому

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Thanks for your quick reply! I do love the sound of a ribbon, but it terms of versatility this one certainly seems like a swiss army knife

    • @andrewlukinsmusic
      @andrewlukinsmusic 6 місяців тому

      The only other mic that is similar to this I can think of is the Avantone CK-40

    • @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779
      @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779 6 місяців тому

      @@andrewlukinsmusicinterestingly Ken Avant (my business partner) also conceived the CK-40. But even he concedes the metalwork is ridiculously annoying. The top capsule is held on with 2 tiny pieces of 1mm wire that use tension to keep it "together". We had a BOX of those wires as spares because once one came out, it never went in right again. It also uses K67 style capsules which yields a brighter sound.

    • @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779
      @derek-vanguardaudiolabs9779 6 місяців тому

      (one other thing to add to Jeremy's reply - a condenser stereo mic usually is multipattern whereas a ribbon will, to my knowledge, always be Blumlein. So you get more versatility with a condenser, although the tone will be markedly different).

      On vanguards page you can hear the raw if you want.
      There’s a gnarly spring reverb on the drums in my mix. That has a fair modulation to it.
